As reported by Deadline, Netflix is in talks to purchase Joe Wright’s “The Woman in the Window” from 20th Century Studios. The film is the last project from Fox 2000, and its fate was left unclear when Disney acquired Fox in the spring of 2019.
“The Woman in the Window” was originally supposed to premiere on May 15th, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now looking to be released on streaming services. Due to its mature content as a crime thriller, it is not necessarily appropriate for Disney+, which may be why the film is being sold to Netflix.
The film is adapted from the 2018 novel of the same name by A.J. Finn, and is about an agoraphobic woman (Amy Adams) who witnesses crime between a family next door. The screenplay was written by Tracy Letts (“August: Osage County”) and was produced by Eli Bush and Scott Rudin. Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, and Julianne Moore also star alongside Adams.
If “The Woman in the Window” does make the transition to Netflix, it will be interesting to see if the streaming service makes an awards push for the film. The film’s director, screenwriter, and cast have all been recognized by the Academy, and it could lead to Amy Adams’ first Academy Award after being nominated six times in the past. However, deciding to forgo a move to their own streaming service with Hulu, it’s looking like Disney wants to cut their losses and just be rid of the film all-together.
