The Next Best Series Podcast: Interview With “Black Bird” Executive Producer & Writer, Dennis Lehane

By Matt Neglia

“Black Bird” is a true-crime miniseries on AppleTV+, with two episodes coming out July 8th and the rest debuting on the streaming platform weekly). It stars Taron Egerton as Jimmy Keene, a young convict who is transferred to a maximum-security prison so he can get close to Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to determine if he’s the one behind a series of murders. With his ten-year prison sentence on the line, the closer Jimmy gets to Paul, doubts about the man’s innocence not only comes into play but Jimmy’s safety as well. The series is adapted from the true-crime memoir “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption” by James Keene and Hillel Levin and also stars Greg Kinnear, Sepideh Moafi, and Ray Liotta in his final on-screen role as Jimmy Keene’s father, Big Jim Keene. Executive producer and writer Dennis Lehane was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about his work on the show, what drew him to the story, and working with the actors.
