The Next Best Picture Podcast – “The Matrix”

By Matt Neglia

It cannot be overstated just how groundbreaking Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s 1999 sci-fi action masterpiece “The Matrix” was at the time of its release and how influential it has been in the years since. Its popularity has spurred multiple sequels (including a new one next week), spin-offs, and imitators across the film industry who tried to replicate the lightning in a bottle the sisters caught. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano in iconic roles, the film either turned them into household names or cemented their reputations. Twenty-two years later, we decided to go back to the Matrix and discuss the first film’s themes, action scenes, characters, visual effects (including the legendary use of “bullet-time”), its awards run, and more! Joining me for this throwback podcast review, I have Josh ParhamLauren LaMagna & Dan Bayer. Take that red pill, plug yourself back in and enjoy!
