By Matt Neglia

One of the most important guilds of the year, the Producers Guild Of America (PGA) have announced their nominations for the 10 best films of 2018. The winners will be announced January 19th 2019.

As far as nominations overlap with the Academy Awards for Best Picture goes, the PGA Awards are a crucial component to possibly understanding what will win the Best Picture Oscar as 7 of the last 9 years of winners have gone on to win the Academy’s big prize.

The Hurt Locker
The King’s Speech
The Artist
Argo
12 Years A Slave & Gravity (TIE)
Birdman
The Big Short (Spotlight won Best Picture)
La La Land (Moonlight won Best Picture)
The Shape Of Water

Which film will triumph this year? The answer lies within these nominees. As far as nomination overlap goes with the Oscars, this is how often the PGA Awards have lined up with the Academy’s choices for Best Picture.

2017: 7/9
2016: 9/9
2015: 7/8
2014: 7/8
2013: 8/9
2012: 8/9
2011: 7/9
2010: 9/10
2009: 8/10

And here are the films that have so far received major citations for Best Picture throughout the season so far. The only films to land at all of these so far are Black Panther and A Star Is Born. Right behind them landing at 5/6 is BlacKkKlansman and from there it is a random combination of sorts for all. But so far here are where things rank for each film….

Black Panther – AFI, CC, GG, NBR, PGA, SAG
A Star Is Born – AFI, CC, GG, NBR, PGA, SAG
BlacKkKlansman – AFI, CC, GG, PGA, SAG
Green Book – AFI, CC, GG, NBR, PGA
Mary Poppins Returns – AFI, CC, GG, NBR
The Favourite – AFI, CC, GG, PGA
If Beale Street Could Talk – AFI, CC, GG, NBR
Bohemian Rhapsody – GG, PGA, SAG
Crazy Rich Asians – GG, PGA, SAG
A Quiet Place – AFI, NBR, PGA
Roma – CC, NBR, PGA
Vice – CC, GG, PGA
Eighth Grade – AFI, NBR
First Reformed – AFI, NBR
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – NBR
Can You Ever Forgive Me? – NBR
First Man – CC

It’s also important to note that Roma has won the most Best Picture prizes this season (17) including the coveted Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. The Favourite trails behind in second place with 6 wins. All of this can be seen in the blog sidebar where we keep our tallies on the precursors.

The big takeaways from all of this for me are…

  • Vice” now has a big leg to stand on after getting Best Picture mentions from Critics Choice, Golden Globes and now Producers Guild while “Mary Poppins Returns” failing to get a nod here is a very big deal for a film that by all accounts, should have made it here.
  • After showing weakness at both Critics Choice, Golden Globes (missing Director nominations from each), SAG (Not a single nomination) and now missing the PGA, “If Beale Street Could Talk” getting into Best Picture feels like a dream now. However, we have seen AMPAS resurrect indie darlings before such as “Room,” “Winter’s Bone” and “Phantom Thread.” Perhaps “If Beale Street Could Talk” is that film this year.
  • Who needs a Best Popular Oscar when you have “Black Panther” (Still one of the only films to land everywhere), “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “A Quiet Place” and “A Star Is Born” (The other film to get Best Picture notices everywhere) all getting Best Picture notices?

So what are you predicting for Best Picture at this point? Remember we still have the DGA Nominations on January 8th and the BAFTA Nominations, the day after on January 9th to help us finally (and hopefully) sort all of this out. Our predictions for the Oscar for Best Picture can be found here. Let us know in the comments section below or on our Twitter account.
