Well, that was a one-of-a-kind Emmys. As one would expect during the pandemic, the 2020 Creative Arts Emmys were awarded virtually this year, with host Nicole Byer, an Emmy nominee herself for hosting the reality show "Nailed It!," introducing presenters from outside the Television Academy building in North Hollywood, CA. What was very different this year was that the ceremony was stretched over five nights, with a different genre being spotlighted each evening -- Reality & Non-Fiction series on Monday, Variety shows on Tuesday, Scripted broadcasts on Wednesday and Thursday, and everything else on Saturday. Presenters appeared either from the Academy sidewalk or from their own homes to announce the nominees. A slide would then appear to announce the winner, followed by a pre-taped acceptance speech from the lucky recipient(s). With the exception of when a wrong winner was called on Saturday, the whole thing worked smoothly and economically, without the time-consuming opening monologue or those endless walks to the stage by winners. Each night was wham-bam, and before you knew it, dozens of Emmys had been given out in what seemed like no time at all. To no one's surprise, the big winners on the tech-side were the favorite for limited series, HBO's "Watchmen," and the surprise "Star Wars" entry from Disney+, "The Mandalorian," which each won seven Emmys this week, with potentially more to come on Sunday. Still, two of the week's most interesting stories came from two veteran series: "Saturday Night Live," about to begin its 46th season, won six more awards, bringing its career Emmy wins to 83, including Eddie Murphy's first (!) Emmy ever and Maya Rudolph's second Emmy this week, this time for playing Kamala Harris. And "RuPaul's Drag Race," which just finished its 12th year, won five more Creative Arts Emmys this week, including a record-breaking fifth consecutive victory as Outstanding Reality Competition Host for RuPaul Charles, passing the long-time record held by Jeff Probst of "Survivor." Murphy and Rudolph were two of the four winners for Guest Acting and were joined on the drama side by Ron Cephas Jones, who took his second Emmy for "This Is Us," as well as "Succession's" Cherry Jones, who earned her third career Emmy. If you're wondering what happened to the Drama and Comedy Series favorites, HBO's "Succession" and Pop TV's "Schitt's Creek," in their low number of Creative Arts wins, most of their nominations have come from tonight's glamorous above-the-line categories. But each show won the predictive Casting award this week, so I suspect both series will do just fine at winning the big prizes, which will be handed out during the Primetime Emmy Awards tonight, starting at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT on ABC. Till then, we'll just have to wait. Check out our predictions for tonight's Primetime Emmy Awards here and keep scrolling to see the full list of winners from this week's 72nd Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
