By Josh Tarpley After the massive success that is “Get Out,” writer, director & producer extraordinaire Jordan Peele has set up his next feature film for release in 2019. The movie will be released through Universal Pictures and be a production under his new company, Monkey Paw. Though the 2019 release date may feel far away, Peele will be busy with various other project between now and then. Click beyond the jump to read more about Peele’s upcoming creative slate In previous months there were reports and discussions around the idea of Peele directing an American adaptation of “Akira.” Though a surprise at first, many came around to the idea, seeing it as the comedy icon jumping from small passion project up to blockbuster territory like many before him (Think Gareth Edwards’ “Monsters” to “Godzilla” and Rian Johnson’s “Looper” to “Star Wars” transitions”). Instead of making the jump, it appears as though Peele wants to stay in the smaller market for the time being.
With no title and plot details being kept under wraps, all we know is that Peele’s “Get Out” follow up will be another socially charged thriller based on an original idea (per Variety). Following the footsteps of “Get Out’s” Spring release, the new thriller will hit theaters on March 15, 2019. There is some stiff blockbuster competition in March ‘19 (“Captain Marvel,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”), but the smaller film should succeed in being counter programming to the giant thrills. Peele’s attention in 2018 will be on developing “Lovecraft Country” with J.J. Abrams as an HBO anthology series. Read this synopsis (per Variety) of the book and tell me this isn’t the perfect fit for the “Get Out” director: “The anthology horror series follows 25-year-old Atticus Black, who joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find his missing father. They must survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.” That sounds like a perfect follow up to the social commentary and thrills delivered in “Get Out.” Though we all fell in love with “Key and Peele” for its comedic chops, Peele has immediately broken through as one of the most sought out directors in the horror/thriller world. “Lovecraft Country” is expected to hit HBO in 2018, we can expect to hear more details about both projects in the coming months. What do you all think? Are you excited that Jordan Peele is developing these socially relevant thrillers? Let us know in the comments section before.
