The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are over. With just three weeks to go until the Academy Awards, these awards gave some much-needed clarity to the Oscars race. A couple of actors continued their winning streaks, two actresses gained ground, and Ensemble brought a challenge to the Best Picture race. Let’s dive in to see how the SAG Awards could impact the Oscars.

Last night, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) held their 27th annual awards ceremony where they rewarded the best acting in film and television for 2020. There were some expected wins, some close calls and some genuine shockers. There is a lot to talk about here (especially when it comes to Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress) so let's dive in! Joining me for this instant reactions podcast are Amanda Spears, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer. Tune in below to listen and enjoy! This is a preview of the podcast. The 27th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards will be held this Sunday, April 4th in a one hour pre-taped special where the winners will know who has won before the rest of the world does. Because of this, we're not having a "Predict The SAG Award Winners" Contest due to the fact that the winners might leak before Sunday. However, that will not stop us from posting our own predictions for both the film and television categories. One of the most important stops on the road to the Oscars and the Emmys, take a look at our predictions down below.
By Amanda Spears
If you work in film or television as an actor, the SAG Awards matter. Your peers' recognition can foretell whether or not you may go on to win the bigger and more illustrious prizes, the Oscars and Emmys. Keep in mind that the Screen Actors Guild includes not only film and television performers in their voting body but AFTRA as well, which gives news anchors, voice-over artists, and meteorologists the chance to vote. While my fellow awards pundits and prognosticators may feel after the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards have announced their winners that a performer is 100% a lock to win an Oscar, I have adopted a "wait and see" mentality until their peers have also chimed in. Momentum can easily be lost or gained if your peers snub or award you. With that said, here are my 2021 SAG Award Winner Predictions...
By Daniel Howat
After yesterday's Golden Globe nominations, today's SAG Award nominations are here to truly help us get a sense of where this season is headed. There were absolutely some surprises, some snubs, and at least one baffling moment. Let's break it all down and see how it could affect the Oscar race!

After today's Golden Globe nominations, the fun is not stopping there! Tomorrow, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) will announce their nominations representing the best in acting for 2020. An important precursor for the Oscars, we are eagerly anticipating who will make the cut this year. Some members of the Next Best Picture team already provided their predictions on the podcast (which you can listen to here) but now more members are chiming in with their predictions. Click below to see our predictions.

While receiving a Golden Globe or Critics Choice nomination is nice, a Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination is critical if you're going to receive an Oscar nomination or eventually win. The acting branch is the largest branch of the Academy and only "Braveheart" (1995) was completely overlooked by SAG and still able to win the Oscar Best Picture, up until the back to back years of "The Shape Of Water" in 2017 and "Green Book" in 2018. Last year's Best Film Ensemble winner "Parasite" went on to win Best Picture and all four individual acting winners followed up their SAG victories with an Oscar win. So where does that leave us for this year? Click below to see my predictions for this year's SAG Award Nominations.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were handed out last night and while much didn't change in the four acting acting races, the Best Picture race received quite a shakeup when "Parasite" won for Best Ensemble. Michael Schwartz, Amanda Spears, Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, Tom O'Brien & I hopped on the podcast minutes after the show ended to record our initial thoughts on the winners, the show, the speeches and where we think the Oscar race is heading. Tune in to listen to our immediate reactions. This is a preview of the podcast. The full version is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. The SAG Awards! Actors voting for actors! A night that could change the course of the Oscar race! Just not this year! Last night’s SAG Award winners (despite an exciting Best Ensemble winner...more on that later) should not have been surprising to anyone with a passing familiarity with this awards season. Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern continued their televised-award dominance with yet another set of wins tonight, and their path to the Oscar appears all-but-guaranteed.

One of awards season’s most important precursors, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, just revealed their nominations and provided yet another insight into the industry’s take on the year in film. They’re one of a few guilds that have started announcing, but being representative of actors’ votes carries a lot of weight. Let’s now take a look at some of their choices and what the nominations reveal about what’s in store for the rest of the season.

The trend of rewarding popular names and widely seen, profitable films this award season continued at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night. The 25th annual ceremony leaned into conventional wisdom yet brought a few surprises to keep the race mostly interesting in a few major categories. So often, SAG is regarded as the paramount predictive pillar during award season, because it has crossover with the largest branch in the Academy, the actors. Back in the old days, if one did not receive a SAG nomination, their chances at winning the Oscar were over. Conversely, too, if an actor wins at SAG, they became exponentially more likely to win the Oscar. SAG is supposed to clue us in on what’s really going on with voters.

We knew it would be shocking. We knew it would be heartbreaking. But I still don't think many of us predicted what would happen this morning. With this morning's nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, we are truly deep into awards season now (Some might even say, we're far from the shallow now). And if you like your season with twists and turns, SAG definitely delivered. Let's explore what these nominations tell us about the state of the Oscar race.

We have heard from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and now tomorrow, we will hear from the Screen Actor's Guild. One of the best predictors for the acting categories at the Oscars, the over 100,000 large membership can bring about an unexpected surprise (last year's Denzel Washington for "Roman J. Israel, Esq.") or solidify a fringe contender (Woody Harrelson last year for "Three Billboards Outside Edding, Missouri"). What surprises will they throw us this year? Who will be left out? Click below to see our predictions.

The 24th annual SAG Awards are being held this Sunday and we are holding a contest to see who can get the most predictions correct. The tie-breaker shall be to correctly guess the Producer's Guild Award Winner (Which will be held Saturday) so all submissions are due before Saturday January 20th. Click below to see the team over at Next Best Picture's predictions and enter in your own. Good luck!

It’s been a busy week if you’re following the Oscar race. In addition to the onslaught of critics awards over the past two weeks, Monday brought us the Golden Globe nominations, and Wednesday gave us the Screen Actors Guild nominations. Though the Globes may have a higher profile, the SAG has much more overlap with the Academy Award voters. While these nominations seem to have solidified a few things, we’ve still got a few questions. Let’s take a deep dive into each category and see how they’ve affected the race.

The nominations for the two award shows with the most notoriety prior to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, will be announced on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. These two award shows hold creditability and stature that benefit films and artists in different ways. The Golden Globes are the second most publicized event of the year after the Academy Awards, and they hold a greater level of importance than they used to. This is mostly due to the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press often has their fingers on the pulse of the progressive and modern cultural moment. However, the Golden Globes do not have any direct correlation to or impact on the Oscars, rather, they simply allow filmmakers and actors chances to gain momentum through speeches, appearances, and word-of-mouth acclaim. SAG, on the other hand, is made up of voters who actually vote in the Oscars, which can serve as indicative evidence in predicting which actors will be nominated for the Academy Awards and who will win. |
