The SAG Awards! Actors voting for actors! A night that could change the course of the Oscar race! Just not this year! Last night’s SAG Award winners (despite an exciting Best Ensemble winner...more on that later) should not have been surprising to anyone with a passing familiarity with this awards season. Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern continued their televised-award dominance with yet another set of wins tonight, and their path to the Oscar appears all-but-guaranteed.

One of awards season’s most important precursors, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, just revealed their nominations and provided yet another insight into the industry’s take on the year in film. They’re one of a few guilds that have started announcing, but being representative of actors’ votes carries a lot of weight. Let’s now take a look at some of their choices and what the nominations reveal about what’s in store for the rest of the season.

The trend of rewarding popular names and widely seen, profitable films this award season continued at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night. The 25th annual ceremony leaned into conventional wisdom yet brought a few surprises to keep the race mostly interesting in a few major categories. So often, SAG is regarded as the paramount predictive pillar during award season, because it has crossover with the largest branch in the Academy, the actors. Back in the old days, if one did not receive a SAG nomination, their chances at winning the Oscar were over. Conversely, too, if an actor wins at SAG, they became exponentially more likely to win the Oscar. SAG is supposed to clue us in on what’s really going on with voters.

We knew it would be shocking. We knew it would be heartbreaking. But I still don't think many of us predicted what would happen this morning. With this morning's nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, we are truly deep into awards season now (Some might even say, we're far from the shallow now). And if you like your season with twists and turns, SAG definitely delivered. Let's explore what these nominations tell us about the state of the Oscar race.

We have heard from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and now tomorrow, we will hear from the Screen Actor's Guild. One of the best predictors for the acting categories at the Oscars, the over 100,000 large membership can bring about an unexpected surprise (last year's Denzel Washington for "Roman J. Israel, Esq.") or solidify a fringe contender (Woody Harrelson last year for "Three Billboards Outside Edding, Missouri"). What surprises will they throw us this year? Who will be left out? Click below to see our predictions.

It’s been a busy week if you’re following the Oscar race. In addition to the onslaught of critics awards over the past two weeks, Monday brought us the Golden Globe nominations, and Wednesday gave us the Screen Actors Guild nominations. Though the Globes may have a higher profile, the SAG has much more overlap with the Academy Award voters. While these nominations seem to have solidified a few things, we’ve still got a few questions. Let’s take a deep dive into each category and see how they’ve affected the race.

The nominations for the two award shows with the most notoriety prior to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, will be announced on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. These two award shows hold creditability and stature that benefit films and artists in different ways. The Golden Globes are the second most publicized event of the year after the Academy Awards, and they hold a greater level of importance than they used to. This is mostly due to the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press often has their fingers on the pulse of the progressive and modern cultural moment. However, the Golden Globes do not have any direct correlation to or impact on the Oscars, rather, they simply allow filmmakers and actors chances to gain momentum through speeches, appearances, and word-of-mouth acclaim. SAG, on the other hand, is made up of voters who actually vote in the Oscars, which can serve as indicative evidence in predicting which actors will be nominated for the Academy Awards and who will win.
