"On The Count Of Three" had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where a lot of people were wondering who would be daring enough to pick up the film, which dealt with a highly sensitive subject matter, blending dark comedy with the heartwarming drama between two best friends who make a pact to kill themselves on the same day. Screenwriters Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch had a difficult tight rope to walk when communicating the themes of their story and the humanity of their characters without rubbing audiences the wrong way. The overall positive critical reception to the film suggests they struck the balance just right. The two were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about their work on the film, which is now playing in select theaters and available on digital from Annapurna & Orion Pictures. "Pleasure" premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and within the opening moments, everyone who was watching it knew it was going to be a tough sell. An uncompromising look at the porn industry with many graphic sex scenes, it is a testament to writer and director Ninja Thyberg that the movie works as well as it does. With no judgment being placed on its protagonist (played brilliantly and fearlessly by Sofia Kappel), the film is a psychological character study that showcases both the good and ugly side of a business many have pre-conceived ill notions of. Tune in below to listen to my conversation with Ninja on her daring film, which is finally being released this weekend from NEON. Thank you, and enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. "Pachinko" premiered on Apple TV+ on March 25th and has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed series of 2022, resulting in a renewal for a second season which will come in 2023. The series is based on a novel of the same name by author and journalist Min Jin Lee. Soo Hugh created the series, with all episodes directed either by Kogonada ("After Yang") or Justin Chon ("Blue Bayou"). It tells the generational story of a Korean family who immigrates to Japan from various perspectives in different timelines and languages. Sound Editor/Re-Recording Mixer Luciano Vignola & Re-Recording Mixer Martin Czembor were kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the first season with us which you can listen to down below. For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Nicole Ackman, Lauren LaMagna & Amy Smith. Today, we're discussing the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), "Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness," starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg & Rachel McAdams. Director Sam Raimi returns to Marvel after helming the original "Spider-Man" trilogy, and he brings his distinct filmmaking style and love of the horror genre to inject new life into the world's biggest franchise. Is it enough to overcome the well-established style that Kevin Feige has had in place for over a decade? What did we think of the story, the writing, the performances, and the visual effects? We discuss all of these points and more in our review below. For those who want to hear us discuss spoilers, we save that for its own section at the end. Thank you, and enjoy! Gaspar Noé is one of cinema's most intense filmmakers, crafting a filmography that pummels you into submission through powerful imagery, sensory overload, and unflinching violence which twists your guts inside and out. "Hatching" had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival as a part of its Midnight Section and is now being released by IFC Midnight this weekend in limited release. The coming-of-age horror film boasts some incredibly gruesome practical creature effects, which harkens back to horror films of the 70s and 80s with an outstanding dual performance from the film's breakout star, Siiri Solalinna. Director Hannah Bergholm was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film's story, Siiri's performance, the film's special effects, and more. Our 2012 retrospective continues with one of the biggest films from that year. Sam Mendes' "Skyfall" was a game-changer for the James Bond franchise critically, financially, and awards-wise. Heralded for its cinematography, focus on character, score, and iconic James Bond theme by multi-award-winning artist Adele, the film is often regarded as one of the finest James Bond films and one of the finest films of 2012. What do we think of it ten years later? Do the action scenes hold up for us? What about the story? How do we feel about the performances by Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Judi Dench? We discuss all of this plus the film's awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review down below. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review I have Sara Clements, Josh Parham, Zoe Rose Bryant & Patreon guest Ben Sears. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you! "Navalny" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the overall Festival Favorite Award. One couldn't have guessed how a month later, the film would prove to be more timely than ever when Russia waged war on Ukraine. The documentary tells the story of the rise of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the plot to assassinate him by the Kremlin. Though Navalny is currently behind bars, the documentary has resonated with all those who have seen it. Director Daniel Roher was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the impact his film is having on audiences, if he fears for his own safety after making the documentary, what went into capturing that shocking phone call between Navalny and his assassins. We discuss all of this and more in our podcast, which you can listen to down below. The film had its premiere this past Sunday on CNN & will be available on HBO Max starting May 26th. Enjoy! The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "The Northman" Director/Co-Writer, Robert Eggers4/25/2022
By Matt Neglia
"The Northman" is the third feature film from director Robert Eggers ("The Witch" &"The Lighthouse"), and like his two previous films, it's an unforgettably immersive experience due to the meticulous amounts of research that went into the project with a gripping revenge story steeped in themes we're familiar with. Eggers set out to make the definitive Viking film, and he's done just that with his latest. The director was kind enough to speak with me for a few minutes about what it was like working with a higher budget than his last two films, what the most fun day on set was, his collaboration with Alexander Skarsgård, what he has planned next and more. "The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent," which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate, is not only a showcase role for Nicolas Cage but also a tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor. Anyone who is a fan will be won over by the film's humor, action, and fearlessness with how much Nicolas Cage throws himself into playing an exaggerated version of himself alongside a hilarious Pedro Pascal. The duo's fantastic chemistry might win over even critics and skeptics. Director/Writer Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about their newest film, how they managed to convince Nicolas Cage to come on board, what it was like working with Pedro Pascal, which movies would they program for a Nicolas Cage Film Festival and more! "Charlotte" had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and is now receiving a limited release starting this weekend in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada before slowly rolling out to other markets. The film tells the true story of artist Charlotte Salomon, a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin who hid from the Nazis during World War II before being tragically murdered at Auschwitz in 1943. Years later, her paintings gained international recognition, and now her story is being told in animation form by directors Eric Warin and Tahir Rana. Academy Award-nominee Keira Knightley ("The Imitation Game") provides the vocal performance for Charlotte, infusing her with grace, intelligence and warmth. For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham, Tom O'Brien & guest Amanda Guaraggi. Today, we're discussing the newest film in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise titled, "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore," starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, and a bunch of others. This franchise has gotten off to a rocky start and hasn't been helped by the actions of many involved, both behind and in front of the camera, in their personal lives. Was this an improvement on the last film? Does it come close to recapturing the magic of the original "Harry Potter" films? What did we think of the acting, crafts, writing, and do we believe the franchise will be able to close out with the planned fourth and fifth installments? As promised at the conclusion of the 2021 awards season, we have our first of ten NBP Podcast reviews for our 2012 retrospective, which will be running from now until the end of the summer. That first film is Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar-winning film "The Hurt Locker," titled "Zero Dark Thirty," which saw her re-team with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Mark Boal. With a large ensemble cast led by Jessica Chastain, Bigelow's film ignited a ton of controversy upon its release, making for one of the most spectacular rises and falls in awards season history. What do we think of the film ten years later? We discuss the direction, writing, editing, Chastain's performance, and more in our review. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review, I have Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, and guests Nadia Dalimonte and Charles Bright. The 27th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up in New York a few weeks ago, and as always, the Film at Lincoln Center did a fantastic job with their programming, talks, and events. The acclaimed festival highlights the best of what contemporary French filmmaking has to offer, with many great artists from across the sea attending in-person, including Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Mathieu Almaric, Emmanuel Carrère, Emilie Carpentier, Vincent Maël Cardona, and Leyla Bouzid. One of the great auteur filmmakers of our time is Jacques Audiard, who brought his film "Prais, 13th District" to the festival after its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film is a fascinating exploration of casual sex and relationships set in modern-day Paris, seen through the eyes of complex adults starring Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Jehnny Beth & Noémie Merlant. Audiard and Zhang were kind enough to talk with me about the film, their work together, and what they plan to do next. Please take a listen to my conversation with them below and be sure to check out the film which is opening in limited release this week from IFC Films. Thank you. Thank you so much for listening.
