The Next Best Picture Podcast: Episode 131 - Our Full Detailed Reaction To The 91st Academy Awards2/26/2019
By Matt Neglia
As promised after last night's instant reactions to the 91st Academy Awards, we are back to deliver our full detailed thoughts on the evening that gave us wins for "Black Panther," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Green Book" & more! Will Mavity, Michael Schwartz, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & myself dish out all of the details on Hollywood's biggest night. We also receive help from InSession Film's Ryan McQuade. We were supposed to announce our own awards for 2018, the NBP Film Awards at the end of the episode, followed by an announcement pertaining to the off season. However, this episode turned out to be the longest in NBP history and we have decided to push those two bits to next week's episode. For now, Awards Season is over and all that's left are the questions and the discussion. Give us a listen to hear it all. Thank you so much for listening. You can subscribe to the Next Best Picture Podcast on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, GooglePlay, Tunein, PlayerFM, Acast & Castbox or you can listen down below. The last few weeks leading up to the 91st Academy Awards ceremony were full of sturm und drang. Seemingly every announcement made about the telecast was walked back within a matter of days, from Kevin Hart hosting to presenting certain awards during the commercial breaks. All the decisions were announced by the AMPAS Board of Governors with one goal in mind: Getting a larger audience for Disney-owned ABC, which broadcasts the ceremony. Now that the ceremony has finally aired, how did producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss do?

Well folks, the 91st Academy Awards are officially behind us. Hearts were broke and moments of joy were shared by millions all over the world. Stats were also broken and we didn't have a host to guide us through the evening's many ups and downs but it turns out we didn't really need one. For this special quick recording, Michael Schwartz, Jacey Aldredge, Josh Parham, Cody Dericks and myself give you our instant reactions to the 2019 Academy Awards moments after they went off the air. We will have a more detailed breakdown of the evening tomorrow night when we release Episode 131. Thank you so much for listening. You can subscribe to the Next Best Picture Podcast on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, GooglePlay, Tunein, PlayerFM, Acast & Castbox or you can listen down below. After looking at the acting categories and the categories I personally deem to be locks for the 91st Academy Awards, we now come to the final remaining categories. These are the categories which have been giving me sleepless nights these past few days, especially when the guilds decided to truly go their own way this year and many of the precursors we rely on to tell us about these categories rewarded films which didn't end up receiving Oscar nominations in the end anyway. For these articles, I typically tend to rely on stats with a hint of gut instinct thrown in there. Today, I'm going to mostly be relying on my gut because for these categories, stats have truly failed us this year....or have they? You may have heard me deliver my final Oscar predictions on Episode 130 of the podcast but after some thoughtful reflection and going through these one more time, I can honestly say that after this post goes up, these will be my final locked in Oscar predictions for the 91st Academy Awards.
By Matt Neglia
The 91st Academy Awards will be held this Sunday on February 24th 2019. After a whole year of thoughtful analysis, debate, arguing, stress, moments of joy and moments of defeat, it's all come down to this. All of the guilds are done, the critics have had their say and Oscar voting as of yesterday is officially over. Now, all that is left is to predict the winners. You've already heard some of our predictions on Episode 130, and you know who we want to win but now we want to hear from all of you! We are holding a contest to see who will get the most categories correct this Sunday. All categories must be guessed on with the submission deadline being the day of the awards, before the winners are announced. Click below to enter in your picks for the contest. Best of luck and enjoy the show!

As this divisive and often headache-inducing awards season comes to a close, a recurring phrase uttered all year among the team at Next Best Picture was “if I voted for the Oscars…” So, I decided to see what would happen not only if the Next Best Picture staff were all Oscar voters, but if we were the only Oscar voters. I polled our writers, and even did the famously-complicated preferential-style tally for Best Picture, just like the Academy. I now present the Academy Awards if they were decided exclusively by our team!

I know. I know. Is anything truly a lock on Oscar night? Shockers happen all the time. Contenders sweep the entire season, winning every award possible, like Jason Reitman's "Up In The Air" for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2009, and then out of the blue "Precious" wins on Oscar night. Since these posts are more rooted in stats than gut feeling (though, that sometimes plays a role as well), I think it's very fair to call certain categories locked and loaded for Oscar night on February 24th. There's not many but they do exist this year and while we wait for some of the final guilds to chime in for those categories, let's take a look at these. Click below to see my in-depth analysis on the categories I deem to be locks for the 91st Academy Awards and be sure to check out my previous article on the acting categories.

We have heard from the Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor's Guild Awards and most recently, the BAFTAs. Now, all that's left are the Academy Awards. As I've done the past couple of years, I will be doing a deep dive into each category to analyze who I think might win the Academy Award on February 24th using a combination of stats from the creation of the SAG Awards in 1994 to today along with gut instinct and intuition (which this year certainly requires). First up are the acting categories which have thrown us a few curveballs this season. Let's take a look. Click below to see my in-depth analysis on each of the four acting categories.

We’re 91 years into the Academy Awards. With such a long history and more than a hundred nominations each year, there are plenty of fascinating bits of trivia, stats, and other oddities to sift through. “Roma” alone led to plenty of firsts at the Oscars this year, while “Black Panther” broke new ground. To that end, I present to you our comprehensive list of trivia for the 91st Academy Awards.

The morning is finally here! After months and months of deliberation, campaigning, and plenty of arguing, the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards are here. As per usual, they came with plenty of surprises, more than a few snubs, and plenty to talk about. Let’s dive into our initial reactions to the nominations!
By Matt Neglia
After what has been one of the most brutal pre-nomination phases of the Oscars I can remember in quite some time, the day has finally come. The Academy has announced their nominations for the 91st Academy Awards to be held on February 24th 2019 (my birthday, of all days). Surprises, shocks and snubs were of course present as always. Click below to see the nominations.

Tomorrow is the big day. Everything we've talked about for the past 10 months culminates tomorrow. Starting at 8:20am EST, the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced. We have discussed on Episode 126 at great length, the reasoning behind our predictions, and now we have them all listed below for you to see. A reminder though, that for as many happy moments which will occur tomorrow for your favorite films or performances, there will be just as many snubs as well. Hearts WILL be broken. I guarantee you that. I think with the way this season has gone so far, it's important to remember to be respectful to each other. This season has gotten ugly on more than a few occssions and if someone likes a partciular film or performance you don't and they're happy that it got nominated, I ask that you don't take their happiness away from them. With that said, let's all take a deep breath, dive right in and hope that we can come up from the bottom for air on the other side. |
