2020 has been a strange year for theatre fans everywhere as most theaters have remained closed since mid-March. In this episode, we discuss the ways that we have engaged with theatre despite not being able to go in person from the Sondheim birthday concert to watching filmed musicals online, whether through the National Theatre or StarKid’s YouTube channel. We also talk about the resilience of the theatre community, the Ratatouille Tik Tok musical, and some organizations that could use your help. Take a listen to hear from myself, Michael Schwartz, Dan Bayer,Casey Lee Clark & Lauren LaMagna. The Next Best Theatre Podcast: Episode 35 - Our Reactions To The 74th Annual Tony Award Nominations10/19/2020

In what has been undoubtedly the oddest Tony season of our lifetimes, the 74th annual Tony Award nominations were announced this past Friday for the 2019-2020 Broadway season. The ceremony will be held virtually later this year (date currently unspecified) and we will be back for our winner predictions then with another free episode. Until then, take a listen down below to hear from myself, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark, Cody Dericks & Lauren LaMagna on this free full-length episode. Thank you so much for listening. We share our favorites, the ones we think didn’t work, and even discuss the musicals that we prefer to their original movies. With theaters across the country, and even the world, closed because of the quarantine, theatre can seem completely inaccessible. Broadway theaters closed on March 12 and are currently set to remain closed until at least June 7, and regional theatres have followed suit. While most people are stuck at home, this is the perfect time to explore some of the options for filmed theatre that exist online. While watching a filmed production doesn’t exactly recreate the experience of seeing a show in person, filmed theatre is a unique and worthwhile form of its own. Many productions already exist online and countless theatres are making their shows available right now because we’re all stuck at home. Whether you’re missing the theater experience or you want to take advantage of this time to learn more about theatre, here are some great sources for filmed productions to watch.

On this month’s Next Best Theatre episode, Michael Schwartz, Casey Lee Clark, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks and I talk about our experiences with and our thoughts on filmed theatre. We discuss some of the best ways that you can watch theatre digitally during quarantine and even make some recommendations! Last month gave us the gift that is Tom Hooper's film adaptation of "Cats." Naturally....there were a lot of things wrong with it. But where did most of those problems stem from? Well, for this month's Next Best Theatre Podcast, myself, Nicole Ackman and Cody Dericks travel deep inside of the mind of Andrew Lloyd Weber to figure out what is the point of "Cats." What makes it so endearing? Why did it work on stage but not on film? We discuss these topics and more on this bewildering podcast review. For this month's review, Michael Schwartz, Casey Lee Clark, Dan Bayer and I are back during this holiday season to discuss "She Loves Me." Inspired by Miklós László’s Parfumerie, the show follows in the tradition of "The Shop Around the Corner" and "In the Good Old Summertime" by placing the classic Hungarian play in a new context. With a score by the legendary Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, accompanied by a perfect Joe Masteroff book, "She Loves Me" has stood the test of time to remain one of the most perfect musical comedies to ever grace the Broadway stage. So why does it still feel underrated? We explore that and many other questions and themes around this musical gem. A terrific way to kick off the holiday season. The Tonys sometimes feel like the purest of the televised award shows. They’re a celebration of the Broadway community and everyone seems legitimately thrilled to be attending. Their most important feature is that they provide a glimpse into a very hard-to-access art form by showing off the Broadway season’s offerings to people across the country who might not be able to afford a trip to New York and the steep and ever-rising Broadway ticket prices. This year’s Tony Awards certainly exuded that warm and friendly feel that the Tonys are known and loved for. James Corden returned to host and delivered some very funny sketches while never making the award show feel like an extension of “The Late Late Show” (not a carpool karaoke session in sight!). His genuine love for Broadway was very clear and he managed to walk that tricky line of being a presence without making the show seem all about him.

The big day is here: we finally know who and what will be competing for the 2019 Tony Awards. This morning, Brandon Victor Dixon and Bebe Neuwirth revealed this year’s nomination on a live Facebook stream. The Tonys themselves will be hosted by James Corden on Sunday, June 9th. The other day, the Next Best Theatre team made their nominations predictions and while we did fairly well, there were definitely some snubs and some exciting recognition that we didn’t see coming. But we’re surely not the only ones who couldn’t have predicted that Glenda Jackson wouldn’t get a nomination for playing the titular role in "King Lear" and it’s unclear whether anyone guessed the entire Featured Actor in a Musical correctly.
