The Next Best Series Podcast: Episode 15 - "Small Axe," "The Crown" & Our Favorite TV Shows Of 202012/23/2020
By Matt Neglia
We're back for another show of television talk. Two months ago, we announced that we were launching a new format for Next Best Series. Much like Next Best Theatre, members of the NBP team get together once a month to talk about what television shows they're currently watching or re-watching. This month's show we''re discussing hit shows such as Netflix's "The Crown" and Steve McQueen's "Small Axe" anthology on Prime Video (and the debate of TV vs. film that the series has sparked amongst cinephiles). We also recap some of our favorite television shows of 2020 as we say goodbye to this landmark year in television history. Joining me for this episode we have Michael Schwartz & Ryan C. Showers. We encourage everyone to give us feedback on this new format and let us know what you think. Enjoy! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For the small price of $1 a month, you can receive this episode along with other exclusive podcast content, so be sure to subscribe here. Thank you so much for listening. Much like Next Best Theatre, members of the NBP team get together once a month to talk about what television shows they're currently watching or re-watching. We talk about the experience of watching non-stop news coverage for a week , including new shows such as "The Queen's Gambit," "The Undoing" and more! Joining me for this episode we have Michael Schwartz, Nicole Ackman and Dan Bayer. We encourage everyone to give us feedback on this new format and let us know what you think. Enjoy! We're trying something new! Previously, whenever we talked about television on the podcast it was for either just the Emmys or for a specific miniseries or show that everyone wanted to discuss over the course of a couple of weeks. Following the same formula as the Next Best Theatre Podcast, we will be getting together once a month to talk about the various television shows we have been watching, new and old. These monthly shows will be Patreon exclusive. Joining me for this first new episode we have Michael Schwartz, Nicole Ackman and Ryan C. Showers. Shows discussed include: "Emily In Paris," "The Comey Rule," "The Boys," "Scandal," "New Girl" and more! We encourage everyone to give us feedback on this new format and let us know what you think. Enjoy! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. "Welcome to the Pandemmys" said host Jimmy Kimmel as he welcomed us to the most interesting award show we have ever seen. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are behind us and as expected the top three big shows, "Succession," "Schitt's Creek" and "Watchmen" all walked away with the top prizes on the night. But there were still surprises to be had. There were still memorable moments. Stats were broken. Technical glitches were had. Here to join me to talk about everything that went down, capping off an unforgettable year of television I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz & Tom O'Brien. Thank you so much for listening. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be held this Sunday, capping off what has been not only a phenomenal year of television but also one of the most unique years we've ever experienced. COVID-19 forced us and Emmy voters to stay in-doors and watch more shows than ever before. What impact will that have on the winners? What are we predicting? Here to join me I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers & Tom O'Brien. We'll be back to discuss the show and the winners on our next episode! Thank you so much for listening. The 2020 Emmy Nominations were announced this morning and as always, they invoked an emotional response from all of us. Some of our favorites got in and some of our favorites were snubbed. There were surprises, head-scratchers and everything else in between. Moments after the nominees were finished being announced, myself, Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers & Amanda Spears took some time during our lunch breaks to deliver our instant reactions to the nominations. We weren't originally going to record one of these but we figured we'd do something fun for the Patreon subscribers. We will be back in a few weeks with a full winner predictions podcast for all of our listeners before the 72nd Emmy Awards on September 20th. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For the small price of $1 a month, you can receive this review along with other exclusive podcast content, so be sure to subscribe here. Thank you so much for listening. As we approach the first major awards show of the COVID-19 era, Next Best Series regulars Matt Neglia, Tom O'Brien, Ryan C. Showers and I have been busy catching up with Emmy contenders in order to predict the nominees for the upcoming telecast. While the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards promise to be anything but typical, one thing we do know now is that there is more television to go around than the categories can handle. With that being the case, your experts have made their best predictions based on a combination of knowledge, insight, and pure gut feelings (you can listen to them on our recently recorded podcast here). It’s all part of the fun of predicting and brings back a sense of semi-normalcy in these most unusual times. Take a look below and see who scores the highest when nominations are revealed on July 28th.

The 2020 Emmy Nominations are a week away and myself, Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers, Tom O'Brien & special guest Megan McLachlan from Awards Daily TV are all here to deliver our final predictions for what we think will be nominated. It's been quite a year for television with people watching more than usual due to being stuck at home in quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic. Will that reflect in the nominations? Tune in below to find out and be sure to check back after the nominations for our predicted winners! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Series Podcast is back where we discuss television! For this week, we wrap up miniseries Emmy contender "Mrs. America" starring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Margo Martindale and more as they portrayal real-life political figures (and Sarah Paulson playing a pivotal fictional character, especially in these final three episodes) involved in the Women's Rights Movement of the 1970s. This first podcast covered episodes 1-3, the second one covered episodes 4-6 and now we've covering episodes 7-9 along with a discussion on the show's Emmy prospects. Joining me for this final podcast I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers & Dan Bayer. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. With Emmy Season approaching, I’m sure a lot of us are thinking about not only the current shows that we love but also the influential, impactful shows that are no longer around. And in terms of art that made a definite dent in the pop culture conversation, few TV shows this century have reached the level of ABC's “Lost”. For a television show that was such a talking point for the better part of a decade, the current feeling towards “Lost” is generally one of either ambivalence or disappointment from its viewers. While the show started strong both in terms of reviews, ratings, and awards, its finale has widely been regarded as a letdown, and that reception has only grown in the decade since it aired. I recently finished my first ever watch-through of the series and since I had somehow managed to completely avoid any details of what happens across the course of the show, I was able to go into the finale with a fairly unclouded perspective. And somewhat surprisingly, I loved it. Since this month marks exactly ten years since the finale aired, now is the perfect time to reassess it and explore some of the common complaints lodged against it. An obvious warning: spoilers will be discussed, so proceed with caution if you’ve also been putting off watching “Lost”.

For this week's main podcast review, I am once again joined by Josh Parham & Dan Bayer but this time we are talking about a television movie! "Bad Education" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and was acquired by HBO where it will now be competing for the Emmys instead of the Oscars as a television movie. Directed by Cory Finley ("Thoroughbreds") and starring Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney in excellent roles, the film depicts the true life story of the Long Island public school embezzlement scandal from 2002. Tune in to hear our thoughts, how we think the film will do at the Emmys and more! Thank you so much for listening. Season five of "Better Call Saul" ended a few weeks back with a rather excellent finale. Slowly, but surely, we’re watching Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) fully transform into the scumbag persona of Saul Goodman we know so well from "Breaking Bad". Something that "Better Call Saul" benefits from is the fact that there’s a predetermined ending. Maybe not for the show, but for specific characters. We know Jimmy becomes Saul, we just don't know what causes him to achieve his full transformation. Then, aside from a few characters, most of the main roster on "Better Call Saul" doesn’t appear in "Breaking Bad," which could mean that some of these characters could become collateral damage when it comes to Jimmy's transformation. One of the characters in the show that’s both a fan favorite and critical darling is Kim Wexler, played by Rhea Seehorn. She has practically become a co-lead to Odenkirk and has been fantastic throughout the entirety of the show. Despite being involved from the very beginning, Seehorn has yet to be nominated for an Emmy for her work on "Better Call Saul." It’s a crime all on its own, but it sort of falls in line with another actress in the "Breaking Bad" world.

The Next Best Series Podcast is back where we discuss television! For our first miniseries Emmy contender, we are reviewing "Mrs. America" starring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Margo Martindale and more as they portrayal real-life political figures involved in the Women's Rights Movement of the 1970s. This first podcast covers episodes 1-3 which can be streamed currently on Hulu. We will be back in the future with two more podcasts covering episodes 4-6 and 7-9. The first shot fired on November 1: The debut of AppleTV+. It introduced four new streaming series, with the promise of many more as the week's progress. Accessible in about 100 countries, Apple streaming launches with a worldwide reach that will likely dwarf even the mighty Disney+, which has finally flipped the switch on its streaming service. According to the Financial Times, AppleTV+ has poured more than $6 billion into original programming for the service, and their plan appears to be rolling out new shows gradually, effectively ensuring that there will be a steady stream of products to keep subscribers happy. On paper, the rollout of only four series, all remarkably different, appeared to be a wise one so that the public can more easily evaluate the quality of their shows. But are they any good? And more importantly, should you subscribe? I watched the first three episodes of each series and based on viewing those, I have a few thoughts on all four.

While I agree with a lot of people that "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie" was not entirely necessary, I was still thoroughly happy that it ended up being made. The film doesn't quite tell us anything new about the characters of the hit television show, but it does add some closure. "El Camino" also goes about hammering home a couple of key themes from the show throughout the movie that I think is done in a rather spectacular manner. Most of the key points are told through flashbacks which is always a risky road to take in a movie, especially a movie based around a television show that ended six years ago. So I'd like to break down some key moments from "El Camino" that make the film much more layered than it appears to be, exploring why using flashbacks as a form of plant and payoff and as a form of catharsis might be the best use of the tool in the film format.

For this extra podcast review, we are taking a look at a movie that we didn't necessarily know we needed until we saw it: "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie." Acting as an epilogue to the hit AMC show and reuniting series creator Vince Gilligan with star Aaron Paul and a few others, this surprise movie gave us the closure we wanted for one of television's most beloved shows and characters. Joining me for this special Patreon podcast review I have Jack Shipley, Josh Blumenkranz & Charles Bright. Despite my intense studying, following, and analyzing the Emmy awards for the past six years, I have never held the limited series/TV movie categories to the same standard which I do the Drama and Comedy races. When I really began to become invested in the Emmys to a similar degree as my investment in the Oscars and film awards, many called it the “golden age” of television, when “Mad Men,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland,” “The Good Wife,” “House of Cards,” “Downton Abbey,” and “Breaking Bad” were all fighting for the golden trophies from the Television Academy at full throttle. Heck, during this time, when Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s first season of “True Detective” set the world on fire, HBO made the strategic decision of entering the seven-episode narrative in the Drama series categories, rather than Limited/Miniseries. “True Detective” would have had a guaranteed sweep of every category that year had it proceeded as limited series, instead of only winning the directing achievement in the drama series category. Due to this decision, McConaughey lost to Bryan Cranston in a stunning upset. In my view, HBO made this decision because they didn’t want their prized possession winning the second fiddle, small potatoes, less prestigious categories at the Emmys. My, how times have changed. |
