Sometimes the split categories at the Golden Globes create feelings of unworthiness and, specifically, many people view the Comedy/Musical categories as inferior to the Drama categories. This year, that’s not the case. The competition in the Best Picture Comedy/Musical category is one to write home about. “The Favourite” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “Vice” all have a viable chance to triumph. Any one of the masterclass contenders could win this category in a cakewalk in a weaker year. Though it deserved its nomination, “Crazy Rich Asians” is not in contention to win the prize. It should be happy it was nominated here to begin with. “Vice” overperformed and earned six nominations; “The Favourite” and “Green Book” each accumulated five nominations; and “Mary Poppins Returns” scored four nominations. It’s an embarrassment of riches.

It’s increasingly becoming clear that “A Star Is Born” is being positioned to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It avoided controversy from the time of its early release in October through now, after scoring across-the-board love with Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG nominations. Along with “Black Panther” and “BlacKkKlansman,” it’s one of the few Best Picture contenders to garner a SAG Cast Ensemble nomination, which until last year, was an ironclad award to measure Best Picture possibility. When I saw “A Star Is Born” opening day, it struck me as a film like “Birdman,” something the Academy will love because of the subject matter, talent involved, and style. How it will perform on a preferential ballot remains up in the air, while pundits disagree over whether it will do well or poorly. I believe it’s going to do just fine on the preferential ballot, as opposed to films like “Green Book,” “The Favourite,” and “Roma.” I remain constant in that prediction, and no other film has proven it has the gusto to really fill the mold of a Best Picture winner.

This morning the Hollywood Foreign Press unveiled the nominations for the 76th Golden Globe Awards. While the Globes can sometimes be a strange detour on the awards path, their status as the second-biggest televised awards show gives their awards merit. As always, there were plenty of expected nominations that missed, movies that underperformed and overperformed, and lots of learnings for where the race is headed. Let’s break down the snubs, surprises, and takeaways from the Golden Globe nominations.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will unveil the 76th Golden Globe nominations tomorrow morning bright and early at 5am PT/8am EST. The state of the awards race is about to be adjusted with clarity. I encourage everyone to enter NextBestPicture’s Golden Globe prediction contest here. The biggest mistakes I see people make when predicting the Golden Globes is mischaracterizing the HFPA’s taste and predicting the nominations as though they are the Oscars. You need to understand how they have habitually voted for years, different from the Oscars, to be accurate. For instance, the HPFA is dazzled by big-name Hollywood movie stars. They love central, emotional, and loud performances and clear awards bait, such as actors portraying non-fictional characters. Their choices often reflect the cultural moment; they have their fingers on the pulse of what’s new and fresh. The HFPA also loves flashy execution of stories. The more glitter and intensity, the better. They tend to like dramedies with strong tones that are focused on the actors. Satirical plots critical of America and films with high production values typically go over well, too. Beware of smaller films, subtle performances, and projects seen as dated with no modern relevance.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association have handed out their annual Golden Globe awards to films, television shows, and artists. Though these awards have no direct effect on the Academy Awards – no one who votes for the Golden Globes also votes for the Oscars – they do serve the award season. Most would argue that they are meaningless and merely ego-boosting publicity stunts. But the way the Golden Globes function is that they provide a venue for frontrunners to build momentum heading into the guild awards or for films to gain attention that were otherwise being ignored. With undetectable frontrunners in the Best Picture and Best Actress categories prior to the ceremony, the Golden Globes may have shined a light on a potential direction the rest of the season could head in.

The nominations for the 75th Golden Globe Awards were announced yesterday morning, and as expected, they were full of snubs and surprises. Thanks to their high profile, the Globes can impact the public perception of the awards race in a lot of ways. Run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes have zero overlaps with Oscar voters, so they don’t necessarily give us a picture of how the Academy will vote. Still, this year the Academy Award nominations open only two days before the Globes, meaning the winners could affect the minds of the voters. So let’s take a look at how the Golden Globe nominations could impact the Oscar race.
By Josh Tarpley
The Golden Globe nominations are here and for the most part...this is a great looking batch of nominees. On one hand there is a lot of loathe towards the show, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is an obscure group (85-90) members whose Comedy/Musical categories are a point of contention every year. On the other hand, the road to an Oscar nomination is one of building buzz. Getting recognized on the second biggest televised awards show right before nominations come out is nothing to scoff at. With more categories comes opportunity to honor more great work, but also makes it harder for those who missed out on the expanded field. Click beyond the jump to see the best surprises and worse snubs from this year’s Golden Globe nominees.

The nominations for the two award shows with the most notoriety prior to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, will be announced on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. These two award shows hold creditability and stature that benefit films and artists in different ways. The Golden Globes are the second most publicized event of the year after the Academy Awards, and they hold a greater level of importance than they used to. This is mostly due to the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press often has their fingers on the pulse of the progressive and modern cultural moment. However, the Golden Globes do not have any direct correlation to or impact on the Oscars, rather, they simply allow filmmakers and actors chances to gain momentum through speeches, appearances, and word-of-mouth acclaim. SAG, on the other hand, is made up of voters who actually vote in the Oscars, which can serve as indicative evidence in predicting which actors will be nominated for the Academy Awards and who will win.
