While most of the world had a pretty bad year, a few performers had a great year, at least professionally, and received multiple Golden Globe nominations for their work. Three performers this year received two acting nominations: Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Comedy/Musical Actor for "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and Best Supporting Actor for "The Trial of the Chicago 7;" Olivia Colman for Best Drama TV Actress for "The Crown" and Best Supporting Actress for "The Father;" and Anya Taylor-Joy for Best Comedy/Musical Actress for "Emma." and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for "The Queen's Gambit." Will they walk home double-empty-handed or with at least one trophy?

As we rapidly approach the Golden Globe nominations, let's round out the television categories by taking a look at predictions in the drama categories. You can check out my previous post on the Comedy/Musical TV contenders here.

With Golden Globe voting currently underway, it is time for me to reveal my predictions for the upcoming Golden Globe nominations, which will be announced on February 3rd (You can listen to my television predictions in full on our latest episode of the Next Best Series Podcast here). This year, the story is all about Netflix, Netflix and Netflix. After the industry's COVID shutdown, it wouldn't be surprising to find the streamer dominating on both the film and television fronts. But the Golden Globes love to spread the wealth around, which could lead to some interesting snubs and surprises.

The HFPA is continuing to shake up the awards race, as the Golden Globes have reportedly shifted more category placements. As films submit for Globes consideration, the HFPA makes the final decision on whether films qualify for the Drama or the Musical & Comedy categories and whether actors should belong in Leading or Supporting categories. Variety reports some new changes, including for major Oscar contender "One Night in Miami..."

As reported by THR, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced that the eligibility window for the 2021 awards ceremony will be until February 28, 2021, the same as that of the Academy Awards. In June, it was announced that the awards ceremony, which is typically held in early January, would now take place on February 28th, 2021.

On the morning of the Golden Globe nominations announcement, I excitedly checked my phone to see all the nominees. There were some highlights like Roman Griffin Davis securing an acting nomination and “Knives Out” getting recognition! Of course, not all of my favorite movies and actors made it into the major categories, but that happens every year. It was one category in particular that stuck out to me drastically: Best Director. There were a few men that I assumed would (and should) get in the category like Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood,” and Noah Baumbach for “Marriage Story” (who somehow got snubbed.) I admire these filmmakers and their precise craftsmanship. I was convinced that either Greta Gerwig, Lulu Wang, or Lorene Scafaria could secure their Best Director nomination for “Little Women,” “The Farewell,” or “Hustlers.” Surely, a woman could take up one slot out of the five, right? Wrong.

Let’s dive into some snubs, surprises, and takeaways from the Golden Globe nominations.

If there’s one thing you can no longer criticize about the 2018-2019 awards season, it’s entertainment value. From the drawn-out Oscar hosting saga to the previously announced and rapidly redacted plans for a Best Popular Film award, to the emergence of several surprising contenders who, especially following the Golden Globe results, appear to be staking their claim in a major awards run.

Where to even begin? The 76th Golden Globes held so many surprises in the film race. The Globes don’t often affect the Oscars too drastically. After all, there is zero overlap in the voting bodies. Still, with Academy voting opening today, it’s hard to not think these shocking results, broadcast to a pretty sizable audience, will shake up the race. Let’s not beat around the bush and dive right into our two Best Picture winners.

Sometimes the split categories at the Golden Globes create feelings of unworthiness and, specifically, many people view the Comedy/Musical categories as inferior to the Drama categories. This year, that’s not the case. The competition in the Best Picture Comedy/Musical category is one to write home about. “The Favourite” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “Vice” all have a viable chance to triumph. Any one of the masterclass contenders could win this category in a cakewalk in a weaker year. Though it deserved its nomination, “Crazy Rich Asians” is not in contention to win the prize. It should be happy it was nominated here to begin with. “Vice” overperformed and earned six nominations; “The Favourite” and “Green Book” each accumulated five nominations; and “Mary Poppins Returns” scored four nominations. It’s an embarrassment of riches.

It’s increasingly becoming clear that “A Star Is Born” is being positioned to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It avoided controversy from the time of its early release in October through now, after scoring across-the-board love with Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG nominations. Along with “Black Panther” and “BlacKkKlansman,” it’s one of the few Best Picture contenders to garner a SAG Cast Ensemble nomination, which until last year, was an ironclad award to measure Best Picture possibility. When I saw “A Star Is Born” opening day, it struck me as a film like “Birdman,” something the Academy will love because of the subject matter, talent involved, and style. How it will perform on a preferential ballot remains up in the air, while pundits disagree over whether it will do well or poorly. I believe it’s going to do just fine on the preferential ballot, as opposed to films like “Green Book,” “The Favourite,” and “Roma.” I remain constant in that prediction, and no other film has proven it has the gusto to really fill the mold of a Best Picture winner.

This morning the Hollywood Foreign Press unveiled the nominations for the 76th Golden Globe Awards. While the Globes can sometimes be a strange detour on the awards path, their status as the second-biggest televised awards show gives their awards merit. As always, there were plenty of expected nominations that missed, movies that underperformed and overperformed, and lots of learnings for where the race is headed. Let’s break down the snubs, surprises, and takeaways from the Golden Globe nominations.
