I, a humble film snob, have not yet managed to see every film that has been awarded the Palme d'Or. However, from the several dozen I have seen, I have been rewarded with thrills, tears, and elation from some of the most influential, unique, and dynamic films made in every corner of the globe over the past three-quarters of a century. With a jury that changes every year, the Cannes Film Festival certainly invites controversy and discussion more-so than other awards-giving bodies, often resulting in recognition of films that would otherwise be missed by casual film fans and giving the world's most brilliant talents a stage on which to share their art with the world. Many of the Palme d'Or winners rank among the greatest films ever made, and it is here that I would like to recommend just a handful for your viewing pleasure as the 75th anniversary of the festival kicks off this week. While I'm sure many of you have seen popular titles such as "Taxi Driver," "The Tree Of Life," "Pulp Fiction" and "Parasite," I'm going to mention some others (with viewing links) I think you should seek out.

Excluding 2020, which did not have a Cannes Film Festival due to the pandemic, NEON has had a very strong presence over the past few years. Having won the Palme d'Or over the past two festivals with Julia Ducournau's "Titane" in 2021 and Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" in 2019, it seems like NEON knows how to play the festival game when it comes to selecting their films for consideration at Cannes. This year, NEON has all of their eggs in one basket as their only film to compete for the Palme d'Or is David Cronenberg's "Crimes Of The Future." With that, it is time to see how NEON managed to pull out their previous wins, what impact those wins had, and whether they can score another victory this year.

As promised, the 2022 Cannes Film Festival has added new titles to its lineup in both competition and out of competition. Three big titles have been announced for the In Competition section of the festival, including Albert Serra's "Tourment sur les iles," Léonor Serraille's "Un Petit Frere," and "Le Otto Montagne" from filmmakers Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix Van Groeninge ("Beautiful Boy"). But that's not all, though; Serge Bozon's much anticipated "Don Juan" and Emmanuel Mouret's "Chronique d'une liaison passagère," have been added to the Cannes Premiere section. Louis Garrel's "L'innocent," starring the writer-director himself, Anouk Grinberg and Noémie Merlant, will play out of competition. "Don Juan" is a title that a lot of people have had their eyes on in particular, due to the presence of Tahar Rahim ("The Mauritanian") and Virginie Efira ("Benedetta") in what is said to be a romantic musical comedy. The Official Selection for the festival's competition section now has five films directed by women, which is a record for the festival after last year's festival only had four (out of twenty-one) titles from female filmmakers. There is still a long way for the festival to go in regards to satisfying their harshest critics with this area but it's still a step in the right direction. As of right now, no Jury members have been announced for the competition titles for this year's festival but we should be hearing about that in the next few days. The 2022 Cannes Film Festival will run from May 17th until May 28th, 2022. Click below to see the full lineup now with these additions including Critics' Week.

The lineup for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival has been announced, but early this morning, we were treated to the announcement of the lineup for this year's Cannes Directors' Fortnight. The sidebar will run May 18th until May 27th, right alongside the main festival and it contains a ton of high profile films this year, including a pair of highly anticipated A24 films: Alex Garland's "Men" starring Oscar-nominee Jessie Buckley and "God's Creatures," the new film from Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer ("The Fits") starring Aisling Franciosi, Emily Watson and Paul Mescal. Coming off of last year's Cannes appearance for "Bergman's Island," Mia Hansen-Løve will be returning with "One Fine Morning," starring Lea Seydoux, Melvil Poupaud, and Nicole Garcia, while last year's "Benedetta" star, Virginie Efira, will be starring in "Paris Memories." The lineup is female-heavy, with eleven films directed by women, a stark contrast to the Cannes Film Festival's competition lineup, which only had three female-directed films. Are we really on the verge of another Cannes Film Festival? Didn't the Oscars just conclude a few days ago? No matter. The 2022 season is on, and if the Cannes Film Festival festival lineup announced yesterday morning by festival director Thierry Frémaux is any indication of the film year to come, we are in for one hell of a ride in 2022. The 49 films that will be premiering at the 2022 festival include a wide array of international titles, with, happily, a particularly strong representation of films from Asia. On the other hand, sadly, the festival's notorious lack of representation for women filmmakers rages on, with the number of female-directed films in competition this year actually falling from four to a mere three compared to last year.

The official line-up to the 75th Cannes Film Festival was announced this morning, showcasing the films that would be competing for the coveted Palmes d'Or and the films that would make their world premiere at the prestigious event. While the list of films is shorter, with only 18 films announced for the Official Competition instead of the 24 last year, there is plenty to look forward to and analyze with this year's selection. Not only that but there are still plans to announce more films before the festival takes place in May.

The Cannes Film Festival came roaring back in 2021 with an impressive lineup that saw the world premieres of Academy Award Best Picture nominee (and International Feature winner) "Drive My Car," multi Oscar-nominated "The Worst Person In The World," and the Palme d'Or winner "Titane." Now, the festival celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and the lineup speaks to the grandeur, sophistication, and variety of what Cannes is all about in presenting the best in world cinema to a global audience. We do not currently know who this year's president of the Official Competition jury will be but the lineup has us extremely excited, especially because this will be Next Best Picture's first year covering Cannes on the ground with our own Amy Smith in attendance. Just as the 2021 awards season concludes, it's time to get excited and speculate about another film festival. Often considered the most prestigious festival in the world, the Cannes Film Festival is where many renowned international auteurs show off their work. Last year's edition was the first one since the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered the 2020 edition, with Spike Lee's jury awarding the coveted first place Palme d'Or to Julia Ducournau's "Titane," making the French director only the second woman to direct a Palme d'Or winning film (Jane Campion did it first in 1993 for "The Piano"). Even though it often contains a small selection of American titles, Cannes still plays a sizable role in the Oscar race. Along with "Titane," last year's festival saw the launches of players such as "The Worst Person in the World" and "Drive My Car." In prior years, "Parasite," "Amour," "The Tree of Life," and even "Pulp Fiction" began their awards season journeys on the Croisette.

From a bomb scare to saliva tests to a goofed-up Palme d'Or reveal, the 74th Cannes Film Festival provided twelve enormously memorable days to kick off the 2021 awards season. Were there any Oscar contenders to emerge from the festival? Let's take a dive into the reactions and see where things stand.

After not having a festival last year, the Cannes Film Festival came roaring back this year with 24 films in competition including, "Ahed's Knee," "Annette," "Benedetta," "Bergman Island," "Casablanca Beats," "Compartment No. 6," "The Divide," "Drive My Car," "Everything Went Fine," "Flag Day," "France," "The French Dispatch," "A Hero," "Lingu," "Memoria," "Nitram," "Paris, 13th District," "Petrov's Flu," "Red Rocket," "The Restless," "The Story of My Wife," "Three Floors," "Titane" & "The Worst Person in the World." The jury selecting the winners for the awards this year included Mati Diop, Mylène Farmer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Hausner, Mélanie Laurent, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Tahar Rahim, Song Kang-ho & Jury President Spike Lee. With the 2021 Cannes film Festival coming to a close and a new Palme d'Or winner about to be announced, I decided to take a look back at the earlier days of the the festival, which is now one of the most venerated film festivals in the world. The inaugural event in 1946 had a false start. It was a do-over of a previous attempt in 1939 that fell through due to unforeseen circumstances. Conceived by the French as an alternative to the Venice Film Festival, at the time the only international film festival and one dominated by fascist leanings and propaganda, the ceremony was scheduled to take place from September 1st to 20th, 1939, in the French seaside town now so synonymous with cinematic excellence.

Cannes is back, baby! If the lineup for the 2021 Festival, announced this morning by festival director Thierry Frémaux, is any indication of its quality, it's back in a massive way. The 63 films that will be premiering at Cannes include a wide array of international titles, many of which were set to premiere at the 2020 festival (which was forced to be canceled because of the pandemic) but which waited on their release dates so that they could be at Cannes in 2021.

After seeing the 2020 Cannes Film Festival get canceled due to COVID-19, the festival is back this summer from July 6th-17th, better than ever! "Cinema is not dead," said artistic director Thierry Frémaux during this morning's press conference, "and the return of audiences to movie theaters around the world was the first good news. And the festival will be the second good news." Spike Lee is the president of this year's Official Competition jury while it was announced earlier this week that Jodie Foster will receive an honorary Palme d’Or award. Often considered the most prestigious film festival globally, the Cannes Film Festival is your one-stop shop for some of the greatest works in international cinema. For the first time since 1968, the festival was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's edition has the potential to be one of the best as dozens of projects from the world's greatest filmmakers jockey for the opportunity to be awarded the coveted first place Palme d'Or, which will be decided by a Spike Lee led jury. Twenty films will be selected for the Official Competition, with several others being placed in one of the festival's many sidebar sections. And quite a few unlucky films will have to set their sights somewhere else. Cannes also has its place in the Oscar race. To use a sports analogy, it is the preseason to the fall festivals regular season. Films such as "Pulp Fiction," "The Tree of Life," "Amour" and "Parasite" started their Oscar path at the festival. In this article, I will detail the films that have the potential to premiere at the festival. They are sorted into three categories based on their likelihood, which stemming from a combination of factors that are explained in each summary. The festival will announce the lineup for all sections on June 3rd.

Even though the 2020 Cannes Film Festival was officially cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux still announced the 56 films that made the cut for the 2020 Official Selection. These movies will be able to carry the Cannes label into other film festivals (if they happen) later this year. We may not know which of these would've won the Palme d'Or but we can now at least think of what could've been. Click below to see this year's official selection.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most well-known and prestigious film festivals in the world, with an emphasis on showcasing the greatest artistic achievements from around the world. With such a rich history and beautiful setting, Cannes can come across as one big fancy event, with its lavish red carpets and massive press conferences. However, it's impossible to ignore the number of incredible films that come out of the festival every year, some of which would not be on people’s radars otherwise. From massive triumphs by well-known directors to smaller international films, the films that premiere at Cannes are always ones to take notice of and put towards the top of your eventual watchlist for the rest of the coming year. Based on critical buzz and the various awards that were given out, here are ten films that we are excited about from this year’s Cannes Film Festival!

With this past weekend’s announcement of the awards for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, there were, of course, a good amount of people hoping that some of the winners would find similar success at the Oscars (Antonio Banderas, in particular, seemed to receive most of this talk). So I decided to do a quick little investigation into the track record of Cannes’s awards when it comes to predicting the Oscars. Are they a reliable bellwether, or should they be considered their own separate, but still prestigious, awards body?

Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” celebrated a very successful run at Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, essentially second place to the Palme d’Or. It would appear that this could be Lee’s most critically acclaimed film in years. He’s always had a complicated relationship with the Academy Awards. Could “BlacKkKlansman” bring him his first Best Director nomination?

The 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival begins today, and with it a slew of anticipated titles will premiere on the big screen. Per usual, the titles scheduled to premiere at Cannes have already given us plenty to talk about, both in terms of content and in terms of the pedigree of the actors and filmmakers behind them. From long-gestating passion projects and eclectic dramas to sophomore efforts by promising talents, the lineup is wildly impressive in its scope, even with the recent controversy surrounding Cannes and their banning of Netflix films from the competition. “When we do a review of the year,” said festival director Thierry Frémaux, “We say to ourselves, 'We weren't daring enough'... This selection reflects that desire to be a bit more daring, to take more risks." With that in mind, here are some of the films that we’re anticipating most ahead of today's festival. |
