Yesterday was the 2022 BAFTAs, and while the show was pre-recorded, there was still an awards ceremony telecasted in the UK. With last year's ceremony lining up almost exactly to the Oscar line-up, many award pundits were glued to their phones, waiting in anticipation for each winner to be announced online. This year has been more chaotic than average regarding the precursors, with the Golden Globes not having a telecast and the Critic's Choice Awards and BAFTAs occurring on the same night, so perhaps more people will be defaulting this year to the BAFTA winners than having done so previously. Now, let's break down what exactly happened on the British land.

The 2022 EE BAFTA Awards will be held this weekend on Sunday, March 13th. Considering they are one of the few groups with Academy membership crossover, they can sometimes help sway our final Oscar predictions as they can confirm, turn the tide, or provide misdirection with their choices. We are sharing our predictions down below and kindly ask you to participate in our contest where the winner will receive a pair of Oscar-nominated films on 4K/BluRayDVD (provided that they have a United States Address). All categories must be predicted, with the submission deadline being the day of the awards, before the winners are announced. Please click below to enter your picks for the contest. Best of luck and enjoy the show!

The 2022 EE British Academy Film Award nominations were announced yesterday, and even with the jury system in place and change of rules to prevent the major snubs, there was still plenty of surprises with who missed out and who made it in. So, what do these nominations mean, and who is in a strong position to score a nomination at the Oscars this upcoming Tuesday? I delve into the above-the-line categories below, but if you have not already seen members of the NBP team reacting live to the BAFTA nominations yesterday, you can do so on our Patreon here.

Last year, the BAFTA winners ended up matching nearly exactly to the eventual Oscar winners, with BAFTA giving the signs of Anthony Hopkins and Frances McDormand taking the lead and scoring the big awards on Oscar night. Not only that, but the BAFTA nominations are the final major precursor before the Oscar nominations are revealed, perhaps suggesting a strong case for an International Feature contender to break out in the Director race as Thomas Vinterberg did last year for "Another Round." However, predicting the BAFTA nominations is not the same as predicting the Oscars or other major award shows. With the longlists already revealed for every category, it has already been shown which films have done well with the general voting body and which films couldn't even crack this list. Additionally, the jury system in some of the major categories, including Director and the acting categories, means that some performances with less buzz could, and possibly will, crack the list. There are the two saves in the acting categories this year to avoid a snub on the level of Carey Mulligan in "Promising Young Woman," but it will be interesting to see what impact this will have in this year's nomination. Regardless, here are my (and Matt Neglia's) predictions for what will be nominated at the 2022 EE British Academy Film Awards.
By Amy Smith
Last year, the BAFTA longlist helped narrow down the race and see which films voters watched and, most importantly, enjoyed. Aside from the main contenders throughout award season such as "Mank," "Nomadland," and "Promising Young Woman," the longlist showed a passion for films that had established themselves in the British market. The London Film Festival audience award winner "Another Round" and three-time London Critics Circle Film Awards winner "The Mauritanian" showed up numerous times in the longlist, going on to establish themselves as nominees for several BAFTA awards.

The BAFTA's will be held this weekend in a special two-day event from April 10th-April 11th. As one of the last major precursors (with Academy crossover) they can sometimes help sway our final Oscar predictions or reinforce our beliefs heading into Oscar night. This year though may be different due to new voting systems which were put into place. We'll have to wait and see how it all goes but for now, we have our final predictions down below for you to check out along with our contest for you to predict the winners. All categories must be predicted with the submission deadline being the day of the awards, before the winners are announced. Click below to enter in your picks for the contest. When many Oscar pundits turned on the stream for the 2021 BAFTA nominations reveal, there was hope that specific categories would be clarified. However, this year some new rules have shaken up the nominees and given some names that none of us could have predicted. After the drama of last year's nominations, it is time to look at the rule changes and analyze the impact of this year on the BAFTAs going forward.

After the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations and the Screen Actors Guild nominations, it left a puzzle of unanswered questions. Trying to pinpoint Oscar nominations in a substantial and reasoned way has been essentially on ice, waiting for the British Academy to weigh in with their picks. Understanding and making informed decisions about predictions for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress is even more dependent on BAFTA this year than in year's past. The new rules put in place by BAFTA, extending the acting categories from five nominees per category to six, will provide an ample amount of opportunities for off-the-wall surprises, too. Here is an outline of how BAFTA could help clarify the Oscar contenders.

"BAFTA will clear things up." This is a phrase many of us have replayed over and over in our heads, trying to make our way through the maze that is award season 2020-2021. The nature of this award season is inherently tricky because of the pandemic. But on top of that, the gulf between the critics association's selections and the televised precursors could not be wider. Additionally, the lineups for the Critics' Choice, SAG, and Golden Globes have presented a lot of room for interpretation in how to predict the Academy Awards nominees. It has left many of us saying, "It's all up to BAFTA."

We’re less than two short weeks away from the Academy Awards, and almost all of the precursors are behind us. Plenty of categories are still up in the air, even this close to the ceremony. Yesterday, the BAFTAs were awarded, giving us some last minute insight into how the Oscar winners might turn out. A few frontrunners were solidified, some races remain unclear, and even one or two dark horses kept their chances alive. Let’s take a look at how the BAFTAs might’ve impacted the Oscar race.

The 2019 EE BAFTA nominations were announced this morning. Being the last major stop on the road to the Oscar nominations on January 22 (and with Academy members currently voting on their ballots as we speak), many pundits were looking to them for help to clear the air on several categories. Honestly, I believe we were left with more questions than answers.
