The story of Michael Peterson, the mysterious death of his wife Kathleen Peterson, and the subsequent investigation, trial, and fallout on their family has challenged and fascinated audiences for years, starting with the 2004 true crime documentary series by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and now with HBO Max's "The Staircase." Written by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, with Campos directing six out of the eight episodes, the series has garnered critical acclaim for its performances and the exhausting detail which went into the research behind one of the most puzzled over mysteries of our time. Campos and Cohn joined us for a discussion following the show's finale to discuss their work on the series, what they really think happened to Kathleen Peterson, how the original documentary filmmakers are reacting to their portrayal in the series, and more. We hope you enjoy the conversation down below. Thank you. Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. After over a year of Broadway being dark, Broadway is back in full swing. The 2021-2022 season brought life back to the Great White Way with several revivals and new productions. Following last year's Tony Awards, where there were only a handful of eligible performances and shows due to the halted season from the COVID-19 pandemic, this season provided the theater audiences (and Tony voters) with a vast array of shows. On June 12, 2022, Academy Award Winner Ariana DeBose returned to New York City and Radio City Music Hall as host for the 75th Annual Tony Awards. For a full list of last night's winners, you can read them here. But for now, let's break down the significant events that occurred in celebrating all things Broadway.

The origin of Olivier Assayas' new HBO television miniseries, "Irma Vep," was born over a hundred years ago with Louis Feuillade, the writer and director of the 1915-16 crime serial "Les Vampires." Consisting of ten episodes, the film follows a journalist's attempts to uncover the goings-on of the titular Parisian criminal organization. "Les Vampires" was among several crime serials released at the time. Audiences had to return to the theater over the span of several months to see the story's completion, comparable to the future medium of must-see television. One character managed to endure the following century with her cultural impact: The gang's sole female member, Irma Vep, played by dancer, acrobat, filmmaker, and writer Musidora (née Jeanne Roques). Musidora was the prototypical vamp popular in the 1910s, akin to American actress Theda Bara. The vamp style would soon fall out of fashion by the end of the decade, as would film serials. Still, the influence of "Les Vampires" and Musidora would continue to be felt in the decades to come, as seen today with the positive reactions to "Irma Vep," which had its premiere episode on June 6th.

"The Phantom Of The Open" tells the unlikely true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a British golfer who, with no prior experience, managed to sneak his way into the pros and received the worst score ever recorded at the Open Championship. His determination to keep on playing and improve made him an inspiring figure for many to this day. Director Craig Roberts ("Tolkien") and screenwriter Simon Farnaby ("Paddington 2") came together to tell his story, and they do it with precision, liveliness, and delight. Both of them were kind enough to spend time talking about how they came across the project, working with Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins, what they hope audiences will take away from Maurice's story, and more. Please check out the film, now playing in theaters from Sony Pictures Classics, have a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you! Thank you so much for listening. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham & Amy Smith. Today, we're reviewing the latest film from the master of body horror after an eight-year long wait since his last feature film, David Cronenberg's "Crimes Of The Future." Starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux & Kristen Stewart, the film is a deep exploration of evolution, sex, technology, and the environment, packed into a science fictional world not too far away from our own. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is now playing in theaters from NEON. What did we think of the story, the characters, the performances, the world that Cronenberg has created, and more? Please tune in below to take a listen to our thoughts and enjoy! Writer and director Terence Davies' latest film "Benediction" premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received strong critical praise for its screenplay depicting the life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon and for the leading performance by Jack Lowden, with many citing it as the best of his career. Both Terence and Jack were kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing with us what drew them toward this biopic, what they learned about Siegfried in the making of this movie, their favorite poems by him, and more. Our 2012 retrospective continues with the breakout independent film of that year: Benh Zeitlin's beautifully realized feature directorial debut, "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," starring Quvenzhané Wallis & Dwight Henry. Critically acclaimed upon its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the film sustained its buzz throughout the year to pull off a miraculous awards campaign for Searchlight Pictures. What do we think of the film a decade later? Tune in below as Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Danilo Castro, and I discuss the film's themes, performances, cinematography, score, awards season run, etc. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," & "Amour" if you have not done so already. This year's Outstanding Comedy Series category at the Emmys is really tricky to determine which shows will be nominated at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. There are so many returning Emmy staples this year and brand-new shows for the Television Academy to choose from. While I can't say for sure what the eight nominees will be, I've put together all the shows worth considering and broke down how likely they are to make the lineup below.

A 96% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 99% Audience Score. A 78 Metascore on Metacritic with a 9.0 User Score. An A+ CinemaScore. And now, a $160.5 million Memorial Day opening at the box office. To say that "Top Gun: Maverick's" critical and commercial success is "surprising" is an understatement - this is a cinematic sensation that often comes along only once or twice a decade. And to make it all the more shocking, despite the original being a favorite of many 80s babies, it was never a critical hit, earning only a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 50 on Metacritic. In fact, when "Top Gun: Maverick" was first announced, many rolled their eyes. What story was there to continue from a cheesy 80s actioner remembered most for its soundtrack (and Oscar-winning single, "Take My Breath Away")?

"Moon Knight" premiered on Disney+ on March 30th, releasing one episode a week as it introduced audiences to the characters of Steven Grant and Mark Spector, both brilliantly played by Oscar Isaac in one of his finest performances to date. Be sure to take a listen down below and check out the show if you haven't yet to see Oscar's stunning work, which has him in the hunt for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nomination at this year's Primetime Emmy Awards. Another Cannes Film Festival is in the books. The 75th edition, which ran from May 17-28, was filled with several memorable moments -- from a squadron of fighter jets streaking across the Riviera skies to a sole political activist streaking across the Palais red carpet. From the film critics and Twitter devotees on the scene, the consensus appears to have jelled that this was a decent festival, with a few outstanding titles, many good films, and only a few outright duds ("Forever Young," we hardly knew ye).

This year's Cannes Film Festival had a wide range of reactions to its lineup this year with no clear-cut runaway favorite that was the talk of the town on the level of a "Parasite" or "Titane." With this much uncertainty, we expected surprises at at this year’s Cannes Film Festival awards but I don’t know how many people expected to see a certain studio pick up its third Palme d’Or in a row. This year's In Competition included, "Armageddon Time," "Boy From Heaven," "Broker," "Brother and Sister," "Close," "Crimes of the Future," "Decision to Leave," "The Eight Mountains," "EO," "Forever Young," "Holy Spider," "Leila's Brothers," "Mother And Sun," "Nostalgia," "Pacifiction," "R.M.N.," "Showing Up," "The Stars at Noon," "Tchaïkovski's Wife," "Tori and Lokita" & "Triangle of Sadness." The jury selecting the winners for this year's In Competition awards included Asghar Farhadi ("A Hero"), Rebecca Hall ("Passing"), Ladj Ly ("Les Misérables"), Jeff Nichols ("Loving"), Deepika Padukone ("xXx: Return Of Xander Cage"), Noomi Rapace ("Lamb"), Joachim Trier ("The Worst Person In The World"), Jasmine Trinca ("The Best Of Youth"), and Jury President, Vincent Lindon ("Both Sides Of The Blade"). Do you feel the need? The need to listen! For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Cody Dericks, Daniel Howat, Danilo Castro & Will Mavity. Today, we're soaring high in the skies as death-defying megastar Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski finally deliver the sequel to "Top Gun" 36 years later (and after a lot of release delays) with "Top Gun: Maverick." Shooting aerial combat in ways we've never seen before with a story that wears its heart on its sleeve and pays respect to the past while pushing the limits of what's possible for today's cinematic landscape forward, the film is being widely embraced by critics and audiences alike. What did we think of the story, the acting, and the crafts? We discuss all of these topics plus the film's Oscar prospects and where Tom Cruise's career goes from here in our full review below.
