Awards Calendar For November 2016

By Matt Neglia & Will Mavity We are determined to bring you the best experience throughout this year’s Oscar Season. One way we are looking to do that is by keeping you informed as to all of the upcoming dates for awards nominations, announcements and ceremonies. Be on the look out for more dates to come but for now, click down below to see what exciting developments await us throughout the month of November.

November 12th – Academy Governors Awards

This year, the Governors Awards are honoring: Jackie ChanAnne V. CoatesLynn Stalmaster and Frederick Wiseman

November 22nd – Independent Spirit Award Nominations

The Independent Spirit Awards are voted by members of the organization every year looking to celebrate the very best in independent film. Their ceremonies fall traditionally the night before the Oscar ceremony and can serve as a good preview of what to expect the following Sunday night.

November 28th – Gotham Independent Film Awards

The Gotham Awards are our first official awards of the season. Though they are selected by a small committee, it’s still fun to see our first awards contenders emerge from a competitive voting process. It should be noted that a Special Ensemble prize is being given to the cast of “Moonlight.” Links are provided to the reviews of the films highlighted in yellow along with our predictions.

November 28th – Annie Award Nominations

On the same day as the Gotham Awards, the Annie Awards Nominations will be announced to recognize individual achievements within Animation. Since the Oscars don’t recognize voiceover performances or the art direction of animated films, this is less a predictor and more of an industry ceremony to give animated films their due. Previous winners of their top award include: “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Frozen,” “How To Train Your Dragon 2” and last year’s “Inside Out.”

November 29th – National Board of Review Awards

On this day, the race is officially on. The National Board Of Review is typically the first one in a long list of critics groups to announce their awards every year and they can set the table for the rest of the season like they did last year when they surprisingly awarded their Best picture prize to “Mad Max: Fury Road.” They have not gotten their Best Picture winner to match up with the Oscars since “Slumdog Millionaire” back in 2008, Best Director since 2006 when Martin Scorsese won for “The Departed,” Best Actor since 2006 when Forest Whitaker won for “The Last King of Scotland.” At least they got last year’s Best Actress winner right with Brie Larsen for “Room” but regardless, we should take them with a grain of salt. It must be noted that this is the first of our Awards Calendar coverage. Once we hit December, we will be releasing updates every two weeks as the dates and announcements will be coming fast and furious (No pun intended). In the meantime…
