The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "A Hidden Life" Cinematographer, Jörg Widmer12/20/2019
By Matt Neglia
Jörg Widmer has worked with acclaimed director Terrence Malick before. However, "A Hidden Life" marks the first time he is credited as the director of photography for one of his films. Hailed as one of the most visually striking films of 2019, the movie represents a return to stronger narrative filmmaking from Malick. Jörg talks to us about his process of working with the mysterious director, what challenges he faced working on the film, what he wants people to take away from the film, and more! Thank you so much for listening. One of the most common topics among pundits and Film Twitter since last year’s Academy Awards has been the shocking result of the Best Actress race. The vast amount of people predicting Glenn Close to prevail for “The Wife” was astronomical; aside from the few outliers, almost no one was considering Olivia Colman for “The Favourite” in a serious way. Close’s upset was such a shock that it has defined the conversation around the current Best Actress race. Many people have subscribed to this basic reasoning as to why Close lost and Colman won: “The Wife” was only nominated in Best Actress and “The Favourite” was a Best Picture nominee; therefore, more people saw the latter rather than the former, thus voting for what they saw. The argument is also contingent upon, by a film receiving more than one nomination, a certain level of passion from other groups is displayed. Frankly, I have never agreed with this as a write-off of the Best Actress result.

“Hala” is a moving coming-of-age drama from writer/director Minhal Baig, which was screened earlier this year at Sundance and was acquired by Apple TV+. “Hala” is a quiet, reflective piece full of soul and passion, with an outstanding central performance from Geraldine Viswanathan who positively radiates on the big-screen. The film follows Hala as she tries to transition from adolescence to adulthood, attempting to stretch her wings and fly the nest. Hala falls for and starts dating Jesse (Jack Kilmer), but keeps their relationship a secret because of the fact that he’s not Muslim. Her overbearing mother (Purbi Joshi) seems to forever keep a close eye on her, and her father (Azad Khan) seems to be distant and preoccupied with his own secrets. The character of Hala is so refreshing to see. She’s fully developed and complex, with her own desires, wants, and goals, which can backfire. As her relationship with her parents evolves, she goes from being a typical “daddy’s girl,” butting heads with her mother constantly, to a more mature adult who understands that her parents aren’t perfect and have flaws. The relationship between Hala and her mother is reminiscent of the relationship between Lady Bird and her mother in Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” and it will more than likely strike an emotional chord with many viewers. Baig’s fresh and original approach to the coming-of-age story shines through in “Hala” and we were lucky to talk to her about the film.

Since I last wrote about Best Supporting Actress, the race has exploded. I previously suspected this category would crystalize with the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild nominations. However, the trajectory of the race lunged in the opposite direction – Best Supporting Actress is the most fluid acting race of the year. The race has cracked open with more contenders than even I previously expected. There are several ways this could play out based on how certain movies perform in their theatrical rollout, how other movies try to sustain buzz and the test of all tests: If previously hot-ticket films can hold their buzz from the end of the year over the threshold into the new year. This last point is something that’s underrated in awards season analysis. The conversation and the slates of nominees we see in the televised precursor nominations in early December oftentimes drastically change from who we see nominated by the BAFTA awards and the Oscars in the middle of January. In fact, this year it seems like more than ever BAFTA will be influential in helping to set up the buzz on which the Oscars will follow through.

Paul Walter Hauser is an actor who got his start in stand up comedy and television. He's slowly been building his way into the public consciousness these past few years with scene-stealing turns in "I, Tonya," "BlacKkKlansman" and "Late Night." His latest film "Richard Jewell," finds him in the titular leading role as Richard Jewell, a man who saved many innocent lives during the 1996 Olympic bombing but was then later accused by the media to have had carried out the attack himself, which was later disproven. Paul Walter Hauser has endeared himself to the NBP Team through his interactions with us on social media and we were happy to chat with him about his career thus far, his experience working with Clint Eastwood, what he wants people to take away from his latest film, what is next for the young actor and more. Take a listen below. Thank you so much for listening. Recently, Next Best Picture ran a poll to see what was the film community’s favorite documentary of the decade, and the shortlist consisted of some very good documentaries but not every documentary could make the top ten. The top ten list covers a range of topics and subjects from the pressures of celebrity stardom to the mistreatment of animals in captivity. Some documentaries were recognized and awarded by the Academy, and some were painfully ignored. In our recap of the decade we've also conducted polls with the NBP Film Community which resulted in lists for the best black and white, horror, biopic and animated films (Next up is best youth performance). So, without further ado, here’s our rundown of the top ten documentaries as chosen by you.

We're down to crunch time – the Academy has released its shortlist for the newly-named Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film). Films from 93 countries were submitted, but two were disqualified for containing too much English, including Nigeria's "Lionheart." Here are the rules: "Los Angeles-based Academy members from all branches screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and December 10. The group’s top seven choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist. Academy members eligible to participate in the Nominations round of voting will view the shortlisted films. Members must see all ten films before casting their ballots." So here we go. These are the final ten films in competition for Best International Feature Film...

For this week's second podcast review, Cody Dericks, Ryan C. Showers and I talk about the latest Clint Eastwood film titled "Richard Jewell" starring Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Olivia Wilde, Jon Hamm and rising star Paul Walter Hauser in the titular role. Eastwood's politics are a hot topic on conversation amongst our team every time he releases a new movie and this one is no different as we weave through the film's problematic messaging, the filmmaking from the 89 year old director and the performances from the cast. What did we think? Tune in to find out. Thank you so much for listening. Tracy Letts is a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, who has made a name for himself in many different areas of the arts. From the stage, to the big and small screen, Letts has done it all. Now, in 2019 he's re-united with Greta Gerwig for her adaptation of "Little Women" and he also got the chance to work with James Mangold playing Henry Ford II in the box-office hit "Ford v Ferrari."
