"House Of Gucci" has reviews split right down the middle, to say nothing of Oscar pundits who see it making headway with the Academy or just dread it making headway. But with promising holiday box office and splashy potential nominees in Lady Gaga and Jared Leto, it may stick around in some fashion this season, no matter how many aren't happy about it. This brings back memories of 2018 when critically divisive movies made a lot of noise with a far less critical voting body. As it stands, while "House Of Gucci" is seemingly far too divisive and in too big a hole to be the "Green Book" of 2018, it can still very easily be the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of 2021 if it isn't already.

Disney's "Encanto" is the 60th animated feature film from the studio and see's Byron Howard and Jared Bush reunite after their successful collaboration on the Academy Award-winning "Zootopia." With Charise Castro Smith added as a Co-Director and Co-Writer, the team has created a cultural joy that celebrates family, magic, and love. Along with actress Stephanie Beatriz (who voices the film's lead character, Mirabel), the four of them were kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me about their work behind the Disney animated film. Since it was announced that this year's Oscars would feature a set ten in Best Picture following years of the sliding-scale system, there has been much talk over what will round out the nominees. As the festival circuit has wound down and the final contenders are being seen, some films have disappointed or proven to be divisive and less than ideal choices. One film that could benefit from this and rise above is Mike Mills' fourth feature film, "C'mon C'mon." While the film was already highly anticipated, it did not seem at the offset to be A24's biggest Oscar contender. However, following an impressive festival run, it is receiving universal acclaim and love, with some critics calling it their favorite film of the year. It's benefitting from organic, passionate word of mouth from audiences who are also falling in love with it. And how could you not? It is a sweet and heartwarming film that is very easy to love and seems more likely to be a contender in filling out this year's Best Picture lineup. Should A24 secure a nomination for it in Best Picture, then the question becomes: what other nominations could the film receive?

They always say the third time's the charm, but how about the ninth? Or the tenth? Or the eleventh? That's where the rapturously acclaimed Paul Thomas Anderson will find himself at the 94th Academy Awards, as he could very likely contend as a producer, director, and writer, after eight former failed Oscar bids throughout his 25-year career. However, Anderson need not shed a tear about losses from the past, as his latest awards hopeful, "Licorice Pizza," could very well be his golden ticket, especially if the first batch of rave reviews are any indication. Currently standing at a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90 on Metacritic at the time of this writing - "Licorice Pizza" is clearly primed to be one of the top critics' darlings on the awards circuit this season, and such effusive acclaim is sure to catch the Academy's attention as well. Already, the film is being positioned as a frontrunner in the Best Original Screenplay category for Anderson's weird, whimsical, and endlessly witty writing. But what say his chances in Director? Or how about the film's possibilities in Best Picture? Below, we break down Anderson's history in each of the three categories cited above - Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original/Adapted Screenplay - and compare his work to that of the competition he will face at this year's Oscars.

This week, Josh Parham, Danilo Castro & guest Erik Anderson from Awards Watch joined our main podcast review to discuss the second film from Ridley Scott in 2021, "House Of Gucci," starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons & Salma Hayek. The film tells the true story of Patrizia Reggiani and how she married into the Gucci fashion empire and ultimately brought it down. What did we think of the performances, the tone brought to the story by Ridley Scott, the editing, costumes, and screenplay? We discuss all of these points, the film's awards potential, and more in our review down below. Buon appetito! Thank you so much for listening. "The Humans" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now playing in limited release and streaming on Showtime. The film is an adaptation of the stage show of the same name by Tony Award winner Stephen Karam, who is making his feature-length directing debut here. The film utilizes an ensemble of incredible actors and leading them is Academy Award-nominee Richard Jenkins in one of his best performances to date as the patriarch of a family who has gathered in a broken down New York City apartment for Thanksgiving, each of them harboring secrets and challenges which make their way to the surface over the course of a single evening. Richard was kind enough to spend some time discussing his familiarity with the original show, working with the other actors and Karam, and a few thoughts on his upcoming role in "Nightmare Alley." Traditionally, supporting actor performances of note – and award consideration – are meaty roles that border on being co-leads. Looking back on the last several years of Oscar winners, you'll see a long string of these kinds of performances, like Brad Pitt in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," or Mahershala Ali in "Green Book," that feature a significant amount of screen time and a measured performance from the actor inhabiting the part. 2021 may finally buck that trend. In a field with few clear and traditional favorites, smaller, more true supporting roles are raising eyebrows amongst awards pundits. From blockbusters like "Dune" to ensemble pieces like "House of Gucci," actors are proving that you don't need a considerable amount of screentime to pack a punch in your performance. While there are many to choose from, I want to focus on four standout supporting performances from this year, all of whom are household names who have starred in Marvel and DC franchises to boot but are garnering strong notices for their work. Instead of making their mark with leading or weighty supporting roles, these four actors stole the show with significantly smaller parts than they traditionally receive. And all four did so with an unexpected, chaotic level of energy and gusto that stayed with audiences and made us cheer for the deaths of their more traditional leading man personas in hopes that we'll see more layered character actor work from them in the future.

"C'mon C'mon" is the fourth feature film from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mike Mills, and it had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it garnered positive notices for virtually every aspect, including its writing, acting, cinematography, and score. There are a great many reasons why so many become invested in following the Oscar race. Perhaps, part of the appeal is how the journey to Oscar night can sometimes mirror the structure of a movie itself. There's a defined beginning, middle, and end, and different contenders can take on roles straight out of Hollywood. There's usually an underdog, a fan favorite, and of course, a villain. And as the season winds down, the race for Best Picture usually boils down to two films grappling for dominance. Often, these two are very different in terms of content, scale, and purpose. This year, however, it appears that the two films that may be battling for the biggest award of Oscar night may have more in common than is often seen in most years. Those two films are "Belfast" and "King Richard." Of course, it is early in the season, and therefore, everything is still speculation and prognostication. Still, this year's race is shaping up to be unlike the ones we've seen before.

The film is currently streaming on Netflix, and what did we think of it? What did we think of the musical numbers, story, performances, and the film's awards chances? We discuss all of these talking points and more in our review down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. At the beginning of November, "Don't Look Up" and "Being The Ricardos" were at precarious places in the Oscar pecking order, thanks to poorly received trailers and their always controversial writer/directors. Yet, according to pundits and early critics who saw their first screenings in the last week, those questionable early looks were quite deceiving. Now, this sets the stage for both of them to go from potential bombs to the most hotly debated awards season films.

Our "Twilight" marathon continues with the second installment in the franchise, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," directed by Chris Weitz. With the release of "Spencer," we're going back to visit the film franchise that made Kristen Stewart a star along with her co-star Robert Pattinson. This film more prominently features Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner, and introduces many other elements in the franchise which will play an important part in later films. A few days ago, we recorded our live reactions to all five films back to back in a marathon screening which we'll be releasing to all of you in five parts for each movie in the franchise. This week, Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham & Ema Sasic joined our main podcast review to discuss Reinald Marcus Green's latest film, "King Richard," starring Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn & Jon Bernthal. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, where it started the Oscar train for Will Smith in Best Actor and has only continued to build steam ever since in categories such as Best Supporting Actress for Aunjanue Ellis, Best Supporting Actor for Jon Bernthal, and Best Picture. Now that the film is playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max, what did we think of this crowd-pleasing sports drama depicting the rise of the Williams sisters in the world of tennis? What did we think of the performances? And how do we feel about the film's awards chances, especially for Will Smith? We discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Enjoy! "Annette" premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film has confounded audiences with its rock-musical brilliance and mad storytelling from the unique mind of Leos Carax. While a lot of praise was directed towards Carax's vision and Adam Driver's leading performance, we think Simon Helberg deserves some awards consideration for his role as The Accompanist. Simon was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which can be listened to down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The transition from pop star to major serious movie star is a surprisingly difficult transition to make. It's sort of bizarre the difficulty singers have moving into the other medium since for like 35 years or so, much of selling music has involved making videos of the songs. Yet, the list of people who have crashed and burned far outweighs the number of people who've made the transition. Women seem to have an especially hard time for some reason. Gaga burst into the film world with the remake of "A Star is Born" and earned an Oscar nomination for her big-screen debut performance in the Best Actress category and won for Best Original Song. You'd think a smash like that would set you up pretty easily for a future as a screen star but just ask Diana Ross or Bette Midler how quickly that initial blaze of glory can fizzle out. The sophomore slump seems to be something that has thwarted, stalled, or ended many a film career, but Gaga seems poised to clear that hurdle. Unlike other singers who, for whatever reason, ended up in less than stellar second films, Gaga snagged the lead in one of cinema's great directors, Ridley Scott's next film, "House of Gucci." Early reviews of the film have swung widely in each direction, but Gaga has pretty much received praise for her turn in the film. Unlike her previous movie, she has transformed herself into a different character, one not at all close to what seems to be Gaga's own personality. All the vulnerability and star wattage she alternately displayed in "A Star is Born" was excellent, but the role of an aspiring singer was something she'd lived out in her own life. The scheming murderer she plays in Gucci doesn't seem close to Gaga's personality at all (one hopes)! Regardless of the film's success or whether or not she earns a second Oscar nomination as an actress, Gaga seems to have gone out on a limb, and it has worked. You can't really say Gaga is just a singer who got lucky in one film playing herself. She's a serious actress now and seemingly on the verge of doing what few pop stars have done.

Within every Oscar season, a decent amount of time is dedicated to the acting categories. Totaling in 20 nominees, it's the one section of categories at the Oscars which garners the most attention due to the recognizable faces that occupy it each and every year. Therefore, actors make up for most of a film's awards campaign, from film festival premieres, to the various awards shows which lead up to the big night on Oscar Sunday itself. But, as with every category, there are specific biases and unspoken rules about what type of process generates an Oscar win.
