If you have had the feeling that this year’s contest for Best Picture is a bit lackluster, you are not alone. This Best Picture race has led many of us to the same conclusion: Films that would be “on the bubble” to be nominated in other years will likely occupy allotted slots in the Oscar Best Picture lineup. A side effect of the financial hit the entertainment industry has endured due to the global pandemic is that this awards season cycle is less complete than past years. This has made it difficult to separate the race between feasible frontrunners, apathetic horses in the running for a nomination but not a win, and passion projects that are most fantasy than reality in an Academy Awards Best Picture competition. This has left many of us wondering what is to come in the race with no undeniable frontrunner to win thus far. The Next Best Picture Podcast: Episode 222 - Screener Season Begins & The Trailer For "Our Friend"11/29/2020

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! For this week's main review, I am joined by Nicole Ackman, Ryan C. Showers, Daniel Howat, Cody Dericks & Danilo Castro. This week we're discussing Ron Howard's latest film "Hillbilly Elegy" starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close. After receiving a negative reception from critics, what did the NBP team think of it once we saw it on Netflix? We discuss the film's politics (or lack of), performances, writing and more in our analysis of one of the year's most controversial films. We hope you enjoy our discussion. According to Deadline, Protagonist has "closed a raft of international pre-sales" for a variety of foreign markets for the women's rights drama "Call Jane" starring Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mara, and Rupert Friend. "Carol" writer Phyllis Nagy will be directing from a Blacklist script by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi.

"Happiest Season" is obviously tailor-made for a few audience demographics. Between those who love Christmas movies, members and supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community and those arguing for more inclusive storytelling, this story of a lesbian couple keeping their relationship a secret from one’s conservative family during a holiday visit has much buzz and anticipation around it. Yet it is not just apparently tailor-made for those future viewers, but for a good deal of people who’ve watched a fair amount of “Peak TV” these last several years, thanks to the resume of much of its cast and crew.

"Sound Of Metal" is one of the best films of 2020 and we have a treat for you all today. We conducted three separate interviews talking with key people involved in the making of the film. First up is supervising sound editor Nicolas Becker, who takes us into one of the year's best soundscapes. Then we have writer/director Darius Marder who tells us about the screenplay, working with the deaf community and the actors of the film. And then we have someone who is part of both groups, actor Paul Raci who plays Ruben's mentor Joe in the film. All of them have a unique perspective to lend in these fascinating conversations. We hope you enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. It was a shock to movie fans around the world when Chadwick Boseman passed away earlier in the year after a long fight with colon cancer at the age of 43. With his performances in “Da 5 Bloods” and the upcoming “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom,” this should have been his coming out party as far as award races come. But now, it will be his first and only opportunity. If earning an Oscar nomination is difficult for the living, it’s even harder to do once you’ve passed away. Only eight performers in the Academy’s 92-year history have been able to earn a posthumous nomination and only two were able to win. Will Boseman be next?

As per Variety, the new film from Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, "The Mauritanian," is to be released on February 19, 2021. With the Academy's temporary extension of the eligibility window for the upcoming Oscars, "The Mauritanian" is now set to be one of the final films eligible for the 2021 ceremony.

Dustin O'Halloran & Volker Bertelmann were in high demand following their Oscar nomination for their work on the 2016 film "Lion." The two would go off to do their own projects while occasionally re-teaming for another film score now and then. Dustin O'Halloran would go on to work with Francis Lee on "God's Own Country," and now he's back with Volker to work with Francis Lee again on his latest film "Ammonite." The two composer were kind enough to talk to us about what it was like working with Francis Lee, what he was looking for in the score for "Ammonite" and how Dustin and Volker approached the project. Now that nearly all of the major Oscar contenders have been screened in some capacity, the predicted nominees in the acting categories are beginning to solidify. And Best Actor is quickly becoming the most exciting race of the year. There are plenty of contenders, but it’s beginning to look increasingly likely that it will be a showdown between two acting titans: Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Anthony Hopkins for “The Father.” Both men have several key factors that benefit them in different ways when it comes to securing the Oscar win. It also doesn’t hurt that they are delivering fantastic, career-topping performances.

Angelina Jolie is stepping back into the director’s chair. According to Entertainment Weekly, she will direct the upcoming drama “Unreasonable Behavior,” which is based on the life of British war photographer Don McCullin. Tom Hardy and Dean Baker will produce the film through their production company Hardy Son & Baker.

Every awards season, a lot of attention is devoted to the Best Actress category. It is usually overcrowded and populated with legends, movie stars, and newcomers fighting for those five spots. More times than not, there is a competition for that fifth spot or for the gold. And more times than not, that competition features "the ingénue."
