For our main podcast review this weekend, Cody Dericks and Danilo Castro join me to discuss the middle chapter of David Gordon Green's vision for "Halloween," with the sequel to the 2018 film (also called "Halloween"), "Halloween Kills." Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton & Anthony Michael Hall, the film continues the story from the last movie throughout a single Halloween night 40 years after the events of the original 1978 film with a larger body count from Michael Myers and a frenzied town of traumatized victims ready to take him out. Will evil die tonight? What did we think? Tune in below and listen to our SPOILER-FILLED review to find out. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. Ridley Scott has had an idiosyncratic career, to say the least. In terms of work ethic and range, he's a throwback to the directors of classic Hollywood. Few people could muster the energy to release two massive dramas ("The Last Duel" and "House of Gucci") in one year, let alone do so at the age of 83. Of course, Scott is anything but old-fashioned when it comes to artistry. The director has repeatedly broken down genre barriers and shown what could be possible when one is unafraid to play with form and aesthetics. Film noir, science fiction, horror, and historical epics have all been filtered through Scott's exacting lens and been all the better for it. Scott's prolific output has resulted in a fair share of duds ("1492: Conquest of Paradise" & "A Good Year" among them), but we wanted to focus on the instances in which he put it all together. So, with "The Last Duel" galloping into theaters, we decided to take our swords and carve out a list of the ten best Ridley Scott films. Admittedly, I have not seen "The Last Duel" yet, so this list of ten will not contain his latest effort.

There's a chill in the air, the leaves are drifting from their wooden homes, and candy is on sale and prominently displayed at every grocery store. It's finally the seasonally appropriate time to watch the "Halloween" series. This is unquestionably my favorite scary movie franchise, and it's certainly been a roller coaster trying to keep up with it over the years. Even in a reboot and remake-heavy genre like horror, this series has chopped up and remixed its own mythology a frightening number of times. In honor of the release of "Halloween Kills," let's look at the many entries in this storied film series and see how they rank against each other.

Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Edward Lachman has been working with director Todd Haynes for decades. Their collaboration has given us many terrific films over the years but never a documentary. That has now changed with the release of "The Velvet Underground," now streaming on Apple TV+. Ed Lachman was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, his relationship with Todd Haynes, growing up during the era in which the documentary covers, and more! Daniel Craig's time as James Bond has ended with the release of "No Time To Die." To pay tribute to the 15 years he gave us as this iconic character, we decided to go back to his first portrayal of 007 in 2006 with "Casino Royale." Serving as a reboot for the franchise, which was desperately in need of one at the time, the film also stars Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright, and Judi Dench, with Martin Campbell returning to direct after successfully rebooting the franchise with "GoldenEye" a few years prior. How does the movie hold up all of these years later? What did we think of the action set pieces, Craig's performance, and the film's unjust awards season run, which resulted in zero Oscar nominations? We discuss all of these points and more in our review. Joining me for this throwback podcast review, I have Josh Parham, Casey Lee Clark & Dan Bayer. Enjoy! Fran Kranz's extraordinary directorial debut, "Mass," contains four of the most incredible performances you're likely to see this year, maybe even ever. The Next Best Picture team was fortunate and honored to talk with all of them about this very special film, including Fran Kranz himself. First up, we have my interview with Ann Dowd, followed by Will Mavity's interview with Reed Birney, then we have my interview with Jason Isaacs, followed by Daniel Howat's interview with Martha Plimpton, and then finally, we end it all with my interview with the director and writer, Fran Kranz. If you have not seen the film yet, we recommend you do so before listening as we discuss heavy spoilers. You can check out the latest release schedule from Bleecker Street here. Enjoy! During May 2018, as I was scanning Cannes reviews for Pawel Pawlikowski's "Cold War," and knowing Alfonso Cuaron's black & white "Roma" was due out later the same year, I tweeted, "It just occurred to me that with Roma and Cold War, 2018 could be the first Oscar lineup with multiple black-and-white Cinematography nominees since the 1960s." At the time, the idea seemed like a long shot. And even if it happened, I figured it would just be a fun little bit of Oscar trivia, not indications of a trend. But then they both were, in fact, nominated, making the first Oscar cinematography lineup with multiple black & white nominees since the Academy stopped separating cinematography awards into distinct black-and-white and color categories. And of course, they dominated the cinematography awards that season with "Cold War" winning the ASC and "Roma" taking the Oscar.

For our second podcast review this week, Nicole Ackman, Will Mavity, Zoe Rose Bryant & Tom O'Brien joins me to discuss the directorial debut of Fran Kranz titled "Mass," starring Jason Isaacs, Ann Dowd, Martha Plimpton & Reed Birney. With four of the best performances you'll ever see and unbelievable writing, it's an emotional gut-punch unlike any other out there. The team and I came together to discuss how Kranz handles the sensitive subject material, the characters and the performances by the actors, the awards potential for it, and more! It's a very in-depth, spoiler-filled conversation, so please, we highly urge you to check out the movie first before listening. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The 2021 New York Film Festival came roaring back after last year's virtual festival, which had a hybrid of in-person and at-home digital screenings. The slate was bigger than ever before with films coming from Berlin, Venice, Cannes, and TIFF, along with an exclusive World Premiere of Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth," which served as the Opening Night film. In many ways, the 59th annual New York Film Festival felt like a "Best Of" film festival. The overall experience through the course of the fifteen-day festival (longer if you count press screening days) was eventful and tremendously rewarding. Q&As were held, special events took place, interviews were conducted. You could feel the energy in the air outside of Alice Tully Hall all along the streets of the city. Cinema was back and stronger than ever. With all attendees required to wear masks at all events and screenings, plus being fully vaccinated, it was another example of how the film community could come together to celebrate the art form we all love this film festival season safely. In total, I've seen 30 films from this year's lineup (some from other festivals as repeat watches and some as first-time watches) with notable misses being "France," "Futura," "Hit the Road," "Il Buco," "In Front of Your Face," "Introduction," "Jane by Charlotte," "Marx Can Wait," "Neptune Frost" and "The First 54 Years: An Abbreviated Manual for Military Occupation." Click below to see my ranking of all of the NYFF59 films I saw this year. The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "No Time To Die" Cinematographer, Linus Sandgren10/11/2021
By Matt Neglia
Coming off of an Academy Award win for "La La Land," Swedish cinematographer Linus Sandgren is one of the most in-demand DPs working in Hollywood today. His most prominent film to date is his latest, a James Bond film and his first collaboration with director Cary Joji Fukunaga on "No Time To Die." Linus was kind enough to talk about his approach to the film, respecting other films in the franchise, what it was like working with Cary, and more! Be sure to take a listen down below and see the film on the biggest screen you can find in theaters to take in Linus's excellent work fully. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. For our main podcast review this weekend, Josh Parham, Daniel Howat, and Michael Schwartz join me to discuss the final James Bond film starring Daniel Craig, "No Time To Die," directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and also starring Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz & Ralph Fiennes. Having to serve as a finale for Craig while tying up loose ends from the other films during his tenure as 007, Fukunaga's entry is the biggest film the franchise has ever seen, clocking in at nearly three hours long. After numerous delays, was the wait worth it? How does it work as an ending? What did we think of the action set pieces, Malek's Bond villain, and more? Tune in below to find out what we thought of these topics plus the film's awards potential! Be aware; we discuss spoilers after the initial review is over! Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi were hot off of their Best Documentary Oscar win for "Free Solo" when the real-life story of "The Rescue" occurred. Using archival footage from the daring 2018 mission, new interviews, and thrilling reenactments using the actual cave divers involved in the rescue, Jimmy and Elizabeth have once again created one of the most intense and inspirational documentaries of the year. The two of them were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film, which is now playing in theaters from National Geographic Documentary Films. The James Bond film series revolves around traditions - the gun barrel opening, the fancy cars, the one-and-done leading actresses, the martinis, and, most notably, the theme songs. Listening to all of the Bond songs in order is a great way to chart the course of popular music over the last half-century. And while they reflect trends from the time of their release, Bond songs still maintain a specific, classic sound in one way or another that links them all together. Just in time for the latest 007 adventure, "No Time to Die," let's take a look at the astounding number of theme tunes this series has given us and see how they stack up against each other.

It feels like it's been quite a few years since we've had a real "competition" in the Best Original Song category at the Oscars. Sure, last season, we had a different winner at almost every televised ceremony ("Io sì (Seen)" at the Golden Globes, "Speak Now" at the Critics Choice Awards, "Fight for You" at the Academy Awards, etc.) but that was primarily due to a lack of passion for one contender rather than conflict caused by two or three titans going head-to-head-to-head. Before that, songs like "City of Stars," "Shallow," and "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" sailed through the season practically unopposed.

In a particular context, the prospective field for Best Picture looks pretty crowded, with early festival breakouts like "Belfast," "The Power of the Dog," "King Richard," "Spencer," "Dune," and "The Tragedy of Macbeth" and projected fall contenders like "West Side Story," "Licorice Pizza," "Nightmare Alley," "House of Gucci," and "Don't Look Up." With a field of ten, this lineup would be more than enough to fill it out – assuming this will be the lineup by the end. In truth, the odds are good that at least one or two of the big five fall mystery films will flop out of awards season and that at least one or two of the six early festival favorites will not have the legs or support for the long run. Yet, at this early stage of awards season, these eleven movies are far and away ahead of the rest of the field, to the point where no other film is on more than two Best Picture ballots among Next Best Picture's team of prognosticators. |
