Under-appreciated Horror Films To Watch This Halloween: “Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers”10/31/2020
By Cody Dericks
In honor of Halloween, I’ll be exploring five underappreciated horror films throughout the month of October. This week, I’m making the case for why you should watch the fifth installment in the legendary horror franchise, “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.” Check out my previous articles on “Lake Mungo,” “The Village," "Hell House LLC" & "Doctor Sleep."

An effective horror film won’t simply just use jump scares, gory special effects and men in monster costumes to scare the living daylights out of us. In order to leave the viewer with nightmares, a filmmaker will need to utilize every aspect of the mise-en-scene, from the cinematography to the performances from the actors. We can all agree that film is indeed a visual medium, but it’s important not to overlook the importance of sound and music in filmmaking, especially when it comes to the horror genre. Some of cinema’s most iconic scores belong to horror, whether it be Bernard Herrmann’s shirking violins from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” (1960) or John Carpenter’s score for “Halloween” (1978).

Body horror is a form of cinema that picks at the base of all human fears: physicality. Every living person shudders at the thought of catching an illness, losing mobility, or feeling body parts shut down. These experiences are more disturbing than a serial killer with a hacksaw because they are inescapable. We can never outrun the decomposition of our own mortal form. These primal fears have been exacerbated by COVID-19. We have never been as keenly aware of our health and the health of others as we are in 2020, which makes the recent body horror flick, “Possessor,” all the more upsetting. Brandon Cronenberg’s sophomore film coincides with the Halloween season, so we decided to put our hazmat suits on and revisit the body horror titles that have left the biggest impression (and the worst scars). Here are the 10 best body horror films of all time!

The Oscars (and Golden Globes) have a problem. The big problem currently plaguing the Academy is that their votes for what they consider "the best" are becoming increasingly unoriginal with each passing year. How many times last year did you groan when you heard the same movies being called for nearly every category? No one is saying those films aren’t great or deserve several nominations, but I don’t even think Sam Mendes believes that “1917” deserved a nomination for Best Original Screenplay over “The Farewell” for example. This problem mostly stems from two areas of concern. First, Academy voters lack the motivation to watch something that wasn’t produced within mainstream Hollywood. The second reason is that smaller distributors don’t have the capacity, or just aren’t willing to pony up the cash for an awards campaign. While we can’t completely solve the first problem (that’s something that needs to be dealt with internally), we can try to solve the problem of smaller films not being heard. When distributors can’t or won't mount the campaigns their films deserve, it’s up to us to get the word out.

This fall features Tom Hanks in a movie about a man reduced to delivering news reports all across a divided America as he tries to rebuild his life. However, his life is truly changed when his path crosses with a very young girl who doesn’t speak much English and has been raised by a foreign culture considered backward by most of the United States. Yet traveling across the nation with a reluctant older guardian gives her a new spark of life, even as their cross-country journey is meant to end with the man dropping her off in a new home...And now that "Borat Subsequent Movie Film" has made Hanks a small part of that story, he is set to headline his own version of it in "News of the World" later this winter as well.

For this week's second review, I am joined by Nicole Ackman, Daniel Howat & Rebecca Daniel. Together, we are discussing the latest film from Netflix, "Over The Moon" starring Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong and more! One of Netflix's animated contenders this year for awards season, they've been highlighting the songs and the Asian cast with a story that focuses on Chinese culture and mythology. What do we think of the film though? Tune in to find out. Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. The ongoing global pandemic has once again forced films to shuffle their release dates. As per The Wrap, MGM has moved the Jennifer Hudson-starring Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect" from its previous release date of January 15, 2021 to August 13, 2021. This is the film's second release date push, as it was originally scheduled for October 9, 2020.

Although every Oscar season, animated films, documentary films, and non-English language films represent some of the year’s best filmmaking, traditionally, when it comes to the Oscars, those films are relegated exclusively to nominations in their “designated” Animated/Documentary/International film categories. Typically their “For Your Consideration” ads will list additional categories for which they are eligible for. And occasionally, voters will take notice. On occasion, a documentary will land an editing nomination like “Hoop Dreams” or “Woodstock.” Animated films will break into screenplay and sound categories on occasion. And non-English language films occasionally land nominations across the board. And all three categories of films have factored into the Oscar music races. But the examples of Documentary, Animated, and non-English language films to break into these other categories are very much the exception, not the norm. Still, if last year’s historic Best Picture win for “Parasite” was any indication, voters are gradually becoming more open-minded towards considering these sorts of films in categories across the board.

Netflix has released the trailer for “The Midnight Sky” starring George Clooney, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir & Tiffany Boone. The film is set to be released December 23rd 2020. Click below to see the trailer.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” is taking a tactical approach when it comes to the upcoming Oscars. Sources close to the film have stated that each member of the cast will compete in the Best Supporting Actor category, instead of divvying up the performances between lead and supporting. The Hollywood Reporter claimed that seven cast members will be pushed for the Best Supporting Actor category; including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Micheal Keaton, Sacha Baron Cohen, Frank Langella, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance and Jeremy Strong.

According to Deadline, Adam Sandler has signed on to star in an untitled drama based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel "The Spaceman Of Bohemia" for Netflix. Emmy-winning Johan Renck ("Chernobyl") is set to direct, with a script adapted by Colby Day.

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced the nominees for the fifth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards (CCDA). "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution," "Gunda" and "Mr. SOUL!" lead this year’s nominations with five each. The winners will be revealed in a Special Announcement on Monday, November 16, 2020. Click below to see the nominees.

Every time Michelle Pfeiffer stars in a new project, it is fair to say that, collectively, most of Film Twitter and ‘90s nostalgia fans place the hope that this will be the one, the film that finally carries her to an Oscar win. Pfeiffer has been nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress for “Dangerous Liaisons,” and Best Actress for “The Fabulous Baker Boys” and “Love Field.” For one of the greatest movie stars of the past forty years, there is something unfulfilling about Pfeiffer not receiving the ultimate recognition from the Academy. Pfeiffer consistently brings a world of emotional range and cinematic gravitas to every role she takes on. There are several films in which she should have been nominated and was not, like her iconic performance as Catwoman in “Batman Returns,” her dignified turn in “The Age of Innocence,” and her thunderstorm portrayal in “White Oleander,” which I find to be her career-best work.

For this week's main review, I am joined by Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Sara Clements & Danilo Castro. Together, we are discussing the latest film from Netflix, Ben Wheatley's 2020 version of "Rebecca" starring Lily James, Armie Hammer and Kirstin Scott Thomas. The film is being heavily compared to the Best Picture winning 1940 film by Alfred Hitchcock since the two are based on the same novel by Daphne du Maurier, so how does the updated adaptation hold up? Listen in a s we discuss the costumes, production design, score, performances and more! Thank you so much for listening. Our 2016 retrospective continues as we attempt to cover a few missing podcast reviews which we did not complete the year the site launched. This will culminate in NBP Film Community Awards and awards voted on by the staff towards the end of October. Next up is our review of "The Handmaiden" written and directed by Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy"). One of the most acclaimed films of 2016 and unjustly overlooked to be South Korea's Oscar submission for the Best International Feature Film category that year, the film has endured to become a modern classic in the eyes of many cinephiles. Do we agree? Joining me to discuss I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Patreon guest Jay Ledbetter. Take a listen below and let us know what you think. Also check out our previous 2016 reviews of "20th Century Women," "Paterson," "Captain Fantastic" & "Hail, Caesar!" Thanks! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For a few years now, Netflix has been at the forefront of the Golden Age of television. Starting with “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” in 2013, the streaming service has been relying on niche audiences, resulting in stories that might not have been on television otherwise. From the British drama “The Crown” to the science-fiction ‘80s-inspired “Stranger Things” and the absurd comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Netflix has allowed artists to tell the stories they’ve wanted to tell that might not have fit the network mold. Luckily, this has rewarded Netflix with hundreds of thousands of views and multiple Emmys. Some of these shows are destined for greatness and critical acclaim, but others are surprises. |
