The movie musical has had quite a year in 2021, but no other is as joyous and free-spirited as "Everybody's Talking About Jamie," currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Director Jonathan Butterell brought the show from the stage to the screen and cast a wide array of gifted actors to tell the story of Jamie New/Mimi Me, brought to wondrous life by Max Harwood. Both Jonathan and Max were kind enough to speak with us about making the film, but that's not all...returning to the podcast is Academy Award nominee Richard E. Grant who has a scene-stealing turn as Jamie's mentor Hugo Battersby/Loco Chanelle. Please take a listen down below to hear from all three of them, and be sure to check out the film. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. I was fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a "member preview" of the Academy Museum today before it opens to the public this Thursday, September 30th. I became a member of the Academy Museum early on in their fundraising efforts --- in my email archives, I've got an upbeat "Happy New Year 2015!" message that says, "We have raised $230 million of our $300 million goal, and we plan to enter construction in June of 2015. We are on track to open the Academy Museum in 2017." As we know now, delays happened, a global pandemic occurred, and the Museum is now ready to open this week.

The New York Film Festival premiere of "The Tragedy of Macbeth" not only confirmed it would be in the awards season conversation, but last year's Best Actress winner, Frances McDormand, may once again be there as well. Yet if she is placed in the Supporting Actress category, she will merely be one of nearly a dozen who have already made a big case to squeeze into the field of five – which is more than what can be said about the other supporting field so far.

Another contender has entered the Oscar race. On September 16th, the trailer for Guillermo del Toro's highly anticipated "Nightmare Alley" was released, furthering speculation about this year's highly competitive award's season. This being del Toro's first feature as a director since the Academy Award Best Picture/Best Director winning "The Shape of Water," the film is an adaptation of the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, which was previously turned into a film noir directed by Edmund Goulding.

For our second podcast review this week, Dan Bayer, Sara Clements, Will Mavity & Zach Gilbert joins me to discuss the American remake of the 2018 Danish film "The Guilty," also titled "The Guilty" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. With a script by "True Detective" writer Nic Pizzolatto and Jake re-teaming with "Southpaw" director Antoine Fuqua, the collaboration gives us a taut thriller, confined to a single location for the entire runtime. How did we feel it compared to the original? What did we think of Jake's performance? Tune in below to hear our thoughts, enjoy and be sure to check out the film streaming on Netflix this weekend. Last night, the Tony Awards returned after being pushed off last year due to the pandemic. The nominees were still the same (and in some categories, there were fewer than usual). Still, last night was more of a celebration as many within the theatre community proudly proclaimed "Broadway Is Back" with many extravagant musical numbers, inspiring speeches, and celebrating the art form many love and hold dear to their hearts. To say it was a memorable and special evening is an understatement. The Next Best Theatre team will be returning soon with a podcast to discuss their thoughts on the evening but until then, click below to see last night's complete list of winners! The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" Actress, Cherry Jones9/27/2021
By Matt Neglia
Cherry Jones is one of the most distinguished actresses working today. A Tony and Emmy Award winner, she's graced the screen, stage, and our television sets with brilliant performances over her entire career. Her latest role is in "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye," where she plays Tammy's mother, Rachel. A religiously devoted woman, she has to deal with backlash within her community due to being divorced, making for a complex character to portray on screen and one with whom Cherry can relate in more ways than one. Cherry was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her role, her thoughts on the real-life Tammy Faye and her husband Jim Bakker, working with Jessica Chastain, and more! Click below to listen, and be sure to check out the film now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. To help get us ready for "Dear Evan Hansen," we're traveling back to high school in 2012 with director/writer Stephen Chbosky's beloved adaptation of his novel, "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson & Ezra Miller. What did it feel like for us to revisit these characters and this time in our lives? What did we think of Chbosky's writing and directing? How did we feel about the performances? And do we accept the love we think we deserve? We answer all of this and more in our review down below. Joining me for this podcast review, I have Nicole Ackman, Lauren LaMagna, and Casey Lee Clark. Enjoy! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. After a long delay, we’re thrilled to share our predictions for the 74th Tony Awards ahead of the show on Sunday. It’s been a long time since many of these shows were on Broadway, and some will return, while others won’t. These Tony Awards might be very late, but it’s exciting to be able to celebrate theatre as Broadway is beginning to reopen. Have a listen and hear what myself, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark, Lauren LaMagna, and Michael Schwartz are predicting to win. Thank you so much for listening. Yes, I am aware that it is September, and some would consider it "too early" to discuss this topic, but after the Venice, Telluride, and Toronto Film Festivals, Oscar pundits finally got to see some of the anticipated films of the season. This means we finally know some of these films are legitimate Oscar contenders. After the last few weeks, it is apparent that we may possibly have a major race in one of the top categories: Best Actress, between former Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain for "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" and seeking her first nomination, Kristen Stewart for "Spencer."

For our second podcast review this week, Josh Parham joins me to discuss the newest film from Clint Eastwood, "Cry Macho." At the age of 91, Eastwood is still starring in front of the camera and making movies for us from behind the camera. How does his latest film hold up in his filmography? Could it be the last time we see him on screen? We discuss his legacy, his performance, his direction, and more in our review down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The last two years yielded unconventional Best Picture winners in "Parasite" and "Nomadland"; the two most unconventional back-to-back winners since "Moonlight" and "The Shape of Water" in 2016 and 2017. But as many will remember, whether they'd like to or not, the Academy snapped right back into conventional thinking in 2018 by getting behind "Green Book," in a formula that might well repeat itself in 2021. "Green Book" began its contentious march to Best Picture with a surprise Audience Award win at the Toronto International Film Festival. In contrast, "Belfast" was a near-unanimous pick to win the 2021 Audience Award before TIFF ever opened, and the experts turned out right to pick it. As such, while "Belfast" may not have been the most acclaimed movie at TIFF, it is clearly the first frontrunner of the season.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of "The Fisher King," which is perhaps one of Terry Gilliam's most intimate and personal films. Gilliam's films all shared a unique commonality in terms of their themes and focus. In many of his pictures, the main character seems lost and isolated in the broader world that they find themselves in, and more often than not, they find themselves escaping into a fantasy world to live out their wildest dreams. Characters in Gilliam's films are often obsessive, depressed, and eccentric. As a result, Gilliam's films aren't always the most accessible to a general audience. However, if there's one of his films that I urge you to see, it's "The Fisher King."
