The upcoming fall 2020 movie season will certainly be one for the books. In this current era of social distancing, access to entertainment has taken a drastic turn. Yet even as theatres remain closed in major regions across the country, we still have films to look forward to. Whether the viewing format is at home or in a theatre sometime in the distant future, the films will remain in the same condition they were filmed pre-pandemic. One of the notable highlights of the upcoming season is how many stage to screen adaptations we have on the horizon. From Tony-award winning musicals to small regional plays, there is a film to fill the niche of every theatre lover. There may even be potential to encourage some film fans to partake in the magic of live theatre post-pandemic. Let’s take a look at what titles have made the leap this season.

I’m taking you television fans through how to methodically make your Emmy predictions and win your pool. Previously we looked at Outstanding Comedy, Drama, Limited Series/TV Movie Writing and Directing & Casting. Next up is Outstanding Drama Guest Actor and Actress. Five years ago, the Emmys moved to a plurality vote replacing the more level playing field of 80-100 person panels. Since we spend more time watching television than a film, it’s easier to let our personal preferences affect our predictions as we try to manifest a win for our favorites. The acting categories are where stats can only take you so far – instinct and buzz also matter. Let’s take a look at how to predict the winners for Outstanding Drama Guest Actor and Actress based on recent trends.

Netflix today released the first photos for their upcoming Oscar contender "Mank," directed by David Fincher, his first feature film for the streaming studio (after previously helming television shows "House Of Cards" & "Mindhunter") and his first feature film since 2014's "Gone Girl." The screenplay was written by Fincher's father Jack Fincher before his death in 2003. Click below to see the images.

For this week's main review, I am joined by Ryan C. Showers, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks & guest Kevin Lee. Together, we are discussing the 2020 Disney live-action remake of "Mulan" (1998) also titled "Mulan." The film was supposed to come out earlier this spring but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and has now been made available on Disney+ for $29.99. We discuss the differences between the animated original and this new version, the crafts, the story and more! Take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. Hong Khaou’s debut feature film, "Lilting" (2014), is an intimate, micro-budget drama that follows the story of Richard (Ben Whishaw) who, while still mourning the loss of his boyfriend Kai (Andrew Leung), takes it upon himself to create a relationship with Kai’s mother Junn (Cheng Pei-Pei), who is isolated in a care home now that her primary translator has died. The film’s narrative is driven by language differences and the complex issues of translation between two groups that cannot, but desperately want and need to, understand each other.

Election season is well underway. Every day there are new polls and headlines. As we move closer to the election, we can guarantee we will see dozens of articles about “the best political movies of all time.” There is no shortage of impressive films involving politics. They range from the awful (“The Campaign”) to the bland (“Swing Vote”) to the stone-cold classics. The question is, how does Oscar feel about movies involving American politics?

Just days after filming on "The Batman" resumed, the production has been shut down once again after it was revealed that star Robert Pattinson has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Vanity Fair.

Practically every element of David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” is of the highest cinematic quality. The formal elements are as perfectly carved out and aesthetically realized as possible; Fincher’s direction provides a crisp and thrilling vantage point for the beloved text and has one of the greatest film cast ensembles of the century. Rosamund Pike’s sensational breakthrough performance as Amy Dunne should have catapulted her into the career of someone like Marion Cotillard or Olivia Colman after their Oscar wins. But most of all, Gillian Flynn’s screenplay left such a mark on the screenwriting landscape with the adaptation of her own book in “Gone Girl,” and it’s an accomplishment that no adapted screenplay has lived up to since.

The first teaser trailer for Julie Taymor's "The Glorias" has appeared online. It stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Keira Armstrong and more as it traces Steinem’s influential journey to prominence—from her time in India as a young woman, to the founding of Ms. magazine in New York, to her role in the rise of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s, to the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference and beyond. It's finally here. After months of delays and anticipation, the newest Christopher Nolan film is here for (most) people to see in the cinema on the largest screen possible with a sound system so loud, it threatens to drown out all of the dialogue! Let the discourse begin! This is our review of "Tenet" starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki & Kenneth Branagh. For this review, I am joined by Ryan C. Showers, Daniel Howat and Cody Dericks. We discuss the film's intricate (and sometimes highly confusing) screenplay, Nolan's large-scale ambition, the time-inverted visual effects, the performances and more! Disagree with our takes? Well, in the words of Christopher Nolan...Try not to understand them. Feel them. Thank you so much for listening. I’m going to take you television fans through how to methodically make your Emmy predictions and win your pool. Previously we looked at Outstanding Comedy, Drama & Limited Series/TV Movie Writing and Directing. Next up, the most important category not on the main telecast: casting. Five years ago, the Emmys moved to a plurality vote replacing the more level playing field of 80-100 person panels. No category has had more of a transformation than the casting categories. The winners used to typically come from first-year shows, which makes sense since they’re casting a series that could potentially go multiple seasons and the voters were casting directors. But then the television academy changed the rules allowing directors and producers as well as casting directors to vote. If you win, your series chances of winning increase; lose, and you better hope it’s an anomaly.

2020 has been a year of mediocre but creative biopics of important scientists with first “Radioactive” and now “Tesla.” The release of Michael Almereyda’s “Tesla” this month marks the first time that a narrative feature film about the inventor has ever been made. But Nikola Tesla has been featured in a handful of films before including the much loved “The Prestige” and last year’s “The Current War.” While Tesla was often ignored in favor of Edison, both in his lifetime and after his death, and isn’t a historic figure typically covered in school, there are avid Tesla fans who have ensured that he is a part of popular culture.

As reported by Deadline, Adam Driver will star in Sony’s science fiction thriller “65.” The film will be written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo who wrote the screenplay for “A Quiet Place.” Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man”) and Zainab Azizi will produce under Raimi Productions.

On the latest episode of Next Best Theatre, we discuss stage musical adaptations of films like “Hairspray,” “Beetlejuice,” and “The Producers.” These screen to stage adaptations have been popular for many years and often seem to dominate Broadway. We share our favorites, the ones we think didn’t work, and even discuss the musicals that we prefer to their original movies. Joining me for the episode are Michael Schwartz, Dan Bayer,Casey Lee Clark, Cody Dericks & Lauren LaMagna. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For the small price of $1 a month, you can receive this review along with other exclusive podcast content, so be sure to subscribe here. Thank you so much for listening. When Hazel Baird proposed the idea of an abstract visual concept to her team at Elastic for the title sequence of Apple TV+’s hit drama, "The Morning Show," they knew she’d landed it. Baird and her team were tasked with developing the first visual touchpoint for a show that would be tackling weighty themes. The challenge was to set viewers up emotionally while being careful not to reveal too much.
