Moviegoers will be treated to “Sylvie’s Love” this Christmas. The romantic drama starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha has secured a December 25th release date on Amazon Prime. “Sylvie’s Love” was acquired by the streaming platform after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and it currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Walt Disney Studios has tapped Oscar winner Barry Jenkins ("Moonlight" & "If Beale Street Could Talk") to direct a follow up to their 2019 film "The Lion King," per Deadline. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the previous installment, has written an initial draft of the script. The film will showcase the photo-realistic technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film as well as 2016's Oscar-winning "The Jungle Book." There is currently no release date set nor any word on when production will begin.

On September 30th, “The Boys In The Band” will premiere on Netflix. The latest Ryan Murphy production stars Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells as well as the rest of the entire 2018 Broadway company. The story follows a group of gay men who attend their friend’s birthday party where things go wrong as the night progresses. What makes this film unique from other stage-to-screen adaptations, is not just the subject matter of the piece, but the fact that the entire Broadway cast is translating their production on screen.

Netflix has offered the first look at George Clooney's new Sci Fi, "The Midnight Sky." As per Vanity Fair, the film revolves around dying scientist, played by Clooney (who is also directing the film) as one of the last survivors on a devastated Earth, attempting to prevent a group of astronauts (played by Felicity Jones, David Oleyowo, Tiffany Boone, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir) from returning from a trip from a habitable planet to certain death back on earth.

As per Deadline, Apple has acquired the Russo Brothers' ("Avengers: Endgame") new drama, "Cherry" starring Tom Holland. The film reportedly sold to Apple for more than $40 million, and Apple is planning an awards season push with Holland's performance being described as a "revelation."

I mentioned in my reaction to Steve McQueen's "Lovers Rock" that if the same level of quality and empathy were shown in the other installments of his "Small Axe" Anthology that we would be heading for a revolutionary work of art that very well could stand as the already herald filmmaker's masterwork. Well, I am happy to report that the streak continues at this year's New York Film Festival with the premiere of "Mangrove." Clocking in at 126 minutes, this feature-length film (compared to "Lovers Rock's" 68-minute runtime) is a vital offering from McQueen that will inevitably suffer comparisons to a very similar type of movie being released this awards season, "The Trial Of The Chicago 7." However, in terms of narrative coherence, staying power, and its far more urgent call for Black justice, I would argue that this "trial" is the better of the two and one wholly worth checking out when it lands on Amazon Prime on November 20th.

A soundtrack can make or break any film. From big-budget Hollywood movies to independent film productions, the video aspect of any film can only be as effective and impactful as the audio aspect allows it to be. While there are many film soundtracks that have been rightly recognized for marrying these two key aspects of cinema, there are many more that have been underrated or totally ignored. So, here are five of the most brilliant and underrated film soundtracks of the current century.

Though it should come with little shock at this point, Disney has announced a slew of new release dates for many of their upcoming films. “Black Widow,” “Death on the Nile,” and “West Side Story” all moved from their upcoming 2020 releases into 2021, sending ripple effects through their 2021 slate. This is further bad news for theaters, who have had little success in reopening this fall. The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "Misbehaviour" Director, Philippa Lowthorpe9/23/2020

Carey Mulligan has joined the cast of Bradley Cooper’s upcoming Netflix biopic, “Maestro.” The Oscar nominee will play Felicia Montealegre, the wife of the famous composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Cooper ("A Star is Born") will co-star as Bernstein, in addition to directing and co-writing the film with Josh Singer.

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was unlike any other award show in history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that rendered the production of the entertainment immobile for months, there was no red carpet, nor was there was a massive audience filled with nominees waiting for their names to be called to the stage. The Television Academy went to great lengths to accommodate these safety restrictions while maintaining the integrity and entertainment value of the show. There was an ample amount of social distancing among the presenters and an elaborate virtual set-up for the nominees watching and literally accepting trophies from their homes.

"Welcome to the Pandemmys" said host Jimmy Kimmel as he welcomed us to the most interesting award show we have ever seen. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are behind us and as expected the top three big shows, "Succession," "Schitt's Creek" and "Watchmen" all walked away with the top prizes on the night. But there were still surprises to be had. There were still memorable moments. Stats were broken. Technical glitches were had. Here to join me to talk about everything that went down, capping off an unforgettable year of television I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz & Tom O'Brien. Thank you so much for listening. As per their Twitter, the Toronto International Film Festival has announced that the winner of the People's Choice Award for the 2020 festival is Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland." The first runner-up is Regina King's "One Night in Miami" and the second runner-up is Tracey Deer's "Beans." This marks the first time that all three films recognized by the People's Choice Award come from female directors since the festival began announcing the award's runners-up.

For Episode 212, I am joined by Dan Bayer, Josh Parham & Cody Dericks. Now the end is near and so we face our final curtain. The Creative Arts Emmys have been awarded and now, it’s time to predict the big ones: Outstanding Comedy, Drama and Limited Series Winners, and any last-minute changes. In the cage match for the most Emmys, HBO and Netflix enter the evening tied for 19 Emmy wins each. But HBO only needed three series to Netflix’s five. Not to be outdone is Disney+ debut with an impressive eight wins so far. While we’ve seen in the past three years a dominance by the Series nominees, the Creative Arts broadened their winners to include more than the Series nominees. It was the second win for Ron Cephas Jones in Outstanding Drama Guest Actor for “This Is Us” that gave hope to all actors trying on the main telecast to buck this trend. However, “This Is Us” has won that category three out of the past four years. And with the dominance established by the leading contenders for Outstanding Comedy, Drama and Limited Series, I don't expect any major surprises in the top 3 categories tonight.
By Tom O'Brien
Well, that was a one-of-a-kind Emmys. As one would expect during the pandemic, the 2020 Creative Arts Emmys were awarded virtually this year, with host Nicole Byer, an Emmy nominee herself for hosting the reality show "Nailed It!," introducing presenters from outside the Television Academy building in North Hollywood, CA.

It was a strange year for film in 1980. It was the tail end of the new Hollywood era – a period of filmmaking that had run from 1967 up to the early ‘80s. During this period, the likes of Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma, Altman, and Ashby burst onto the screen, and we saw films such as “Taxi Driver,” “Carrie,” “Nashville,” and “Harold and Maude” dramatically change the cinematic landscape. However, by 1980, there had been several flops directed by the “New Hollywood” directors including Martin Scorsese’s musical misfire, “New York, New York,” Steven Spielberg’s “1941,” and perhaps the most famous “flop” of all time, Michael Cimino’s “Heaven’s Gate.” The 1980s would see the rise of the “brat pack” film and a new era of high budget, high concept action flicks. Gone were the days of the auteur-driven picture, and instead, the studios preferred to churn out slasher film after slasher film, knowing that they were quick to make and would earn big bucks.

As reported by Deadline, Lee Isaac Chung ("Minari") will be directing the live action reboot of the acclaimed Japanese animated film "Your Name." The screenplay was originally penned by Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”) but will be getting a rewrite from Chung. |
