How did we feel about the themes of memory, time, and nostalgia? We discuss all of these topics and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. Releasing from IFC Midnight this weekend, "Demonic" represents many firsts for "District 9" director Neil Blomkamp. It's the first time he's working within the horror genre. The film also marks the return of the director to low-budget filmmaking after his first three films employed higher budgets and visual effects. This also marks the first time he's working with cinematographer Byron Kopman on one of his feature-length films. Byron was kind enough to take some time to explain his working relationship with Neil, the experience of shooting the film, and more! Take a listen down below and enjoy! Emmy winner voting officially begins today. There are a lot of categories to discuss and how they're mostly all linked to one another when making your predictions on who the Emmy voters will go for. As I've done in previous years, I'm going to take you television and Emmy fans through how to methodically make your Emmy predictions and win your awards pool, starting with what I think is the most critical category not on the main telecast: Casting.

"Cryptozoo" is, without a doubt, one of the most unique experiences one is likey to have, not just with animation, but with any film this year. The highly detailed world, creative character designs, and level of imagination needed for a project like this have taken director/writer and producer Jane Samborski many years to bring to life. The film made its debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and now with its theatrical release coming this weekend from Magnolia Pictures. The husband and wife filmmaking team were kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing with us the work that went into making one of the year's best animated films. The Emmy Awards are exactly a month away, and Netflix's "The Crown" earned a whopping 24 nominations for its fourth and most acclaimed season. Each of the previous three seasons received 13 nominations, making this year almost double their usual nomination haul. Season four was its most highly anticipated with the debut of Princess Diana and the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher. After failing to get that first big win in the Drama Series category, "The Crown" has risen to the occasion and is now the frontrunner for the category. With COVID taking out most of its competition, a new question has emerged: Can "The Crown" sweep the top awards at the Emmys?

Some film titles are so catchy, memorable, and iconic that they instantly intrigue a person. "Snakes on a Plane" was a title that got everyone buzzing back in 2006. Regarding the film's clever title, screenwriter John Heffernan stated in an interview that it was "so simple, so unvarnished, so unapologetically sui generis. Just those four words: snakes on a plane. Again, you got it, or you didn't. And people definitely got it." The film's title, premise, and star power (Samuel L. Jackson was the main pull) managed to set the internet aflame before the film's release, as film critic Mark Brown put it, "Snakes on a Plane" was "perhaps the most internet-hyped film of all time." To celebrate the film's 15th anniversary, let's discuss its journey to the big screen.

Two embattled Hollywood Foreign Press members that present the Golden Globes permanently quit the group a few weeks ago. It seems that rats are fleeing the sinking ship or perhaps a ship that has already sunk. The Globes have long had a history of scandal and a general feeling that the awards could be bought. This has caused them to be dumped from network TV in the past, but this time seems much more severe and perhaps insurmountable. While the past controversies of voters being easily swayed by gifts and fancy parties must have annoyed other nominees who lost, the current accusations of racial discrimination and sexual demeaning behavior towards women just won't stand in a post-#metoo/George Floyd America. NBC has already announced they won't air the show next year, and it remains to be seen if the awards will even be presented. Bad news for the Hollywood Foreign Press, but this may just be the best thing that has happened to the Oscars in years.

Growing up is hard. It is one of the first major transformative times in one's life. From graduating high school to figuring out your next steps, a lot of change happens in a once steady and predictable life. All this variation is the perfect setting for a story. It is no wonder why the coming-of-age genre, which usually follows a high school senior towards the end of the school year, is so popular. This time is prone to drama and conflict – the perfect blend for a film – and most in the genre center on the young individual and the first big choice they must make by the time the end credits roll. In reality, this is just as transformative a time for young adults as it is for the family surrounding them. The latest coming-of-age story is "CODA," the Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner released on Apple TV+. It follows Ruby (Emilia Jones), a high school senior who is the only hearing member of her family. In addition to being a delightful addition to the genre, the film tackles this journey not just with Ruby but with her entire family, especially her parents.

For our second podcast review this week, Nicole Ackman, Zach Gilbert, Ema Sasic, Will Mavity & Lauren LaMagna all join me to discuss the Sundance Award-winning hit indie film "CODA" starring Emilia Jones, Eugenio Derbez, Troy Kotsur, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Daniel Durant and Marlee Matlin. What did we think of the film's story, characters, the inclusion of deaf actors playing deaf characters, and future awards prospects for this little film that could? We discuss all of these topics and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "Free Guy" Production Designer, Ethan Tobman8/13/2021
By Daniel Howat
After what has felt like a forever-long delay from its initial release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 20th Century Studios is finally releasing "Free Guy" in theaters this weekend starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery & Taika Waititi. It's been called "The Truman Show" for a new generation, and the result is an enthusiastic, fun, and surprisingly thoughtful social commentary on free will and the imaginary worlds we create for ourselves outside of the real one. That fictional world in this film is "Free City," which required creative world-building and ingenuity to bring to life on the big screen. Production Designer Ethan Tobman was kind enough to discuss his work on the film with us, which you can listen to below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. After sweeping the 2021 Sundance Film Festival awards (earning the U.S. Grand Jury Prize - Dramatic, Directing Award - U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Audience Award, and a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for its ensemble cast) and breaking records for its $25 million sale to Apple, it's safe to say that hype for Sian Heder's "CODA" has been through the roof. Could any film possibly live up to such lofty expectations? Thankfully, so far, "CODA" seems to be doing just that and more.

We are down to the final two podcasts in our 2013 retrospective. Next up is David O. Russell's hotly contested Best Picture nominee "American Hustle," starring Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper. Receiving positive reviews, strong box-office, and 10 Academy Award nominations at the time of its release (including all four of its main actors), the film has always had a divisive reaction amongst those in the industry and the online community, which continues to this day. Eight years later, what do we think of the film today? Has the story held up? What about the performances? How do we feel about O. Russell's stylistic attempts to mimic Martin Scorsese? We discuss all of these elements and more in this messy review for an equally messy movie. Joining me for this review, I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz, Casey Lee Clark, Zach Gilbert, and guest Ryan C. Showers. You can also check out our previous 2013 retrospective reviews of "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," "The Great Gatsby," "Her," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Frozen," "Gravity" & "Nebraska" if you have not done so already.
