As the nation's leading theater chains began to lure back audiences with a string of studio-backed tentpoles early this summer, arthouses took a much different approach, relying on a slew of documentaries, most of which were celebrity-driven, to lure back older audiences. In the past few months, we have seen such notable works as "Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain," "Val" about actor Val Kilmer, and "Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It," as well as documentaries on choreographers Alvin Ailey and Bill T. Jones. So, amidst all of these new documentaries, it stands to reason that any good Oscarologist would naturally turn to what it all means to the upcoming Oscar race for Best Documentary Feature. Among documentaries already released in theaters, a consensus is beginning to form that only three films have a real shot at an Oscar nomination...

It's been 604 days since a mysterious cluster of pneumonia cases began appearing in the city of Wuhan, China. Since then, the world has dramatically changed to adapt to COVID-19. Every aspect of our lives has been affected, from how we greet our friends to how we use public transport. It has changed the way we work and what activities we can participate in. For many avid cinephiles, it has impacted the way we watch films. The pandemic has also affected how we define a Box Office hit. As a result, what would have been considered major tentpole movies have earned themselves the reputation of being flops. However, as I will be exploring in this article, it's hardly fair to wipe off films such as "Jungle Cruise," "Space Jam: A New Legacy," and "Cruella" as Box Office bombs when the entire film industry is struggling to stay afloat.

After being forced to cancel its in-person festival last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Telluride Film Festival returns this week with a lineup that promises to be bigger than ever to make up for the lack of last year. Paying patrons, Oscar bloggers, film critics, and eager audience members from all over the world will be traveling to the mountains of Colorado for the four-day festival (9/2-9/6), which runs in the middle of the Venice International Film Festival (9/1-9/11), bringing us the unofficial kickoff to the 2021 awards season. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will soon follow on September 9th and run until the 18th, followed by the New York Film Festival (NYFF) from September 24th, taking us into October until the 10th. It's always an overwhelming, busy time, and this year I'm proud to say I'll be personally covering three out of the four, which is a new record for me (Telluride, TIFF & NYFF), but it all starts with Telluride. Famous for keeping its lineup a secret until audience members arrive, what might be playing at this year's festival? I've been doing some investigative work, analyzing the lineups for the other festivals, and paying close attention to the premiere status of each film. Click below to see what I think will be playing at this year's Telluride Film Festival.

In just a few days, I'll be flying through the skies on my way to the Venice Film Festival. It'll be my first time at the festival (and my first visit to Italy in general), and to say I'm excited would be an understatement. The collection of films that will be premiering there is varied and intriguing, with a mix of proven creatives and new blood getting a chance to show their work. The following films are the ones I'm currently planning to watch and review, but I may see even more based on word-of-mouth. Unfortunately, due to travel plans, I will be departing before the premieres of "Halloween Kills" and "The Last Duel." Still, the films listed below should provide more than enough cinematic greatness to make the trip well worth it.

This week, Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat join me for our main podcast review of Nia DaCosta's "Candyman," starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett & Colman Domingo. A sequel and soft-reboot to the 1992 original horror film the film has been delayed numerous times of the past year but is finally here for us to dissect. What did we think of the film's themes, performances, and technical elements? Were any of these impacted by the film's 91 minute running time? We discuss all of these topics and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. "Candyman" has been on the lips of moviegoers more often than it has been in decades, thanks to Nia DaCosta's sequel/soft reboot releasing this weekend. Much of the conversation has revolved around the dated aspects of the 1992 original, particularly regarding the "white savior" trope. However, there's still plenty about the film that's compelling and worth remembering. With that said, let's track down a mirror and tempt fate by summoning the film that first bore the name of "Candyman" (studios are going to have to get a little more creative with their reboot titles). The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "The Lost Leonardo" Sound Designer, Peter Albrechtsen8/27/2021
By Will Mavity
Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen is becoming one of our most frequent and favorite guests to have on the Next Best Picture Podcast, and it's easy to see why. Even with a film such as "The Lost Leonardo," a documentary about the discovery of a lost painting supposedly by Leonardo da Vinci, he's still a wealth of knowledge and insight into the creative filmmaking process for movies that don't have the most obvious use of sound work. Listening to him is a real pleasure, and you should check out our previous chats with him if you haven't already as well as the latest down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. "The Power of the Dog" had its teaser trailer debut yesterday, right before it's selected to play at the Venice, Toronto, and New York film festivals. Because it's the rare film to screen at all the major festivals in the next few weeks, it may well be the preseason favorite to 'win' film festival season and set the early bar for the Oscar race. Being the big breakout of film festival season carried "Nomadland" all the way last year and has worked for pretty much every Best Picture winner since the mid-2000s. "The Power of the Dog" would have a long way to go to match that, even if it is the major contender that all its festival bookings suggest. Nonetheless, all the signs are there to suggest it could be.

It's that time of the year. One week from today, I'll be in Telluride, Cody Dericks will be at the Venice Film Festival, and soon after that, Dan Bayer and I will be covering Toronto and New York. It's going to be one hell of a September as our most anticipated films of the year screen for audience members and critics in person or digitally for the first time. Before the madness begins, the team over at Next Best Picture has put together their first Oscar predictions of the year for you to absorb and dissect before official reactions roll in. Let's take a look at where the race stands on the eve of the fall film festivals.

Netflix has released the teaser trailer for "The Power of the Dog" starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, Adam Beach. The film new film from Jane Campion will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival next week and then play at all of the major fall film festivals after, followed by a limited theatrical release on November 17th and then on Netflix on December 1st. Our 2013 retrospective has come to an end. To finish things off, we're discussing the Best Picture winner of 2013, one of the most powerful films ever made, "12 Years A Slave," starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Lupita Nyong'o. Acclaimed upon its release and herald as a masterpiece since then, Steve McQueen's searing account of the unbelievably true story of Solomon Northup is a brutally demanding but rewarding film to sit through as we're transported back to the darkest time in American history. How does it hold up for us eight years later? Tune in below to find out. Joining me for this review, I have Josh Parham, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark & Will Mavity. You can also check out all of our previous 2013 retrospective reviews for "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," "The Great Gatsby," "Her," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Frozen," "Gravity," "Nebraska" & "American Hustle" if you have not done so already. A huge thank you to all of the Patreon listeners who went on this journey with us! We'll have more throwback reviews throughout the fall/winter and will be back with our 2012 retrospective next spring! The world's oldest film festival is set to return one week from today, from September 1st-11th. One of the "Big Three" film festivals, alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival is part of the Venice Biennale (a celebration of art set up by the Venice City Council way back in April 1893). While the festival did occur last year, with restrictions in place, this year, things are pretty much back to normal – Variety reporting that the festival's artistic director Alberto Barbera feels confident that "the situation will be much less complicated than Cannes." There are set to be free COVID tests on-site in different locations, but testing is not mandatory. This could be a sign that some normalcy is returning to the festival circuit. Bearing this in mind, it seems like a good time to revisit the past and explore the complex history of the Venice Film Festival. Beware, however, as the festival's early days aren't exactly pretty.

For our second podcast review this week, Amanda Spears, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark & Will Mavity join me to discuss the highly original, divisive, wild, and bombastic operatic musical from the brilliant mind of Leos Carax, "Annette." Starring Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard, Simon Helberg, and featuring music from Sparks, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to polarizing reactions and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, where those reactions are continuing. What did we think of it, though? Tune in below to hear us discuss the performances, songs, themes, and of course, that adorable puppet baby. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. Having your film nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture is one of the great honors of any director's career. To have that happen twice is even more extraordinary. But to have two of your films receive Best Picture nominations in the same year? That's an astounding accomplishment only nine directors have ever achieved and an event that has only occurred ten times in Oscar history. Because it hasn't happened since two Steven Soderbergh films scored Best Picture nods at the 73rd Academy Awards ("Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic"), some Oscar fans may forget that this used to be quite common in the Academy's early years. And, because there's a possibility we might see such a situation this year as well - with Ridley Scott gunning for Oscar glory with both the Lady Gaga-led "House of Gucci" and his dark historical drama "The Last Duel" - it's worth looking back at the past and seeing which directors have walked this path before him.

If there's any hope that writer-director Sian Heder has for her Sundance-winning film "CODA," it's for her actors to get the recognition they deserve. It's a fair hope that her actors, including deaf performers Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant, would receive accolades that so rarely come to performances like these. The Oscar-winning Matlin is one of the rare exceptions, though Heder notes Matlin still hasn't had the career she deserves. "CODA" centers on Ruby, a hearing child of deaf adults, played by newcomer Emilia Jones. Roughly 40% of the film is comprised of ASL, something that brought unique challenges for Heder. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Heder discusses the missed opportunities she sees when creators avoid casting actors with a disability and why she wants the world to see Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant as major stars. Speaking of Troy Kotsur, watching "Children of a Lesser God" as a 17-year-old, he promised his friends that he would work with Marlee Matlin one day. Thirty-five years later, he's made good on that promise in "CODA." Kotsur still recalls the impact of seeing Sign Language on screen all those years ago. Though films like "Sound of Metal" and "Feeling Through" were nominated for Academy Awards just last year, it's still a rarity to see deaf representation at the movies, which is why Kotsur is honored to star in a film that could inspire a new generation of young people. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Kotsur discussed how the story of "CODA" parallels his own family and how he collaborated with director Sian Heder to bring authenticity to the film. Both podcast interviews have been transcribed below as well. |
