The past couple of weeks have been exciting and depressing regarding the state of movie theaters and the industry in general. The weekend of September 4th has the power to have significant effects on the industry. There are three paths in the road presented to audiences. They can see "Tenet" in theaters, watch "Mulan" at home for a $29.99 price tag or do neither. With "Tenet" and "Mulan" opening against each other audiences will ask themselves "Should I risk my life to see "Tenet" even if it means I'm supporting the theatrical experience, or stay in the safety of my home to watch "Mulan?" But, let's be honest, outside of the film community, general audiences aren't too worried about the state of movie theaters, so they might ask themselves only a part of that question which is "Am I going to risk my life for "Tenet" or stay safe and watch "Mulan?"" But most countries are in a safe place regarding COVID-19, but the United States is by far in the worst position because they can't be united on how to deal with the virus. However, it's important to note that China has opened up its movie theaters again, and the box office is nowhere close to where it was before the pandemic. No matter what happens, it'll be interesting to see the decision that audiences make. We are living in a historical time not only for the world but for the movie industry. The Next Best Picture Podcast - Interview With "Boys State" Directors, Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss8/14/2020
By Daniel Howat
"Boys State" premiered earlier this year the Sundance Film Festival where it won U.S. Documentary Competition Grand Jury Prize. An A24 production, it got picked up by Apple and is now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+. The documentary follows a thousand teenage boys attending the Boys/Girls State program in Texas. Their goal is to put their political differences aside and come together to build a representative government from the ground up over the course of a week. The documentary's directors, Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, were kind enough to sit down and chat with us about how they came to the project, working on it and film's reception so far. Take a listen below! Thank you so much for listening. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sofia Coppola discussed her eighth film “On the Rocks”, and teased some of the story’s details. More shots from the film can be seen in the interview previously linked. The film was produced by A24 and will be released later this year in October on Apple+.

The 58th New York Film Festival announced its main slate on Thursday. This year’s films range from all over the world, as they are from 19 different countries. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival will be hosting drive-in and virtual screenings as it runs from September 17th to October 11th.

The 2014 retrospective is coming to an end. We have now come to Richard Linklater's 12-year- long opus "Boyhood" starring Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, and Ethan Hawke. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014 to universal critical acclaim, the gigantic independent film (shot over the course of 12 years) could not maintain its momentum until Oscar night where it lost Best Picture and Best Director, only winning one award for Patricia Arquette in the Best Supporting Actress category. Remembered for being a bridesmaid, how does the film hold up today? Was the praise warranted? I am joined by Dan Bayer and Patreon guests Isaiah Washington & Mike Pisa-Kino to discuss. Also be sure to check out our other 2014 reviews of "Selma," "Ida," "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Wild," "Inherent Vice," "Whiplash," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "American Sniper," "The Theory Of Everything" & "Interstellar." This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. As we eagerly await the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune," I noticed that many people are barely mentioning the film in their early Oscar predictions as a contender for major awards. Why? It is one of the year's most-anticipated films, and Villeneuve himself has become one of the most popular and renowned directors in the world over the last decade. He first got people’s attention with crime-thrillers like “Prisoners” and “Sicario,” but it was his jump to sci-fi that took his career to the next level. 2016’s “Arrival” was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, while 2017’s “Blade Runner 2049” was nominated for five Oscars, with wins for visual effects and Roger Deakins’ cinematography. However, “Dune” is a big-budget adaptation of a strange and complex sci-fi novel that not even surrealist David Lynch could crack. It’s not your typical awards film… or is it?

After previously announcing "Lovers Rock" and "Nomadland" as the Opening and Centerpiece selections for this year's New York Film Festival, it has been announced that Azazel Jacobs's "French Exit" will be the Closing Night Film for this year's festival, making its world premiere.

As reported by Deadline, Garth Davis (“Lion” & “Mary Magdalene”) has been tapped to direct the sequel to “Tron: Legacy.” There were rumors of the sequel being scrapped, with the film's pre-production being cancelled in 2015 due to the disappointment of "Tomorrowland." With Davis being attached to the project, the sequel may finally be green-lit, an entire decade later.

At the top of the 2020 Primetime Emmy nominations was HBO’s “Succession” with 18 nominations. The series tied with Netflix’s “Ozark” for most nominations for a Drama Series. As we turn our attention from predicting nominees to winners, “Succession” looks to keep the Drama Series crown at HBO. But should “Succession” win, it would be for the earliest season of all of HBO’s previous series winners.

The Paramount Decrees ended. Movies got their release dates moved and some were even sold off. The Hollywood Foreign Press got sued and more! As always, we go over the polls, answer your fan questions and give our reactions to two trailers this week: "Judas And The Black Messiah" and "I'm Thinking Of Ending Things." Enjoy! "She Dies Tomorrow" is a psychologically terrifying new film from writer/director Amy Seimetz that was meant to premiere at this year's South By Southwest film festival. The movie is now available to stream digitally this weekend on VOD and has already gained a lot of critical acclaim for its intriguing premise, the creative vision from Seimetz and the performances of the ensemble. Seimetz and two of the film's stars, Kate Lyn Shiel and Jane Adams, sat with us to talk about their experience of working on the film. Take a listen below. Thank you so much for listening. "Fear City: New York vs The Mafia" is Netflix's new limited series, focusing on the FBI’s efforts to bring down the five New York crime families; Gambino, Colombo, Bonanno, Lucchese, and Genovese. While telling the story from the FBI’s standpoint, "Fear City" taps into the themes and nostalgia associated with the rich genre of crime and gangster movies.

In these difficult times, the state of the world changes every day with new information. However, for movie fans, the one constant is the continued closure of movie theaters. While some local places have opened up here and there, the vast majority of these houses from the major chains remain closed, both in the United States and abroad. It’s one of the reasons why the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences put new rules in place this year, whereby films that premiered on streaming platforms could still qualify for Oscar consideration and the eligibility deadline was pushed until the end of February 2021. However, these changes were probably enacted for a temporary situation, one that hopefully saw theaters opening by the fall and productions that were put on hold allowed to continue. As the months drag on, that possibility is looking less and less certain.

On March 20th, 1995, Atsushi Sakahara was one of over 6,000 people injured in the attack on the Tokyo metro by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which chillingly still operates and recruits today under the name Aleph. In his debut film, the documentary "The Atonement" (previously titled “Me and the Cult Leader”) Sakahara embarks on a journey with the cult’s executive, Hiroshi Araki, in an attempt to understand the life and thoughts of an Aum member. What’s fascinating is the fact that the two men are around the same age, grew up in the same region, and attended the same university, but their lives diverged dramatically in the late ‘80s as Araki joined the doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo following a family illness, and Sakahara found himself a job in downtown Tokyo. Next Best Picture caught up with Sakahara to discuss how his relationship with Araki developed, how humor is an important aspect of his outlook on life, and his overall experience dealing with the cult.

During their Q3 earnings call today, Disney CEO Bob Chepak made the announcement that "Mulan" (2020) will be going to Disney+ on Friday, September 4th, 2020. This comes after the announcement a few days ago that the film had been removed from the 2020 release calendar for a theatrical run.

Next Best Adaptation is back where we review the source material of the year's potential Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar contenders. Last time, we looked at "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier and this time we are taking a look at Agatha Christie's mystery novel "Death On The Nile" which will be released on October 21st by Netflix. Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as the returning Hercule Poirot, it serves as a sequel to his 2017 film "Murder On The Orient Express." It will surely not only be compared to the source material but to the 1978 film of the same name. We mostly focus on the book here but also touch on the 1978 adaptation and what we hope for with Branagh's latest. Joining me for this podcast I have Will Mavity and Dan Bayer. As reported by Deadline, Netflix is in talks to purchase Joe Wright’s “The Woman in the Window” from 20th Century Studios. The film is the last project from Fox 2000, and its fate was left unclear when Disney acquired Fox in the spring of 2019.
