I usually thought that the idea of being heartbroken about the death of a celebrity felt like a silly endeavor. That is not to say there isn’t a place to mourn the loss of an artist and what they have contributed, but becoming so emotionally invested in the death of a person you have never met rings the tiniest bit as inauthentic. However, sometimes exceptions are made. Because there are moments when the life of one person whose path you’ve never crossed has had such a profound impact that knowing they are gone is meaningful. It had been quite some time since I last felt that. That sharp pain was felt again a few days ago when the world learned of the death of Chadwick Boseman.

As Bill and Ted return for the third film of their trilogy, in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” it’s imperative that the duo have a most excellent wardrobe as they try to save the world. The last time we saw the duo was in 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” and styles have certainly changed in the last 29 years. Costume designer Jennifer Starzyk spoke with Next Best Picture about her inspiration for working on a film that showcases some totally fun fashion from the past, present, and future.

For this week's main podcast review I'm joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat. Together we're reviewing the latest from Armando Iannucci, "The Personal History Of David Copperfield." With a color-blind and utterly delightful cast led by Dev Patel, Iannucci takes many risks with his Charles Dickens adaptation. How do they pay off? What did we think of the performances? The film's tone and humor? Find out in our review down below. Thank you so much for listening. It was a shock to the whole world when it was announced on Friday evening that Chadwick Boseman died at age 43 of colon cancer at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by his wife and family. He leaves behind a short but impactful legacy that touched the lives of millions of people all over the world through his dignified performances playing real-life iconic figures in history and fictionalized characters he made historic through his dedicated work. Boseman was born in South Carolina and would go on to graduate from Howard University and the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford, England (The latter of which was paid for by fellow actor Denzel Washington). Like many actors, he got his start on television with a series of parts in everything from “Third Watch,” “Law & Order,” “CSI: NY,” “ER,” “Cold Case,” a 13 episode run on “Persons Unknown,” “Castle,” and “Justified.”

This year has turned everything upside down, including some of the most significant award shows in Hollywood. The Emmys are going to be wildly different: television’s biggest night will be broadcast via Zoom (even celebrities have to use it!). When the nominees were announced on July 28th, two particular categories stuck out to me: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama. The field is stacked with incredible talent from some of the best drama series currently airing. There are eight actors and actresses nominated each. Let’s take a look at these nominees!

In a first look with EW, details of Disney’s newest animated film “Raya and the Last Dragon” were revealed. The film is about Raya, a warrior voiced by Kelly Marie Tran (“The Last Jedi”), who embarks on a journey to find the last dragon. Awkwafina will voice Sisu, a dragon that can transform into a human and is the last of her kind. A majority of the film’s animation has taken place remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it unique from a production perspective.

It's been a fun ride. With our review of "Gone Girl" on the Next Best Picture Podcast, we have come to the end of our 2014 retrospective. The NBP Film Award Nominations are out as are the NBP Film Community Award Nominations (Winners to be announced this Sunday) and David Fincher's film has been a constant presence amongst them as it has been in the public's subconsciousness since its debut in 2014. Grossly overlooked at the Academy Awards (with a lone Best Actress nomination for Rosamund Pike's horrifying and complex performance as Amy), we explore the film's themes, performances, technical merits and more! Joining me for this Patreon podcast review I have Amanda Spears, Dan Bayer, Ryan C. Showers, Danilo Castro & Patreon guests Michael Wachowiak & Cesar Infante. Be sure to check out all of our 2014 reviews of "Selma," "Ida," "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Wild," "Inherent Vice," "Whiplash," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "American Sniper," "The Theory Of Everything," "Interstellar," "Boyhood" & "Birdman." Thank you once again to the Patreon listeners and to the rest of you who gave us something truly fun to do during a pandemic. We'll see you next year for our 2013 retrospective! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. After starring in Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as the patriarch of the Kim family, Song Kang-ho will have a lead role in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (“Shoplifters”) newest film. Song will star alongside Bae Doona (“Cloud Atlas”) and Gang Dong-won (“Peninsula”) in Kore-eda’s first Korean language film, titled “Baby, Box, Broker.”

I’m going to take you television fans through how to methodically make your Emmy predictions and win your pool. Previously we looked at Outstanding Comedy & Drama Writing and Directing. Next up, the hard to predict Outstanding Limited Series/TV Movie Writing and Directing categories. Five years ago, the Emmys moved to a plurality vote replacing the more level playing field of 80-100 person panels. Since we spend more time watching television than a film, it’s easier to let our personal preferences affect our predictions as we try to manifest a win for our favorites.

Part of following the Oscar race year after year means that you must expect things to not always go the way you thought they would. It’s beyond difficult to get a perfect score on your predictions. Adding to the difficulty, something that is even beyond unpredictable must be taken into consideration: the dreaded tie. It would seem to be impossible that with thousands of Academy voters submitting ballots, two nominees would end up with both the same amount of votes and the most number of votes in their category. Shockingly, it has happened five times across the ninety-two Oscar ceremonies we’ve had so far (there was a sixth tie that wasn’t exactly a tie by the standard definition, but more on that later). While the ties happened in different categories, two things are true of each win: they were always surprising, and they usually elicited an unceremoniously unrehearsed reaction from the celebrity presenting the award.

Danny Wolf's documentary "Skin: A History Of Nudity In The Movies" is a film buff's dream. Not only do you get a behind-the-scenes look at the evolution of cinema through its depiction of nudity but you also hear from those who were on set, involved in the process or experts on the topic, providing a historical overview of one of cinema's most controversial topics. Danny Wolf was kind enough to sit down with us to discuss his newest film, the vast history the documentary attempts to tackle, who he wishes he could've interviewed and more! For this week's main podcast review I don't have my regular podcasting crew. Instead, I am joined by guests Rafael Motamayor & Nate Adams. Together, we are reviewing the film that was supposed to be the first movie audiences see in a theater (and for some, it still is), "Unhinged" starring Russell Crowe. What do we think of the first offering from Solstice Studios? Are people ready to go back to movie theaters? Is this the film to bring them back? Find out our thoughts on the cultural conversation and the movie itself down below. Thank you so much for listening. Time has been the central preoccupation of Christopher Nolan's filmography, whether through literal ticking clocks or his frequent use of non-linear narratives. The passage of time is inevitable, but the perception of time is ephemeral and prone to such human errors as delusion and overestimation. Things are never how we remember them to be, and Nolan has carved out one of Hollywood’s most successful careers by exploring these crucial differences in the science fiction, superhero, and war genres. Nolan’s upcoming film, “Tenet,” will add another panel to his man vs. time mosaic, tackling ambitious concepts like time inversion and communication with the future. We’re all curious to see what the director will do with this premise, and to what lengths he will indulge his stylistic trademarks; but seeing as we here in the U.S. have time to kill before the release date, we’ve decided to look back at the film that introduced his fractured perception to the mainstream: “Memento” (2000).

We have come to the Best Picture winner of 2014 in our retrospective. "Birdman" led the Oscar nominations with a tying 9 nominations and also tied for the amount of wins, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay. How well does the film hold up after such a successful night at the Academy Awards? How have its themes aged? Do the performances still hold up? What do we think of Alejandro G. Inarritu's storytelling and Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography. Join myself, Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer and Patreon guests Charles Bright & Jason Woods as we discuss all of this and more for two and a half hours. Also be sure to check out our other 2014 reviews of "Selma," "Ida," "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Wild," "Inherent Vice," "Whiplash," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "American Sniper," "The Theory Of Everything," "Interstellar" & "Boyhood." I’m going to take you television fans through how to methodically make your Emmy predictions and win your pool. First up in this series of articles is Outstanding Comedy Writing and Directing. Five years ago, the Emmys moved to a plurality vote replacing the more level playing field of 80-100 person panels ranking the nominees. Since we spend more time watching television than a film, it’s easier to let our personal preferences affect our predictions as we try to manifest a win for our favorites.

Amy Adams, who turns 46 today, is no newcomer when it comes to awards season. In fact, she’s quite the opposite. Within her 21-year career and 63 credits to her name, Adams has been nominated for an Academy Award six times. But despite her critically acclaimed work, especially in the last decade where she earned four of her six nominations, Adams has never graced the Oscar stage as a recipient. But could 2020, the year of uncertainty where everything just doesn’t make sense, turn out to be Adams’ year?

As reported by THR, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion animated film “Pinocchio” has added Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard, and Tim Blake Nelson to its existing cast, where they join Cate Blanchett and Ewan McGregor. The film, based off of the fairytale fable of the same name, has been shooting since the fall of 2019. “Pinocchio” will be released by Netflix for both an online and theatrical release.

I know that the question may sound preposterous, but as the pandemic rolls on with theaters only beginning to open, decisions will have to be made as to just what kinds of films will be enticing enough for moviegoers to leave the safety of their homes to chance sitting in a socially-distanced movie theater for two hours. To no one's surprise, the initial consensus is that only such pre-sold blockbusters such as the soon-to-open "Tenet" or "Wonder Woman 1984" would offer a lure so irresistible to moviegoers that butts would soon fill completely-sanitized theater seats. But what of the other films, such as the mid-level kids movies, horror films or serious dramas? I fear that the necessity this spring and summer of moving these kinds of films to streaming could become the rule rather than the exception.

This year has not been a kind year for the film festival. Several major film festivals including Cannes and Telluride have been canceled as a result of the current coronavirus pandemic, and rightly so. We can probably all agree that the idea of thousands of people from across the globe gathering in one place, standing shoulder to shoulder, and sitting tightly packed inside a small dark room for long periods, is the perfect breeding ground for a virus as deadly as COVID-19. Some film festivals still took place at the start of the year, most notably Sundance and Berlinale. However, a report from the Hollywood Reporter stated that this year’s Sundance Film Festival could have been the “first petri dish” for the spread of the virus with many attendees reporting coronavirus-like symptoms after attending the festival. However, it is worth mentioning that according to the festival organizers, they are “not aware of any confirmed festival-connected cases of Covid-19.” |
