For the majority of the past century, the 1939 film "Gone With the Wind" has frequently been cited as a masterpiece. It frequently tops lists of the greatest films of all time, it swept the Oscars the year of its release, and, adjusted for inflation, it is still the highest-grossing film of all time. By nearly every quantifiable standard, it is undeniably one of the most successful films in history. But as it nears its 80th anniversary, is "Gone With the Wind" still worthy of the unending praise it continues to receive?

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham and together we review the popular children's horror book adaptation to the screen, "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark." Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by André Øvredal ("Trollhunter" & "The Autopsy Of Jane Doe"), the film embraces traditional scares, a creepy atmosphere and practical effects to create a horror movie for kids. What did we, as adults, think though? Tune in to find out. Thank you so much for listening. We all remember our first. Specifically, we all remember the first time we were scared witless by a movie or a book, forced to sleep with the lights on for days, or quickly pulling back the shower curtain to startle whoever must be hiding behind it. With this weekend’s release of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” I think these memories are all the more omnipresent, as the original collections of short stories were responsible for introducing an entire generation to the horror genre. In celebration of firsts, I decided to ask my fellow Next Best Picture members what their first experiences with the horror genre was, and their responses are nothing short of delightful.

The 1940s is justly considered one of the greatest decades for American cinema, some of the best directors, writers and actors to have lived were working during this time and even though the Hays Code was in effect, the clever ones found ways around its limitations to make their films. Billy Wilder is one of those great directors, a demanding and cantankerous man who makes the AFI’s Top 100 an astounding four times, with only Alfred Hitchcock tying him for most contributions. For “Double Indemnity”, based on a novella by James M. Cain, he teamed up with Raymond Chandler to write the script. Chandler was a newbie to screenwriting at this time but was also a popular pulp fiction novelist who also happened to be in the process of rewriting what a mystery story could be with his noir-style detective tales. It took several difficult months of writing and years of negotiation with the authorities of the MPPDA to produce a film that could be released to the general public. But the product of all those efforts gave the world a landmark story that has inspired generations of filmmakers and novelists.

For this week's third podcast review, Casey Lee Clark, myself and guest filmmaker Oniffe White dive into the movie which still stands as personally, my favorite film of 2019: "Luce." Starring a knockout ensemble which includes Kelvin Harrison Jr., Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth and filled with more themes and thought-provoking questions than most movies, this riveting movie provided us with a thoughtful discussion for this week's review. Tune in below to find out what we thought. Thank you so much for listening. Long before the "Avengers" and the "Justice League" exploded onto our screens, there was another superhero squad who were brought together to fight crime and save the day. I suspect many of you reading this aren’t aware of the 1999 film “Mystery Men.” Of course, you are excused for not knowing who the ‘mystery men’ are, as the film flopped specularly at the Box Office, earning just $33 million worldwide against a $68 million budget. Since the film’s disastrous release, its director Kinka Usher hasn’t directed another feature film. In fact, it’s claimed that during production Usher declared "I'm going back to commercials when this is done. I've had enough. I'd much rather do my cool little one-minute shorts that I make than deal with all this nonsense."

For this week's second podcast review, Dan Bayer and I, along with guest Valerie Complex, take a look at one of the year's most brutal, polarizing and thought-provoking films, Jennifer Kent's follow-up to "The Babadook," titled "The Nightingale." The film stars newcomers Aisling Franciosi and Baykali Ganambarr, along with Sam Claflin in a role that's unlike anything he has ever done before. The movie has received a considerable amount of buzz for its sexual violence and brutality, but what did we all think? Tune in below to find out. Thank you so much for listening. I distinctly remember the first time I watched "Drop Dead Gorgeous:" in middle school on the E! Network, which perfectly sums up the vibe of this movie. I’m sure a lot of the jokes went over my head, but I couldn’t help but be drawn to these wacky characters in outlandish situations talking to the camera. Now here we are, with the film recently celebrating its 20th anniversary, I can finally tell you all about my love for this under-seen gem of a movie.

After the initial Twitter reactions to “The Lion King” dropped, there were many online saying “this has the Best Visual Effects Oscar in the bag” and “all other VFX contenders can go home now.” And then the actual reviews dropped. And reactions were much much more divided. Some people blamed all of their problems with the film as a whole on the film’s effects. Terms like “uncanny valley” kept getting thrown around, along with comparisons to the Peter Cushing CGI work in “Rogue One.” And then people started thinking…maybe we’ve been looking at the wrong giant cat movie in this category. Maybe we should start looking at “Cats.” Surely, it will look bet-- Oh my god, kill it with fire! So…obviously, the “Cats” VFX work is incomplete, and it could be dramatically improved by December - who knows. But right now, it seems like it might be too creepy looking to win the category as well. So who does that leave as viable contenders? As far as I can tell, aside from “Cats” and “The Lion King,” neither of which are sure things, there are only 9 other films that feel as though they end up in the hunt to win the Visual Effects Oscar…and they all have detractors as well.

Earlier this year, filmmaker Guy Nattiv won the Oscar in the Live Action Short category for his short “Skin.” It’s always interesting to see where the filmmakers behind these shorts go after winning the Oscar, and normally, it isn’t too far. For every Andrea Arnold or Martin McDonagh, there are countless filmmakers who we never hear from again or at least their feature films aren’t as prominent. In Nattiv’s case, he already had a feature-length film in the can, also called “Skin,” one that premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and A24 had already stepped up to distribute it. Unlike the short, which takes place in a similar world, the feature is based on the true story of Bryon Widner, a tattoo-covered white supremacist neo-Nazi from the Midwest, who has a change of heart due to a few new factors in his life. In the movie, Bryon is played by Jamie Bell, the leaders of his gang – and Bryon’s ersatz adoptive parents -- are played by Vera Farmiga and Bill Camp. Things change for Bryon when he meets Julie, played by Danielle Macdonald (“Patti Cake$”), a single mother with three daughters who he motivates him to want to change his ways. At the same time, an FBI agent played by Mike Colter (“Luke Cage”) is pressuring Bryon to turn on his “family,” and these two things motivate Bryon to get surgery to remove the hateful tattoos that cover his entire body and face.s Next Best Picture spoke with Nattiv last week about his film, and he also gave us the 411 on the next movie he’s developing to shoot soon, an interesting personal family story that sounds amazing and should have some great roles for a mostly female cast.

For this year's Oscar off-season, we are taking a look back on the 2015 film year which was right before Next Best Picture launched. We asked the NBP Film Community to vote on 5 films nominated for Best Picture and 5 films nominated for Oscars other than Best Picture from that year to be reviewed on the podcast, exclusively for our Patreon subscribers. We already reviewed "Brooklyn," "Sicario," "Ex Machina," "Room," "Spotlight," "Inside Out," "The Revenant," and now, we are reviewing Quentin Tarantino's 8th film "The Hateful Eight." One of Tarantino's more divided films, there has been a lot of debate about the "The Hateful Eight's" style, its decision to shoot in 70mm for a mostly claustrophobic setting, its characters, themes and more. With an almost three hour running time and a few years to look back and reflect, this revisit gave us some new found perspective on Tarantino's whodunit western. Joining me for this 2015 retrospective podcast review is Josh Parham and Danilo Castro. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For the small price of $1 a month, you can receive this review along with other exclusive podcast content, so be sure to subscribe here. Thank you so much for listening.
