In a piece at Variety, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced new rule changes today. In addition to affirming a shift from a sliding scale of five to ten nominations to a firm ten Nominees, as was the case in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, AMPAS has announced a few significant changes which will take effect for this year's ceremony.

Today, I'm 30. I'm not scared! Really! I've been using this arbitrary milestone as a time to think and reflect on various aspects of my life, and arguably, nothing has defined and shaped my general personality and viewpoint like the movies. As I pass into my third decade, I'd like to use this as a chance to talk about the films that have meant the most to me in my life so far and try to expound on why exactly film consumption and discussion means so much to me and to so many of us. Thank you for indulging this birthday boy by going on this highly personal journey with me!

This week, Daniel Howat & Danilo Castro are joining me for our main podcast review, "F9," starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, John Cena & Jordana Brewster. It is the ninth film in what has now become known as The Fast Saga. What do you think of it compared to the others, and how do we feel about the franchise's future? We discuss heavy spoilers in this review, so listen with caution if you haven't seen the film already. Just remember, this franchise doesn't need our approval; it's got family. So kick back, pop open a Corona and enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. "Fast & Furious" is one of Hollywood's greatest underdog stories. It's the little racecar that could, defying industry notions about diversity and longevity and cranking out some of the most ridiculously fun action films of the 21st century. What makes these films so much fun is their cartoonish set pieces and their willingness to laugh at themselves and evolve with the times by embracing spinoffs and new cast members. Vin Diesel is the franchise's Tom Cruise, an actor/producer who knows what the fans want and will give it to them, regardless of how ludicrous it may be. Driving off a cliff? Sure. Scaling a submarine? Ok. Launching into outer space? Why the hell not? The absurdity is balanced out by the anchoring theme of family, which extends to the franchise's stellar roster of actors (Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Jason Statham, just to name a few). The franchise's latest installment, "F9," is now in theaters, and to commemorate its release, we decided to bust out the NOS and rank the "Fast & Furious" films from worst to best. The road might be dangerous, but we'll be good as long as we take it a quarter-mile at a time.

Our 2013 retrospective is continuing with Spike Jonze's Oscar-winning film "Her," starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt and the incredible voice talent of Scarlett Johansson. Set in the not too distant future, the film explores relationships, depression, loneliness, and humanity's connection (or lack thereof) with one another as it relates to our ever-growing dependence on technology. There's a lot to talk about with this one, and to join me in this discussion, I have Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, and guest Joe Lorenzini. Take a listen as we discuss the film's themes, its crafts, performances, Oscar awards season run, and more! Enjoy! You can also check out our previous 2013 retrospective reviews of "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," & "The Great Gatsby" if you have not done so already. I am not making any grand statement by saying that you wanted to be a superhero at some point in your life. Admit it; you'd put on that cape and pretended to save the world before dinner time or trick or treated like your favorite good guy. It's natural. It's a significant part of popular culture, media, and growing up. Not to mention, it is also loved by millions. So when an actor embarks on their career, it is only natural that they fantasize about putting on that cape and saving the world in the movies. They might not admit it in every interview, but if someone offered them a role in a superhero movie, odds are they'd take it.

There's no denying the fact that the review-aggregation website known as Rotten Tomatoes has changed the landscape of film and television criticism since its inception twenty-two years ago. Love it or loathe it, Rotten Tomatoes is the place that many film consumers go to as a way to determine whether or not they want to depart with their hard-earned cash for a rental or a movie ticket. Rotten Tomatoes has impacted the movie business that it left film studios positively shaken up by its presence [SC1]. Unfortunately, the site has been blamed for the dismal box office earnings of several films such as "Baywatch" and "The Mummy" remakes due to the poor scores each film was given. This actually resulted in 20th Century Fox conducting a 2015 study, "Rotten Tomatoes and Box Office" (see above source), which found that the website and the rise of social media were having an adverse effect on the film business.
