Craig Gillespie already had a stellar filmography, but everything changed when he made "I, Tonya" in 2017. It caught the eyes of Disney executives who brought him on for his biggest project yet, a live-action origin story of one of Disney's most notorious villains in "Cruella." Craig was kind enough to spend some time talking about how he came on board for the project, what it was like working with Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, finding the right tone for the dark story, and more! The pandemic hit movie theaters hard. No matter where you lived, theaters were shut down at some point in the past 15 months, and the movie-going experience relied on streaming services. And while streaming proved its power as the new dominant force in exhibition, big studio films and their delays proved the theatrical experience still has life yet to live. Although movie theaters were open and available in some form or another for many people for a long while during the pandemic, the Memorial Day weekend was the first real sense of normalcy at the movies. My fully vaccinated self saw "A Quiet Place Part II" this weekend. As much as I thrived in watching artful independent films on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu throughout the Oscar season, being swallowed up in a sea of people all heading into a movie theater is a pretty sensational feeling. In fact, going back to the movie theater yesterday, in many ways, felt as though I had arrived home after a long hiatus.

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham, Daniel Howat & guest Amanda Guaraggi. Today, we discuss the latest Disney-live action film that takes one of their most infamous characters and gives us a backstory explaining how they came to be as we know them today. In this case, it's one of their greatest villains of all time, Cruella de Vil, in Craig Gilespie's ("I, Tonya") "Cruella" starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. What did we think of the story? The costumes? The performances? The style? We discuss all of this and more in our latest review. Enjoy darling! Thank you so much for listening. It's been said that marriage is a partnership. It is a bond between two people that requires complete trust in order to get through life's various setbacks. The same can be said for the relationship between the director and actor, which often has to contend with power plays, external changes, and differences of opinion. The effort these different partnerships demand is what makes it so damned impressive when people can do both. There have been countless examples of spouses who have worked together as director and actor. They can sometimes result in disaster (Guy Ritchie and Madonna's "Swept Away" comes to mind), but these collaborations yield great results more often than not. "A Quiet Place Part II" is now in theaters, and since real-life couple John Krasinski (co-writer/director) and Emily Blunt (star) are the faces of the franchise, we felt it time to revisit the best director/actor partners who also happened to be married. For clarity's sake, we will not be including directors and actors who were unmarried at the time of their collaboration(s). They must already be spouses, which leaves out notable pairs like James Cameron and Linda Hamilton ("The Terminator" & "T2: Judgement Day") or Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw ("Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom").

This week, “Cruella," the live-action prequel centering on the origin story of the classic Disney villain Cruella de Vil, enters both theaters and the Oscar race in a few below-the-line categories. After the trailer dropped, it was obvious Disney had another contender on its hands for categories such as Costume Design and Production Design. But what are “Cruella’s” chances of victory? A live-action retelling of a classic Disney animation has proven as of late to be a good way of receiving Best Costume or Production Design nominations and sometimes both!

After several years of being in development and missing its first two initial release dates, Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" was finally unveiled to the world on 27th May 2011. Malick is an enigma of a director who broke onto the scene in the 1970s with two impactful films, "Badlands" and my personal favorite film, "Days of Heaven." After scoring success with both films, Malick disappeared off the face of the earth. Well, he just went on an extended hiatus after trying to get his project "Q," which was Malick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" The film was meant to be "a history of the cosmos up through the formation of the Earth and the beginnings of life." Eventually, the concept of "Q" would evolve into Malick's most personal film, "The Tree of Life."

Our 2013 retrospective is continuing with our final podcast this month, and it's a big one! Whenever there's a discussion about a Martin Scorsese-directed film, it's a big deal, and his 2013 Best Picture nominee "The Wolf Of Wall Street" has been the subject of much controversy making it one of the master filmmaker's most divisive films in his illustrious filmography. With a wildly possessed performance from DiCaprio, a surprising turn from Jonah Hill, and a breakout role for Margot Robbie, the film is not short on various talking points ranging from the acting to the direction, screenplay, and editing. What did we think of this three-hour-long film on the meaning of excess and greed? Find out as I'm joined by Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, and Michael Schwartz. Enjoy! You can also check out our previous 2013 retrospective reviews of "Captain Phillips" & "Philomena" if you have not done so already. The Golden Globes are toast, at least for the 2022 ceremony. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's vague talk of inclusiveness, spotlighted by the lack of a single black journalist invited to join the group, has been Topic A within the film community the past few weeks, with some in Hollywood hoping that the HFPA gets its act together for 2023, and others simply saying "Good riddance!" Although some journalists and publicists considered the Globes with disdain at the privileged demands made by many in the group's membership, the fact remains that the Globes have had an enormous impact on some films in their campaigns for Academy Award consideration.

Fifteen years ago, "X-Men: The Last Stand" premiered in theaters following its debut at Cannes (yep, that's right). It brought back its fresh-face-turned-movie-star cast and was ready to conclude the first successful cinematic comic book trilogy. But after a few weeks of horrible reviews and fan reactions, it was clear that "X-Men: The Last Stand" was the first failure of the X-Men franchise.

Glenn Close brought the house down in "Sunset Boulevard" on Broadway with the second act power ballad "As If We Never Said Goodbye." She oddly seems to be living out that song now in her film career. Six days after Close lost her eighth Oscar and tied the record for all-time nominations by an actor without a win with Peter O'Toole, Close had a new film, "Four Good Days," open, and yes, once again, she got Oscar buzz. Granted, this will be a long shot for Close since the film opened so early in the year with not much publicity. Still, she did get great reviews from esteemed critics like Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Time and Pete Hammond of Deadline (Hammond even started off his review touting her Oscar chances).

In 2012, I was on a trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, with my Mom and Granma. We had just eaten dinner and walked around Universal CityWalk Orlando; the two of them wanted to see a show. However, I didn't want to go, choosing instead to see "The Hunger Games" at what was then known as AMC Universal Cineplex. That night, I fell in love with Suzanne Collins' Young Adult dystopian franchise, and it happened during my first experience at an AMC theater ever. I loved the atmosphere and can still remember it vividly, the feel of the seats, the look of the place. When I left, I told my folks all about not only the movie but the theater as well. It made me wish there was an AMC in my hometown, and that wish came true several years later when the theater I grew up going to became an AMC. I was overjoyed and went on to experience some of my most recent favorite moments at the movies there. The last movie I ever saw at the movie theater of my childhood was "Birds of Prey." Not once when I was leaving did I think that would be the case, but then after the COVID-19 pandemic, the theater announced it would not reopen. Suddenly, this place where I had seen everything from "The Adventures Of Pluto Nash" to "Spider-Man: Far rom Home" was permanently gone.

With the recent release of the trailer for the film adaptation of "Dear Evan Hansen," a lot of attention has been focused on the film's star Ben Platt. Platt is reprising his Tony-winning titular role and, as such, has already begun to garner Oscar buzz for his performance. His critically-lauded stage work was arguably the most notable and talked-about performance of the 2016-17 theatrical season. Notably, if Platt were to win the Oscar, he will have achieved the rare EGOT. And, all four of his trophies would be for his work in "Dear Evan Hansenh." Suffice to say, his performance in the film has the potential to be a big deal in the world of awards. But just how common is it for Tony-winning roles to lead to Oscar success? Does history favor Platt's stage-to-screen awards path?

Making its premiere at Sundance over a year ago, "The Killing Of Two Lovers" is one of those independent discoveries that makes you excited to see what everyone involved will be doing next. That's because so many elements are well-thought-out and pronounced within the film to tell a story that feels familiar but is being presented in ways unlike we've previously seen before. Part of that is the richly layered performance from Clayne Crawford as the film's protagonist David and the unnerving sound work by Sound Re-Recording Mixer and Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen. Both of them were kind enough to take some time to tell us about their roles in the making of this excellent film which is now in theaters and on VOD. Take a listen down below. We hope you enjoy it and that you seek this one out. Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. At the 93rd Academy Awards, "Nomadland's" Chloé Zhao made history when she won the Oscar for Best Director, as only the second woman - and the first woman of color - to achieve such a feat - eleven long years after Kathryn Bigelow trounced her competitors in the category for her work on 2009's "The Hurt Locker." While Zhao's win is absolutely worth celebrating, new questions now arise; will we have to wait over a decade for another female recipient of the Best Director Oscar? Thankfully, even though this year's race is chock-full of contenders from male auteurs (Paul Thomas Anderson's "Soggy Bottom," Wes Anderson's "The French Dispatch," Guillermo Del Toro's "Nightmare Alley," Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," etc.), the ladies are ready to represent as well. Below, we outline ten female filmmakers who could follow in Chloé Zhao's footsteps this awards season to earn a Best Director nomination - and maybe even secure that statue, too.
