Cinematography is often the first thing we notice when watching a film, but the person behind the camera creating the magic often goes unrecognized except for the few seconds their name appears in the credits. A Director of Photography (DP) can carry a distinct visual style throughout their body of work, often pairing that style with a like-minded director. There are dozens of cinematographers working today that have produced some truly stunning work. This list highlights fifteen of them in no particular order and gives a brief glimpse into what they are working on next. No list can ever be perfect, and I'll be the first to say that many worthy names have been left off here. But before you get angry about an omission, you have to remember that to qualify for this list; a cinematographer must be officially attached to a film that is expected to be released by the end of 2022. So, quality names such as Rachel Morrison and Bradford Young do not appear because they don't have anything lined up at the moment.

Mike Rianda's feature-length directorial debut "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" is premiering this weekend on Netflix after having a long road to release. A six year long project, the film first started at Sony with "Spider-Man: Into The Spier-Verse's" creative team and the producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller before moving to Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving a name-change (formerly titled "Connected") and now, it's finally here for the world to see. Mike was kind enough to take a few minutes to talk with us about the film's themes, its characters, the animation process and more! Check out below and be sure to watch the film on Netflix. Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. For those who had been closely following the race, the 93rd Academy Awards had very few surprising winners, one of them was the Best Actress winner. After Renee Zellweger gave her remarks on each of the nominees' performances, she opened the envelope. She announced that the Oscar had gone to Frances McDormand from "Nomadland," who had just won the BAFTA a few days earlier. It was McDormand's second Oscar of the night after winning just a few minutes earlier for producing "Nomadland" to a Best Picture win, her third in the lead actress category, and her fourth overall Oscars, including the producing win. The exciting part was that this year's Best Actress race was in the least predictable category of the year and definitely over the last decade.

While it is tempting to compare the disaster ending of the 2020 Oscars with that of 2016, there is absolutely no comparison. The historic victory of "Moonlight" was not allowed to stand on its own thanks to "La La Land" being announced as Best Picture first, yet that was the extent of the collateral damage. In contrast, not one, two, three, four, five, or six, but seven legacies were either tarnished or given an ugly asterisk they should never have had, in one fell swoop of terrible closing decisions by the Academy.

It's that time of year, folks! Last year's Oscars have finally wrapped up, so it's time for our way-too-early predictions for next year. We're well into 2021 already, much later than we usually post these early predictions. As of now, next year's Oscars will award films released from March 1st to December 31st. Of course, it's way too early to think we have an accurate idea of what will win Best Picture. Instead, think of this as a guide to potential contenders. It's always fun to look back and see how close we are to what ended up nominated! Click below to see our early Oscar predictions for 2021.

For our second podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham & Dan Bayer. Today, we are reviewing the re-boot of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise, appropriately titled "Mortal Kombat," which is now streaming on HBO Max. The film stars an international ensemble cast that includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim & Hiroyuki Sanada, along with a ton of blood-soaked fatalities and mythological backstory to introduce us to these characters and this world. How does it all come together? What did we think? GET OVER HERE to find out! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. After the most extended Oscar season in 79 years, a new Best Picture was finally crowned as “Nomadland” took the top prize of the night. Or rather, it took the third-to-last award of the night. It was a historic evening in so many ways, good and bad, so let’s dive into the highs, lows, and records of the insane 93rd Academy Awards.

It was a rollercoaster of emotions as the 93rd Academy Awards concluded in a shocking upset for Best Actor that left a poor taste in many fans' minds after the producers decided to announce Best Actress & Best Actor after the Best Picture award (first time this had happened since the 1930s) all in hopes of a different outcome than what we received. The shock, anger, and disgust of it all could be felt from all of us here at Next Best Picture as we hopped on to discuss the show immediately following its conclusion. There's so much more to talk about, and here to join me for it all, I have Amanda Spears, Cody Dericks, Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, Daniel Howat, Ryan C. Showers & Michael Schwartz. This was originally going to be a Patreon exclusive podcast, but we decided to release it in full for all of you to listen to. Thank you all for what was undoubtedly one of the most bizarre awards seasons any of us have ever experienced. We're not going anywhere after this as there will be more to discuss in the weeks ahead but for now, enjoy our initial reactions to the 2021 Oscars. Thank you so much for listening. As Oscar night quickly approaches us after the most extended awards season ever and one of the most difficult years we've had to face, there's one question I can't help from shaking from my mind: is "Nomadland" really going to sweep the entire season without any competition? Don't get me wrong, "Nomadland" is a great movie, and it's deserving of all the awards it's received so far, but ever since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2020, "Nomadland" has remained at the top of Gold Derby's predictions list for the entire season. I remember looking at my own predictions in November, thinking I would just keep it there as a placeholder until another film started to sweep the awards conversation, similar to "The Irishman's" placement in November 2019 that was quickly swept away by the likes of "1917" and "Parasite" once the awards season actually started.

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Sara Clements, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer. This weekend, we're reviewing the newest film on Netflix, "Stowaway," directed by Joe Penna ("Arctic") and starring Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Shamier Anderson & Daniel Dae Kim. It's another survivalist space discussion but this one has a moral dilemma at its center that's worth exploring and talking about. Take a listen as we discuss the performances, the story and the spoiler filled ending. We hope you enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The 36th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards aired on April 22nd, 2021, at 10 pm EST on IFC, hosted by comedian and "Saturday Night Live" cast member Melissa Villaseñor. The Spirit Awards tend to be one of my favorite awards shows every year due to their unique group of winners and highlighting more smaller, lesser-seen films than the bigger televised awards show. It is also refreshing to see films and performances that have received many nominations throughout the season finally get a win and chance in the spotlight. This year, they also featured categories highlighting the best of the year in independent television, specifically new series. Some consider the Spirit Awards to be the "Film Twitter awards" as of late due to Film Independent's reasonably easy process of anyone becoming a member and voting. Still, I was incredibly excited for this year's ceremony, and the eventual crop of winners was a breath of fresh air in this elongated season.

In the final days of this year's Oscar race, one of the most heated categories is easily the one for Best Adapted Screenplay, with most awards prognosticators seeing this as a two-script race between Christopher Hampton & Florian Zeller's adaptation of Zeller's play "The Father" and Chloé Zhao's adaptation of Jessica Bruder's non-fiction best-seller "Nomadland." While plays are a familiar source of adapted screenplays, bringing non-fiction books to the screen is less common, making Zhao's nomination all the more notable.

Yesterday, I revealed my predictions in the below-the-line Oscar categories. Now, I am revealing my predictions for the top eight prizes. After the Critics, Golden Globes, SAG, BAFTA and Industry Awards all chimed in on the race; most categories seem less murky. But in others, the tea leaves still haven't formed a clear picture for what is going to happen this Sunday. Again, I'll be using the above races to formulate my predictions. I will also once again be looking at how Best Picture nominees since the category expanded in 2009 have performed in each category.

You have seen my previous two articles discussing the crafts and half of the above-the-line categories. Last night, the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held last night representing the best in independent film for 2020. After the show, I decided to do something I've never done before, which was to hop on a Zoom call with the NBP Film Community right after the show to talk about the winners and what our thoughts are heading into the Oscars this Sunday. Since Film Independent is an organization that anyone can join, it only felt right to celebrate this evening with the community, some of whom are voters themselves. Tune in below to listen and enjoy! By Dan Bayer
"Together Together" premiered earlier this year at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it garnered strong reviews for its screenplay, performances from Ed Helms, Patti Harrison and sensitive direction from Nikole Beckwith. Nikole was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the genesis of the project, working with the actors, what the story means to her and more. The film releases tomorrow from Bleecker Street and we highly urge you to check it out if and when you can. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. If you've been following my series of Prediction Articles for Golden Globes & SAG, you've probably noticed that I try (my best) to take emotion out of my predictions and focus on data and stats. Next up are the nine craft races that can make or break a film's chances of winning Best Picture. The races we'll be looking at are Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Score, Song, Sound, and Visual Effects. After, we'll take a look at the shorts and Animated, Documentary & International Feature Film. Tomorrow, I will be back with my predictions in the above-the-line categories. Primarily I will be basing these predictions on Guild, Critic, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA performance. I will also be considering that since the number of Best Picture nominees expanded in 2009 how those films have performed in each category.

On April 15th (the same day as Oscar voting for the winners began), I asked the NBP Film Community to pretend they were Academy voters and choose the winners of the 93rd Academy Awards. Voting ended the same day as actual Oscar voting ended, which was on April 20th. Best Picture was voted on through the preferential balloting system, while every other category was chosen on a plurality vote. We had 1590 submissions, making this one of our most successful sample sizes yet, so we really appreciate all of you coming in at roughly 18% of the Academy's voting body. You can check out the NBP Team's winners, which were announced a few days ago, here. Click below to see what winners you would've chosen for this year's Oscars if you were Academy members.

We have reached the moment of truth. The 2020-2021 film awards season has been the most prolonged awards season that many of us have experienced. Most are ready to move on to a new year and new films, but even though this has been a prolonged process, I feel as though most of us are declaring our final predictions and leaving behind this season with warm regards. |
