Everybody who follows awards season wants to be an Oscar voter. The influence, the taste-making, the importance, who wouldn’t want to be able to cast a ballot? So here at Next Best Picture, I ran a survey to see what would happen if the Oscars were decided by both #FilmTwitter and the Next Best Picture staff. I calculated the winners just like the Academy does, including using a preferential system to decide Best Picture. First up, let’s see what #FilmTwitter chose. We received hundreds of responses from all over the world and every single nominee got at least one vote in every category. You can check out those winners here. Now let’s take a look at the Next Best Picture team's Oscar choices...

Yet another awards season is in the books. The Oscars may have just crowned a new winner, but it’s never too early to start predicting our next Best Picture. Each year we take a way-too-early look at next season’s contenders (take a look at how we did last year). We’ve got plenty of legends, overdue contenders, and potential first-timers. Let’s break down some of the films, and I’ll make my first predictions in the top six categories.

A few weeks ago, I asked everyone to consider "If I were an Oscar voter, what would I vote for this year?" We gathered over 650 responses from all of you and have the results. While this is by no means an accurate reflection of the entire internet or surely the Academy itself, this is still an interesting snapshot of what many of you are hoping to happen tonight at the Oscars. Take a look below at what you chose for the 92nd Academy Award winners.

In 2010, Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director for her film “The Hurt Locker.” Nearly ten years later, Bigelow is still the only woman to hold this award. Including her, there have only been five women total to have ever been nominated: Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”), Jane Campion (“The Piano”), Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”), and Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”).

The industry has now had their opportunity to chime in on this year’s Oscar race and it comes down to two films: “1917” and “Parasite.” The former is a World War One drama that’s a technical masterpiece appearing to be one continuous shot, and the latter from South Korea is the tale of the class division of two families. “Parasite” has been a contender since the Cannes Film Festival, and while it would appear that “1917” has the edge, we might want to look back at the 1998 Oscar race for clarity.

I love stats. I love the precursors. I love what they can and sometimes can't tell you about the Oscar race. For the purposes of this final Oscar predictions article, I'm going to use stats to make predictions for the 92nd Academy Awards. Some of these will be easier than others. And for some, we'll have to throw away the stats all together and rely on our gut instinct to help us figure out what's going to win an Oscar this Sunday. I have put together charts for each category (even if the category is locked) which I hope to keep referencing for years to come. You can also listen to my final Oscar Predictions on this week's latest edition of the podcast here. So get ready. Here are my in-depth predictions for the 92nd Academy Awards.

You've seen lists from Matt Neglia, Daniel Howat, Josh Parham, Ryan C. Showers, Cody Dericks and now it is my turn. As we get ready for this Sunday's Oscar ceremony, it's time for me to reveal my Top 10 favorite films of 2019. Some of my favorite films are nominated for Oscars while others are not but that doesn't make them any less important to me. Click below to see my top 10 favorite films of 2019.

At the 1st Academy Awards in 1929, Best Picture was awarded to “Wings,” an American silent film set during the First World War. War movies have always been popular at the Academy Awards; and yet, despite their popularity in earlier years, films about World War I have seen little Oscar success in the 21st century. This is partially because there are simply fewer films made about the First World War than other wars (particularly the Second World War), especially within the United States.

The 2019 NBP Film Community Award Winners have been revealed. The best of the 2010s nominations are being currently calculated. And now, after weeks of Top 10 lists, the 20 members of Next Best Picture have announced their own award winners for 2019. Last year really rounded out the decade with a bang, delivering a bumper crop of great films. I’m usually a fairly stingy grader of films, but I gave 20 films a grade of eight out of ten, 11 films nine out of ten, and three films ten out of ten, which is quite a lot for me. I had no hesitation being generous with my ratings because it’s a testament to the quality of movies in 2019. Let’s take a look at the absolute peak examples of what was truly a great year in film.

Oscar voting is officially over for the 92nd Academy Awards. I spoke to a number of Academy voters about what they are voting for and why. Here is what five of them have to say. As you read these, just remember, these are just a handful of ballots out of the 9,000+ people who vote. While these may give some insight into voters’ minds, they are far from the be all end all. Together, we debate, we question, we argue, we yell, we lay it all on the line because in the end, this is what we love to do. Also, as an added bonus, we reveal the winners of the 2019 NBP Film Awards at the end of the podcast! Kick back, relax and listen to us struggle to predict the 2020 Oscar winners. "Joker" leads this year's Academy Awards with 11 nominations. Two of those nominations are for its Costume Design by Mark Bridges ("The Artist" & "Phantom Thread") and its Makeup & Hairstyling by Nicki Ledermann & Kay Georgiou ("The Irishman" & "Lincoln" respectively). All three of them were kind enough to talk about their work on the film, being nominated for an Oscar, working with an actor like Joaquin Phoenix, delivering a new spin on an already iconic character and more! Take a listen down below. Thank you so much for listening. Renée Zellweger is on her way to winning her second Academy Award. Her portrayal of Judy Garland in “Judy” betrayed the odds in a post-Glenn Close Oscar world of awards predicting. Zellweger has won at the National Board of Review, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild, and now the BAFTA awards. In addition to Best Actress, “Judy” has been nominated for Best Makeup/Hairstyling at the Oscars. Zellweger and “Judy” have over-performed, surprising the skeptics who were uninspired by her central performance and who were explicitly put-off by the film itself.

As the Academy prepares to honor the best in film from the past year, I would like to speak about some of my favorite performances. All four of my choices are nominated, and that speaks to just how good the performances were in 2019 across various films and genres. While only one seems clearly set on a path to victory, all four will stay with me as I reminisce about this terrific cinematic year. With Academy voting still going on, I thought now would be a good time to highlight these four performances.

The Sundance Film Festival is the unofficial start of any new film year. It's not just a celebration of independent films but it can also serve as a launching pad for new filmmakers and voices within the cinematic landscape. Sometimes, a film emerges that leaves such a lasting impression that it is able to withstand the rest of the year and make it all the way to awards season. We've seen "Manchester By The Sea," "Boyhood," "Whiplash," and "Precious" all go on to receive Best Picture nominations in the last few years. With the Academy's taste expanding and the profile for Sundance rising, the potential for Oscar contenders to emerge from the film festival has become greater over the last decade. What are the contenders this year? Click below to find out.

After working with shorts for a few years, director Jérémy Clapin made his feature filmmaking debut this year with the Netflix animated film "I Lost My Body." The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier let year where it became the first animated film to win the Nespresso Grand Prize. It has since gone on to win various critics awards and receive a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards. Jérémy was kind enough to chat with Next Best Picture about the making of "I Lost My Body." Take a listen below. Thank you so much for listening.
