For our main review this weekend, I am joined by Daniel Howat & Tom O'Brien. This week, we are reviewing the latest film on HBO Max titled "The Little Things." Directed by John Lee Hancock and written by him in 1993, this psychological police/serial killer thriller has been sitting on the shelf for a long time. Now that it has attracted the talent that it has and is now streaming on Warner Bros. premiere service, how does it hold up to today's standards? What did we think of the film's mystery, atmosphere, characters and more? Tune in below to find out and remember, "always enjoy the little things." Thank you so much for listening. As we transition from critics' association nominations and winners to the televised and industry award shows, there is a key piece of predicting acting nominations we must consider: A trend we have seen from the Academy in the acting categories this past decade is a pattern to reward many actors from a single film. It has been very common for the past ten years to see two, three, and even sometimes four actors from the same film nominated together. Suppose an actor is actively competitive in the televised precursors – Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA – but not securely fastened in for the final nomination at the Oscars. In that case, they will most likely come along for the ride if they have co-stars who are surefire locks.

One of the last films of this awards year, "Malcolm & Marie," is soon to be released on Netflix but has been screening to critics and voting members, gaining a positive-to-mixed reaction between this crowd. As of right now, "Malcolm & Marie" is my favorite film of this awards year, and I do not see any other film topping it this late into the season. While critics may be mixed on the film, this is one that many members of the Academy will support and love. There should be a strong campaign made for this film to do well during this awards season, and there are reasons why Hollywood will want to reward this film in this particular year.

In a press release by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the feature films eligible for consideration in the Best Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film categories for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced. The shortlist for Documentary and International Feature Film will be announced on February 9th. The complete list can be found below.

As we begin a new year, there may not be any sign of an actual date for the Tony Awards or a timeframe for the return of live theater, but with a new administration and the continued rollout of the vaccine, it feels like a new world anyway. With that in mind, the Next Best Theater team decided to take a look at the under-utilized form of musical storytelling, the song cycle, in the form of Jason Robert Brown's "Songs For A New World." Join Nicole Ackman, Casey Lee Clark, Cody Dericks, and myself as we journey through the sixteen "moments" of the first produced work of one of the great contemporary musical theater composer-lyricists. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. While receiving a Golden Globe or Critics Choice nomination is nice, a Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination is critical if you're going to receive an Oscar nomination or eventually win. The acting branch is the largest branch of the Academy and only "Braveheart" (1995) was completely overlooked by SAG and still able to win the Oscar Best Picture, up until the back to back years of "The Shape Of Water" in 2017 and "Green Book" in 2018. Last year's Best Film Ensemble winner "Parasite" went on to win Best Picture and all four individual acting winners followed up their SAG victories with an Oscar win. So where does that leave us for this year? Click below to see my predictions for this year's SAG Award Nominations.
By Lauren LaMagna
As we slowly but surely get deeper into awards season, it is common for predictors to create their list of five to ten films that they believe will get nominated for the Oscars. General reviews, past performances, and critics groups are usually good indicators of who will get nominated and who will not. Usually, at this point in awards season, most predictors are, for the most part, on the same page as to what films will get nominated but are unsure as to who will take home the gold. This causes interesting debates that usually feature two different sides: Favor the film that is backed by an Academy favorite or favor the new movie that everyone seems to love.

"Promising Young Woman" has only just become easier to talk about, now that those with Video On Demand are in on the film's twists, turns and controversies. However, there is one sequence that critics and new fans can and have raved about without having to tip-toe around spoilers, namely the impromptu "Stars Are Blind" musical sequence/montage in a pharmacy.

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival officially kicks off tomorrow evening. One of the year's biggest festivals, it has been the un-official start of the movie year as many films make their premieres at the festival which will then get released throughout the next 12 months (and sometimes even into the following year). A celebration of independent film and new voices, you never know what you're going to get at the festival when you sit down to watch something and this year, despite not being up in the mountains of Utah due to the pandemic, is no different. Cody Dericks and I will be covering the festival this year for Next Best Picture and we have listed below in alphabetical order, the ten films we are most looking forward to at this year's festival. The National Board Of Review have announced their winners representing the best in cinema for 2020. The New York based group is over 100 years old consisting of unknown voting members who are filmmakers, professionals and academics. The winners for their Best Picture prize from the last four years were "Manchester By The Sea," "The Post," "Green Book" & "The Irishman," with only one of those going on to win Best Picture, the first time since 2008's winner, "Slumdog Millionaire." So, this group doesn't have the best track-record when it comes to predicting the Best Picture winner but they're still an unpredictable group in many ways, producing fun winners to mull over and a top 10 list which is used by many to compare with the AFI Top 10 list which was released yesterday. Click below to see which films they rewarded.

Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002. Until that point, 74 award ceremonies came and went without the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selecting a Black woman as the Best Actress performance of the year. As we enter this awards season, Berry remains the only Black woman to ever win the title of Best Actress. There have only been 12 nominations in the Best Actress category in which Black actresses have had a seat at the table. This indescribable injustice exemplifies the lack of acknowledgment and the lack of opportunities women of color have had within the film industry since its inception. To quote Viola Davis, who was perhaps one of the closest women in history to follow Berry in winning Best Actress for "The Help" in 2011, after winning at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015, "You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."

"Mank" is one of 2020's most technically dazzling films. David Fincher's perfectionism transported us back to the Golden Age of Hollywood to tell us the story of Academy Award winning screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman) and the film has been hailed as one of the year's best, most recently being rewarded as one of the Top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI). Many members from the film's production were kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the film including Academy Award-nominated sound designer Ren Klyce, Costume Designer Trish Summerville & Co-Producer/VFX Producer, Peter Mavromates. Take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network. In a year that was rocked by a deadly pandemic, horrifying moments of racial injustice, and political turmoil that seemed to rot the brains of those around us, 2020 had enough real-life horror that it might've seemed to eliminate the need for fictional scares. But 2020 was not lacking for good horror releases. While it may have been an unusual year for film releases, it's still a year worthy of examination when it comes to the horror genre

The American Film Institute (AFI) has officially announced their list of the Top 10 best films of 2020. Historically, their picks tend to line up with the nominees for Best Picture with somewhere in the 6-8 range. In 2017, they went 7/10. In 2018, they went lower than average with 5/10. Last year, they went 7/10 (with a special award given to "Parasite"). What films did they choose this year and which ones will go on to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture?
