The trend of rewarding popular names and widely seen, profitable films this award season continued at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night. The 25th annual ceremony leaned into conventional wisdom yet brought a few surprises to keep the race mostly interesting in a few major categories. So often, SAG is regarded as the paramount predictive pillar during award season, because it has crossover with the largest branch in the Academy, the actors. Back in the old days, if one did not receive a SAG nomination, their chances at winning the Oscar were over. Conversely, too, if an actor wins at SAG, they became exponentially more likely to win the Oscar. SAG is supposed to clue us in on what’s really going on with voters.

We’re 91 years into the Academy Awards. With such a long history and more than a hundred nominations each year, there are plenty of fascinating bits of trivia, stats, and other oddities to sift through. “Roma” alone led to plenty of firsts at the Oscars this year, while “Black Panther” broke new ground. To that end, I present to you our comprehensive list of trivia for the 91st Academy Awards.

Phase one of the awards season is finally over. The dust has settled and we finally know the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards. Kumail Nanjiani & Tracee Ellis Ross announced the nominations live and early in the morning for all of us who were waiting with great anticipation. To the surprise of no one, the Academy had delightful inclusions and shocking exclusions. Because of scheduling conflicts with the Sundance Film Festival starting tomorrow, we decided to hop on our laptops early and bring you Episode 127 a few days early to discuss our reactions to the 2019 Oscar Nominations. For this episode, I am joined by Michael Schwartz, Josh Parham, Celia Schelekewey, Liam Heffernan & Tom O'Brien. We will be back with Episode 128 on February 3rd to discuss the fallout from the SAG Awards, our reactions to the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and more! See you then! Thank you so much for listening. The morning is finally here! After months and months of deliberation, campaigning, and plenty of arguing, the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards are here. As per usual, they came with plenty of surprises, more than a few snubs, and plenty to talk about. Let’s dive into our initial reactions to the nominations!

After what has been one of the most brutal pre-nomination phases of the Oscars I can remember in quite some time, the day has finally come. The Academy has announced their nominations for the 91st Academy Awards to be held on February 24th 2019 (my birthday, of all days). Surprises, shocks and snubs were of course present as always. Jacey Aldredge, Josh Parham and I are back with a new season of television to talk about with all of you on the Next Best Series Podcast starring Oscar winner (and soon to be nominee once again) Mahershala Ali in HBO's "True Detective." After the misfire that was "True Detective" Season 2 a few years ago, has writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto learned his lesson and brought us something that harkens back to the greatness of Season 1? We discuss this and more in our first of 3 recaps of HBO's hit series. This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. For the small price of $1 a month, you can receive this review along with other exclusive podcast content, so be sure to subscribe here. Thank you so much for listening. “Black Panther” was the highest grossing film in America in 2018, and received overwhelming critical acclaim. Culturally, the film made a huge, lasting impact for representation on screen. Because of all of these elements, “Black Panther” has received a legendary awards push from Disney and Marvel. That push has poised “Black Panther” to break new ground not only for Marvel but superhero films as a whole. Let’s look back at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history at the Academy Awards, category-by-category.

Two fascinating categories (and two that also sadly have a shot at being left off of the live ceremony this year due to the Academy's stubborn move to keep the Oscar ceremony to under three hours long) are Best Costume Design and Production Design. With Oscar nominations a day away, I wanted to take one final look at both categories and highlight some hopefuls and some favorites to give these proper artists and films their due.

Tomorrow is the big day. Everything we've talked about for the past 10 months culminates tomorrow. Starting at 8:20am EST, the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced. We have discussed on Episode 126 at great length, the reasoning behind our predictions, and now we have them all listed below for you to see. A reminder though, that for as many happy moments which will occur tomorrow for your favorite films or performances, there will be just as many snubs as well. Hearts WILL be broken. I guarantee you that. I think with the way this season has gone so far, it's important to remember to be respectful to each other. This season has gotten ugly on more than a few occssions and if someone likes a partciular film or performance you don't and they're happy that it got nominated, I ask that you don't take their happiness away from them. With that said, let's all take a deep breath, dive right in and hope that we can come up from the bottom for air on the other side.

M. Night Shyamalan is back on the big screen with the culmination of his nearly 20 year story of "Unbreakable" & "Split," titled "Glass." James McAvoy, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson all return to play their characters from M. Night Shyamalan's previous films. What are the results? What did Josh Parham, Cody Dericks, Danilo Castro and myself think of this much anticipated film? Listen below to find out. Thank you so much for listening. Here at Next Best Picture, we also cover Theatre from time to time on the Next Best Theatre Podcast. With this post, I want to merge both film and theatre into one and give those who love both something exciting to read. There’s something very special about being able to see a film or television actor that you admire give a great performance live on stage in front of you. Of course, there are many talented theatre actors but there are some actors who have made a great career of performing both onscreen and onstage. We have rounded up a list of where you can see your favorite film and television actors on stage in New York City from now through the spring.

On Monday, the 30th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival came to a close after offering screenings of 226 films from 78 countries in 12 days. Attendance figures from this year's festival have yet to be released, but last year the Palm Springs fest drew over 135,000 attendees, making it the third most-attended film festival in North America. Positioned as it is after the first of the year, Palm Springs doesn't have the same influence on the major Oscar categories as, let's say, the Telluride, Toronto and New York festivals, which annually premiere many of the films that go on to contend for the marquee Oscar categories. As unfriendly as the calendar might be to Palm Springs in uncovering potential Best Picture winners, it does afford this event two opportunities that no other festival can provide.

When used effectively, a film setting has the potential to feel like a character of its own. Think about the use of New York in films such as "When Harry Met Sally" and "Can You Ever Forgive Me?," to the role Los Angeles plays in "Chinatown" and "La La Land." A great city can play a big role in how we respond to particular movies. However, sometimes we tend to respond more when our own home is prominently featured. As a proud native and current resident of suburban Philadelphia, I am always thrilled to see my community on the big screen. Not just because I know the sights on display, but I believe that the best films that are set in Philadelphia truly highlight the warmth and community on display.

The ballots are in, and all we can do is wait. Wait and see what movies get nominated for this year’s Oscars. There’s something that has been bugging me ever since the season started, though. Will "Black Panther" get a Best Picture nomination? It’s seemed like a long shot ever since it was released way back on February 16, 2018, for a few reasons, most notably that a superhero/comic book movie has never broken into the Best Picture category before. The film rode the wave of stellar reviews and word-of-mouth to become the type of critical and popular hit that seems too big to ignore, and sure enough, it’s gotten nominated at nearly every guild it could have been. But even still, the question has been bugging me...Will AMPAS really vote for a movie that opened so early in the year? So I did some digging.
By Cody Dericks
With Oscar nominations fast approaching, everybody is working and stressing to solidify their predictions. But this year is a weird one. So many races are still up in the air, least of all the performance categories. The general consensus for these races is that all of the categories have a solid four nominees that are seemingly a sure thing, with the fifth slot (in other words, your predicted nominee that stands the smallest chance of actually getting nominated) less easy to pin down. Let’s go through all four of these categories and try to determine the fifth slots using both cold hard statistics and general awards trajectory.

After last week's Patreon podcast review of "The Sixth Sense," we now bring you our review of M. Night Shyamalan's 2000 film (And the start of his Eastrail 177 Trilogy) "Unbreakable" starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson & Robin Wright Penn. For this review, I am joined by Jacey Aldredge, Ed Douglas & guest Trent Ostrom. Together, we take a look at the film in a post Marvel era and how well does the film still hold up today? How are the performances from its actors? How has M. Night Shyamalan grown (or reduced) as a filmmaker? Tune in as we discuss all of this and more!
