For our next review, I am joined by Josh Parham & Ryan C. Showers. This week, we are reviewing the latest collaboration between Tom Hanks & director Paul Greengrass titled "News Of The World." How does this western compare to their last Best Picture nominated collaboration, "Captain Phillips?" What did we think of the crafts on display? How about the chemistry between Hanks and newcomer Helena Zengel? We discuss all of this and more in our review which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. I've made it abundantly clear that my no. 1 favorite film of the year is Emerald Fennell's directorial debut "Promising Young Woman." Having seen the film a year ago at Sundance, it stayed at my no. 1 slot all year long and now, it even finds itself in the Oscar conversation. Receiving a chance to talk to the film's leading star Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell was such a thrill for me as I got many questions answered and behind-the-scenes insight into one of the best films of the year, what it means to the both of them and more! The movie is currently available to rent and purchase on digital through Focus Features and I hope you all get a chance to see it. Please take a listen down below to my conversation with Emerald and Carey. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. South by Southwest (SXSW) has announced several new titles that will be screening at the 2021 festival. These titles range from the psychological drama series "Confronting a Serial Killer," to the YouTube Originals series "Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil," which chronicles the life of the pop star in the wake of her nearly fatal overdose. SXSW will be held online in 2021, which gives increased access to online exhibitions, special events, music showcases, and more. The festival platform will launch on February 15th, and the festival itself runs from March 16–20th at sxsw.com. Read on below for a rundown of the titles that have been confirmed thus far.

Unlike the race for Best International Film, where many of the leading contenders are difficult to locate and screen, the nomination contest for Best Documentary Feature offers films that can easily be found since most of the major streaming services have one serious documentary in the hunt. Still, in a category where the leading contenders include an exposé of voter suppression, a profile of truffle-hunting dogs, and even a fanciful look at death, the apples-and-oranges nature of the competition makes it very challenging to predict which 15 films will make the documentary feature shortlist, much less the final five nominees. But, as always, let's try. Here are ten very different documentary features that I suspect will be given serious consideration by Oscar voters and stand the best shot of being included in the shortlisted 15.

We are back to doing Patreon Throwback Podcast reviews here at Next Best Picture! For our second of 2021, to help us get ready for the release of "One Night In Miami," we are taking one of that film's key central figures and looking back on his own biopic film from director Spike Lee, "Malcolm X." We discuss the film's epic scope, Denzel Washington's monumental performance, how much the film still means to all of us today and its shameful snubbing at the 1992 Academy Awards. For this review, I am being joined by Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Danilo Castro, guest Sharronda Williams from PayOrWait.com and Patreon guest Giovanni Lago. Please take a listen down below and enjoy! This is a preview of the podcast, the full version of which is only available to those who subscribe to us on Patreon. "Promising Young Woman" is a film that goes against its "revenge movie" advertising and formula, well before the soon to be famous or infamous finale. By then, the viewer has plenty of time to decide whether this is the kind of "revenge movie" they are willing to get behind and whether they mind by then that it isn't what the trailer, or the revenge genre in general, promised them they were in for.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has had a huge rise within the film industry over the past few years. After starring in "The Greatest Showman," "Aquaman," "Us" and then winning an Emmy earlier this year for his work on "Watchmen," he now finds himself in the crucial role of Bobby Seale in Aaron Sorkin's Oscar contender, "The Trial Of The Chicago 7." Yahya was kind enough to take some time to talk to us about the importance of the role to him, the preparation he did in playing such an iconic historical figure, his experience in making the film and more! By combining two things he's known for, politics and courtroom drama, Aaron Sorkin delivers "The Trial of the Chicago 7." With a predominantly male cast, they've strategically all decided to campaign for Best Supporting Actor. Should three actors for "The Trial of the Chicago 7" receive a nomination, it would only be the sixth time in Oscar history that this has ever happened.

"Herself" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim for Clare Dunn's lead performance and her screenplay. However, there have been other notable elements which have flown under the radar since its premiere, including the direction by Phyllida Lloyd and the performances from the rest of the ensemble. One of those actors is Tony and Emmy nominated Harriet Walter. The British actress was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about her experience making the film, what she feels it means for survivors of domestic violence and more. "Herself" is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Enjoy! Thank you so much for listening. The Next Best Picture Podcast is proud to be a part of the Evergreen Podcasts Network.
